I'm toying with the idea of helping (both practically and economically) my lady to buy a reasonably priced car, but it seems like this is much less straight forward in ukraine.
Now in the UK I know I could by a 7-8 year old car in reasonable nick for $3-4000 that would be perfectly good as a daily runabout for many years but my lady tells me that buying used in ukraine is very risky especially for a woman with no mechanical knowledge.
See, my preference would be for her to get a used western brand car, but for the above reason she would prefer to get a new "local brand" car because at least it would have a guarantee of sorts. Well to be honest I think these things are really poorly made and that an older western car for the same money would be a far better investment.
So, anybody any ideas as to how one could source a good used western brand car either in UA ? what are practicalities of buying one in a nearby western country and importing it ?.
bass,
Well they just happen to make Daewoo/Chevrolet cars in Zaporozhye.
But, I recall a discussion with best friend out there, we were talking about Hyundai's and I mentioned that in UK we get a 5 year warranty on them. She laughed and said you'd never get anything like that in Ukraine simply because of the condition of the roads, cars fall apart after a number of years so please bear that in mind if you're thinking of buying an older car.
You're buying a lady a CAR and admitting it in this forum?
I bought MY lady's mother an inexpensive refridge (as did another member here) and never heard the end of it. A whackjob here claimed that we were "buying" our women. Only later did it come out that same whackjob had bought a woman of his OWN - with the purchase price being a $100,000+ HOUSE.
Honestly - most Ukrainian younger women LOATHE the idea of getting something (anything) used. You see it as functional utility value in buying a preowned car. She sees it as acquiring someone else's cast-off.
When talking about possibly coming to America my fiance absolutely REJECTED the idea of buying a house that someone else had lived in. As far as she was concerned, no matter how nice, a used house was someone else's reject and she wanted no part of it. She only talked about building a NEW house.
It has to do with bragging rights and showing things off to her friends. A good functional, well made, used car is still something that that someone else didn't want. A NEW car has bragging rights.
(Before I end this post I will respond to the very likely detractors who will write and say that Ukrainian women can make do with very little and have HAD to by neccessity. Thats all true. But many YOUNG Ukrainian woman are very materialistic. They don't just want utility. Image is very important. Its why they will seldom be seen on the street in anything but their best clothes (which they then dutifully wash by hand for the next day). Older, more affluent Ukrainian women follow this trend to a lesser degree, but they still follow it.)
Its still in the highly theoretical stage at the moment - just exploring options. I've been very lucky to find someone who isn't especially materialistic or vain. I'm pretty sure shes being honest about her reasons.
Bassuk
We looked into buying when over there (Kiev) June-July.
Firstly – Re second hand cars.
Under 10K does not get you into much. Old and high ks and as you would have seen, the roads and streets bash the hell out of cars, so you will be up for ongoing cost right away.
We looked at buying New, a Mitsubishi 4x4 utility (we call it the Triton L200 model) diesel 2.7L Turbo. 134,000grv on road cost. There appeared to be most models (new) available and pay by cash or credit not a problem, but not sure about credit to foreigners ???
What surprised me was the attitude to the car sale people in the shops. You walk in and no one acknowledges you and there is like 12 people sitting behind computer screens etc. You ask about buying and they will reluctantly print some thing off 4u etc. The commission selling system hasn’t obviously caught on there yet ???
The Kia is a great little car and exc value for the money. A Kia Ceed is around the 100k-grv. But I don’t think they will be still great after 5 years thumping up and down those pot holed cobblestone streets !!
As I have said on here b4, there has been a huge increase in New cars in Kiev, credit is running rife and I had dinner with a Banker friend of Lena’s and he said people were very active on the “book it up on tick”
They have a strange attitude about some things, even him. He said that because people didn’t put money into banks as saving, they bought cars as an investment, I said “cars are a liability and depreciate the moment you drive it out of the shop” he couldn’t understand that and said “no, cars are easy to sell and we can get back what we paid later, he said a 3k Lada was that new and you can still get 3k for that same 15 year age car today”
Well – what could I say. Boy have they got some learning coming up !!!
Is that a loin cloth or did you mean CLOTHES, stupid?
Do you make her play Tarzan with your loin cloths? "Me Tarzan, you Jane." Did you install vines in the ramshackle hovel you're building for her? I'm sure it won't take much for her to uninstall them after you're dumped.
Did you ever think (I know, a odd concept for the Idiot) that once the house is done, on HER land, and you're out, that you have zero right or title to it? One call to immigration you overstaying visa idiot and they'll come and pick you up. LOL!
If you consider import of a used car you need to check the customs laws. After a car is so old it cannot be imported into Ukraine permanently if I remember right but am not sure where I read that at.
this is a link tha explaines about problems for imporying Cars to Ukraine.
But the other problem is most used imports are controlled by mafia .
It's not a easy process, i have looked very hard at this process as i have a friend who imports 100's of Vehicles to New Zealand every year, If any body does have any contacts regarding Wholesaling cars in Ukraine , I would like to speak with them.
An American guy I know here in Ukraine imported a beater Pontiac; at least 10 years old. The car was only worth a few thousand, but he ended up paying much more than that to do all the paperwork to get it released from customs and registered.
Buying cars privately (second hand) is not difficult. You must check all VIN and Serial numbers that the vehicle is owned by the person selling it. Then do the change over with the seller. That is more important and checked more stringently by the Traffic Police than drivers Licences. If you can’t prove ownership, you are in trouble.
There are heaps of cars for sale but beware there is also heaps of heaps also !!!
Here's my proposition
I will give 3 to 1 odds on just village
9 to 5 on Idiot
Even money on "It"
Spelling complete" village idiot" 25 to 1
Danny every time you post something here just confirms to me what a liar you are. Wouldn't surprise me him over staying his visa. He doesn't believe in laws of sovereign nations. What a lunkhead. Don't you have some worms to catch, chickens to feed, goats to have sex with? Wow fishing with worms, you should have a steady supply of worm picking them out of the feces you toss around here. What a sporting way to fish.
