I'll soon be traveling to Ukraine (July 24) and thought I would bring my "iPod touch" to have internet communication. Trouble is I must have a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect to the internet. Does any one know if they even have Wi-Fi hotspots in Ukraine? Also, are there any "American" cell phones that work in Ukraine? Blackberries?
In Odessa there are three cafes that I know of with wi-fi.
The Irish Pub, the cafe in front of the hotel next to the Irish Pub, and a cafe on Ekaterinskaya one block down from Deribasovskaya.
I'm sure there are more, but I happened to be looking for wi-fi spots the other day and noticed these.
My Blackberry--which is on Cingular--works too. Because it is quad-band GSM, it picks up the local service. Emails and sms come through, although text messages are $.50 to send and receive. Phone calls are possible but cost almost $4/minute.
For local calls and keeping in touch with ladies, you will want to have a Ukranian SIM card.
Yes if you are adept at texting it is priced reasonable from Ukraine. My friend and I text usually once or twice a day. She is on Kyivstar and I am on Alltel. Once in a while a message fails to go through or arrives 10 hours after it is sent but usually it is reliable. With alltel it is the same price for international sms as it is for domestic to both send and receive. My plan includes 1000 texts. It costs .66 hrevna (13 cents)to send with Kyivstar and is free to receive. If you use other carriers you should check their rates if cost is important to you.
Their prepaid cards can be recharged on the Internet but only with credit cards issued within their country the last time I checked. (my visa issued in the US will not work)
It appears that kyivstar will accept visa and mastercard now. I use a debit card and they require a verification process (they freeze a small amount of money and you have to tell them how much they froze in a preauthorization). The problem is that I view this in dollars and it has to be verified in Hrevnas. I requested a conversion rate from them to know what sum to enter. But if this problem is resolved it will allow minutes to be added to a friends account from the Internet.
i bought a cheap phone when i got here and a "JEANS" sim card, as it's the same as olya's. also bought a "life :)" sim card for a 2nd phone as it seems the cheapest for calling back to the UK.
i pretty much just pay for everything with cash here in kiev. hardly anywhere takes plastic.
