Thinking about hiring a car next I go to see "angel". Will probably tour around southern UK/crimea for a few days. Anyone any tips ?, in lieu of actually knowledge the usual ignorant speculation will do :-).
Crazy drivers is an understatement!! I've been living here for four years, and bought a car last October.
I'll skip the jokes about them driving on the wrong side of the road (I'm Aussie) because they don't ALL drive on the wrong side of the road. If the road is congested, the other side is fine for some.
While you are supposed to have an International Driver's Licence, the one I had was ignored by the police. They looked at my Australian D/L and were satisfied. On another occasion I showed them my Pilot Licence instead. That was good enough. Tongue in cheek, once I showed them a Safety Induction card from a former employer. Once again, a laminated card (no pic, just two signatures) was ok.
The IMPORTANT document is the car registration. You MUST have that with you at all times while driving. If you aren't the owner of the car, you must also produce a Dverinost (Power of Attorney) issued by a Ukrainian notariu. Without these two documents (or just the registration if you're the owner and it's registered in your name) you are in trouble.
As for the driving: Just drive VERY defensively. They don't obey speed limits (40kph in towns and villages and 80kph on the open road). The police are not supposed to stop you unless you are more than 10kph over the limit, but they often just stop a vehicle randomly to collect the bribe.
There are few speed signs, and most of them are related to roadworks. (Yellow signs) When you see the sign naming the village, that is the start of the 40kph zone. At the other end of the village, there is another sign with three or four thin diagonal red lines through the name of the village. That's the end of the 40kph zone.
