HI to you all I have just found this forum and havent really posted before. You all seem an experinced bunch at this Rusian girl thing, so I am looking for advice.
Recently contacted by a girl calling herself Elena from Kazan, has 2 e-mail addresses one with g-mail and another throogh rmbler.ru( not sure if this makes any difference).
Anyway in the first couple of e-mails, she told me her age, job, height weight etc; always sends a photo with her e-mails( yes it is her in each one)
After e-mails on tells me an ex-boyfriend used to be involved with gangsters , now in jail; i thought, hell she is being honest.
After that the e-mails were just long but full of love, and poems etc etc,not a lot of detail. I asked for a phone number an address, company she works for. nothing forth coming in any e-mails.
Now she says she would like to come and see me in the UK and wants to know what my nearest airport is, so she can work out the costs., she says she needs to meet with me or she will need to re-think the realtioship( what there is of it) and might not continue to e-mail becasue it would hurt her emotionally to much.
I know it sounds as though there is a scam going to happen, trouble is she is really beautiful. not supermodel looks; but a petite blonde with great figure and looks. I promised myself at the outset not to get attached, guess what I did.
Up to now no requests for money or anything
Anyway guys you advice, do you think there is going to be a scam on here.
It is a common scam. I would say 99.9 percent chance she will ask for money. First she will ask for visa and air fare, then She has set the stage for the police to take her money in connection with her x being in trouble and will need you to send money. She will probably get sick and need more money. And that sad part is the photos are probably borrowed and she is really not a she at all. But on the bright side 0.1 per cent she could be legitimate. And if not your money will be used to help promote organized crime. Copy a sentence out of her letter and paste it into google you will probably find a match on some scam site.
For an average professional person in UA the costs of flight and visa would amount to 3 or 4 months salary or several years worth of disposable income. Bear that in mind. Its very likely a scam.
Doesn't answer your questions, that's because the letters are pre-written, stored on a PC, and transmitted to umpteen guys, oh about my work, the weather is nice, some talk about her city and 'I love you'.
Guys I thank you all for your time and imput, you basically have confirmed what I was thinking.
Danny 3777, your right I probably should get a"bloody life"; however as I mentioned this is my first foray into this arena and I was looking for expertise to help me out.So I am sorry if I came across naive and desperate, that wasnt the case; it's sometimes you want to see the good in a person.
Would I send money! no, and you guys are right the e-mail has arrived telling me the cost of the airfare and the visa; although no request for money yet.Am Iright in assuming the currency amounts would be dollar.
Not that it maters as I would send the money.
Land of Oz and eveybody thanks for your help and I hope to converse with you on other topices.
Templar: One good source of information for a starter that everyone seems to forget, although it is not always direct information, is various country's embassy websites in the given country you may be interested. For FSU countries, most foreign embassies are in Moscow (not all but most) and this is indicative of the older, but still very much relevant economic centrality of Moscow. In Soviet times, there was Moscow and there was everywhere else. It has changed, but not as much as many imagine. Kiev for example has flexed it's economic and political muscle but it is more the exception than the rule. Read around your country's and other western country's Moscow embassy websites and you will find basically advice about visas, but in among that you will find a number of advices/warnings regarding scams, travel and so forth. IMO these sites are a trustworthy measuring stick for other sources of information.
You feel naive? I have been in and out of Russia and a number of other eastern bloc countries now for years and I can assure you I am a babe in the woods there. Your action to search information before getting very involved places you way ahead of the pack who consider travelling to Russia or other FSU country. You’ll do ok if you continue to spend the time on the R&D before launching your project proper.
Templar,
The normal (scam) scenario is that they claim to have visited a travel agency who can organise everything for X amount, it might be in US dollars but the greedy ones quote in euros.
And then once the guy has sent money he might never hear from 'her' again' or 'she' might come back asking for more and more, the prices of the tickets has gone up, she needs to get to the airport, she needs a hotel, she got robbed, her grandmother has fallen ill and then the classic one is that, when she is supposedly at the airport but she is really at home, they won't let her on the aeroplane unless she has $500 in cash to show she can support herself.
But the bottom line is that no agency can organise a UK visa, she has to do that for herself and attend an interview at her nearest UK consulate. If she applies for a tourist visa then she will need confirmed hotel reservations in a recognised tourist area such as the centre of London and if she applies for a tourist visa and the consulate get even a sniff that she is going to visit a guy well her application will be 100% refused, the chances are that it will be refused anyway simply because young ladies should not be going on holiday, to a land of 'milk & noney', by themselves.
Other than that the guy needs to sponsor her visa application, the only difference there being that at least the two of you are being honest about it, she won't need the cash to show she can support herself but unless the two of you can prove, by photographic evidence, that you have met previously then the chances of her visa being approved are close to nil.
So ..... any lady that you haven't met, should never declare her strong emotions towards you and, should (does) know darn well that she will never get a visa.
Your advice is really appreciated, my instincts were correct in that this a scam, however is always good to get a second opinion, and all you guys have been helpful. The extra information on visa's and how they are obtained and what is need had been of great use.so again much appreciated.
It is a sad fact that a pretty face can turn normal well adjusted guys into bloody fools.
I mean I am an avergae 40 year old, not too bad in the looks stakes; havent been hit by the ugly stick, then you get what is your ideal women , 10 years younger saying you are wonderful. Reality tells you it's a lot of cobblers; but oh no you have to think that mayb its true.
Totaly agree with you Dunromin, sometimes your prick leads you insted of your brain.
Just as an update your guys were spot on, first came the e-mail with how much the ticket and the visa would cost, then came the e-mail saying it was too much money, she had asked her friend and boss but they couldnt help, could I help with the ticket. Then came the e-mail asking for my name address work details, and asking me to send an invitation letter.
All the tiome I asked for a telphone number or address; never answered. then came the finally e-mail saying it was to hard to continue because of the distance, since then no e-mails. You got got it spot on.
So if anybody see's an Elena ( e-mail elenasnow08@rambler.ru) she is a scammer. I would post a picture but not sure if this is allowed.
Poetic like letters with verses ( no real person talks in poems ) and "I like your structure"
( shit it sounds like it is describing a building ) and "I like and eat fruit salad" and "I like to do active rest and go to gym" is big signs of a scammer manufactured letter..I have ignored so many of them..canned letters emailed on mass using the bat e-mail software, popular among FSU scammers ( the Bat is a good e-mail program easy to configure for bulk e-mailing letters to bulk e-mail addresses and a favorite for scammers also used by business because of its multifunctionality and built in intelligent software ), I have found most of the funny obvious scammer letters have been sent with "the bat" in the e-mail header.
aussie..can I make a couple points...you don't understand very well words used by these girls. They sound strange to me but for them are normal words. Such words as 'many spheres', 'like your structure', 'active rest', 'strong family'...these are not words used by scammers, just regular words for them.
I agree scammers do use general non-specific wording like poems to send in bulk.
I knew an Australian that would make up poems and tell them to the girls in a voice chat room. They seemed to like it. But then he started talking normal mostly about sex and they forgot anything nice he said and treated him like he had the plague.
Aussieman, I see understanding the Russian language isn't one of your strong points. Literal translations of sentences are difficult at best with some phrases. My wife used active rest and odd translations in communications with me. It depends on the skill of the interpreter on how well the message is conveyed. Bat email isn't anymore a scammer tool than any other mass email delivery device.
