Hi fellas, I am kinda new to this forum.
I have applied for a K-1 visa for my fiancee. Hopefully, she will be here (US) sometime before the end of the year.
I have a couple of airport/customs questions for you guys.
My girl is from Moldova. She will be transiting Frankfurt Germany before her flight to the U.S.
I know she will have to go through passport control when she arrives in Germany, then claim her bags before her next flight (on a different airline).
First, will she have to go through German customs before checking in for her next flight? If so, how do the Germans know that once she has cleared, she will not exit the airport and enter Germany without a German visa? Or, if not (go through customs) how does she check-in with the new airline (Delta, American, etc..)without doing this?
I have transited Frankfurt many times in the past. And the system is set up to go through passport control, claim one's bags, go through customs, and then enter the main check-in terminal for one's next international flight (if not on the some airline as the arrival).
Basically what I am asking is, will she have a problem with German customs due to the way things are set-up in Frankfurt?
Thanks or any insight and help with this guys!!
Spearman
Not sure if I can help...but I have been through frankfurt many times and I think it has restricted zone where you don't go through customs if you are going on connecting flight. I have never gone through passport control in frankfurt while connecting. I will do this exact flight as your fiancee in a couple weeks from Chisinau to LA through Frankfurt.
If airlines are associated in some way( codeshare) maybe you don't have to re-check-in luggage.
I do think I will have to re-check my bag though. Last time I flew moldovian to frankfurt and lufthansa to LA and my luggage went straight through. This time I am going on american. We'll see.
SpearMan,
Departing Moldava her destination, officially, will be Germany thus she will need the appropriate visa to enter Germany because they will not let her through passport control, which she would need to do to collect her bags, without an entry visa however the Moldavian check-in staff should deny her travel because when she is refused entry to Germany she will be sent back from where she came and that airline will receive a heavy fine if/for allowing her to travel.
So, by the book, she won't have a problem with the German authorities because she won't even get to Germany, she will be refused travel out of Moldova.

Am I wrong or does this mean if you have only 1 connecting flight to go to a 3rd country you don't need visa without leaving transit area. Maybe if booked together( all flights) there is no need to pick up luggage at airport and go through passport control. I know I didn't.
I guess getting out of moldova would be only question.....but with visa to usa why wouldn't she be allowed to leave. I know in Vienna, I had to go through passport control at airport to get on a connecting flight without picking up my bags.
Yes it will be a problem as Martin points out. Actually the problem will not be in Frankfurt it will be at Chisinau Airport as they won't let her board as her final distination is Frankfurt and she doesn't have a visa to enter Germany. (they will check). The fact she has a ticket to leave Germany a hew hours later doesn't matter, she is still entering Germany and needs a visa to do so. You think a Russian could turn up at LAX without a US visa, pass though customs and say don't worry guys I've on a flight to Mexico in the evening.
You really have to book connecting flights not single separate flights. At least she doesn't need a transit visa for Germany. If she was going via the UK she'd need a visa just to transit! Better also for her if you make it easy for her without have to pick up her bags.
beemer,
Well if one needs to collect bags then they must leave the transit area however this scenario if full of 'what if's'.
If 'TWOV' is a possibility it says one must be transitting to a third country by the first connecting flight, note it says country and not city. Not knowing where SpearMan lives but let's say it is Anchorage (taking this scenario to extremes) and the first connecting flight from Frankfurt is Lufthansa to Miami, well if one ain't ticketed on that flight to Miami then the Germans can refuse entry!
But the real problem may be check-in ang getting through passport control in Moldova, there are several 'what if's' here and either check-in or immigration only have to take one of these to the letter of the law and she won't be travelling.
If I were SpearMan I would establish how easy or difficult it will be to get a visa for Germany before deciding what he may do thereafter.
Ben...some airports in countries have restricted zones for transit/connecting passengers. I noticed this in Franfurt as does Paris have something similar where no visa is needed. I am just not as sure about Franfurt. I am sure a russian can land in Paris and have flight to another country where they have a visa for and it is no problem....just can't leave airport because you need to go through customs for that. In Frankfurt, it was long walk but I have not had to go through any passport controls when walking to my connecting flight.
Do you agree if all flights booked together, no visas needed? And no problem in Chisinau?
Ben...I'll send you PM, I'll be in Chisinau around 10th
Beemer..yes but if your flights are with airlines who do not cooperate then you have to collect your bags, depart and then go to arrivals and check in for the next flight. Eg if your flying United, LA to NY and have a connecting flight NY to London with American airlines, United won't check you through to London. (I'm assuming this as I don't fly with AA or United often).
"Do you agree if all flights booked together, no visas needed? And no problem in Chisinau?"
Yes, of course..but Spearman said he knew she had to collect her bags in Frankfurt. Probably hes thinking of getting her to fly air moldova and then another airline with no association with Air Moldova.
Thanks Beemer. I'm probably going to not be there as I'm stuck on a project as its delayed, plan to get to Chisinau around the 25th..I guessing you would have gone by then. A pity I wanted to check out that bar you mentioned :)
beemer,
All major international airports have transit areas, within the international areas, this is where one sees transit desks where one can pick up onward tickets/boarding passes without leaving the international area and/or passing through immigration, entering the country, and in most countries no visa is required to remain within the international area.
A 'classic' of Moscow SVO airport, to transfer from one terminal to the other terminal then one has to enter, though passport control, in to Russia thus, often, just to transfer flights a visa is required.
But, the baggage carousels are always the other side of passport control so if one needs to collect bags then one needs to enter the country so it doesn't matter if it is Paris, Frankfurt or wherever, if they need to collect bags then they will need any required visa to enter the country.
Going through customs has nothing to do with it, customs are the other side of the baggage carousels and are not there to check passports, it's passing through immigration/passport control that is the issue.
If one books with the same carrier on a multi-sector journey then, in theory, no transit visa will be required however rules are different from country to country and it also depends if one may need to enter the country if a change of terminals is required. But, even with the same carrier, with no visa they must stay in the international transit area the novelty of which might wear off after a wait of a few hours or so.
All the different information, the same information that check-in staff and travel agents have, can be sourced here:
Ben...I don't think Spearman is sure whether girl has to collect bags or not. It sounds like he hasn't booked any flights yet..maybe he doesn't have dates yet.
You are right if airlines are not associated, you will have to pick up bags and check in again. I think I will have to do this because I am flying with Malev then American back home but I don't have issue with visas.
As I said, I flew Lufttansa from LA to Frankfurt and Moldova to Chisinau and never saw my check-in till airport in Chisinau. I think if he made entire booking at one time it would be more convienient for all. I think it is possible to not have to get visa for germany.
Well, Spearman, care to chim in????
Well Ben...I tried couple times...timing is everything. I hear there is to be big festival while I am there....all for me I guess!! :))) Maybe I can send you pics of bar.....I will be the one in between all the girls!!!!! :)))
If you are worried get a transit visa. Shouldnt be difficult with onward tickets.
I have transited in many airports around the world and never had to get my bags. You ask for bags to be checked to final destination. It does not matter you are on a different airline. When you go to transit desk you need to show your baggage check even if it is checked all way through.
Get her to call the local office of the airline if you are still worried.
"Well Ben...I tried couple times...timing is everything. I hear there is to be big festival while I am there....all for me I guess!! :))) Maybe I can send you pics of bar.....I will be the one in between all the girls!!!!! :)))"
I know, you did :). Yeah the Wine festival. I tried to book last week and flights are expensive around this time (I only know my plans 2 weeks ahead). I'd only be there a week, but other work came up anyway. Poor timing on my behalf but thats work for ya.
Actually Frankfurt is a bit of a mission. Once I had a connecting flight, I followed the signs and ended up going though passport control (first time in Frankfurt). They asked how long i was staying. 5 mins I said. I figured I took a wrong turn somewhere as the next time and all other times I didn't need to go out.
To be sure, to be sure, do not rely upon the airlines being associated with each other.
To be sure, to be sure the passenger should be travelling on a single booking (ticket) whereas the entire route is on one itinery, i.e. KIV-FRA-USA on a single booking.
If one books, let us say, with Austrian Airlines KIV-VIE and then makes another seperate booking with another Star Alliance partner airline VIE-USA then that is 2 seperate bookings and for insurance purposes the baggage should not be checked-in all the way through. It should be made as one booking KIV-USA to be sure.
My fiancée visa took seven months to get approved and I sent them 41 pages of documentation. By all accounts that is the minimum amount of time it can take. Remember to send more documentation than they ask for, that way they will not come back 6 months later and ask for more... this alone will set you back another 7 months in your quest.
Now... enough with this insanity!
You will buy you fiancé a ticket to the USA, It does not matter what airline(s) she travels on.
Your fiancée will tell the Moldovan check-in agent to check her baggage all the way to the USA.
Your fiancée will stay in the "international zone" in Frankfort and will not need a visa when she changes planes.
Your fiancée will arrive in America go through passport control, collect her luggage then Customs and then move her bags to another place. They tell you where to put it (it is close by) for the next leg of her domestic travel to you.
I went through this with my Russian fiancé and I would suggest you to personally go to Moldova and travel back to the USA with her. She will want your company on this journey.

A 'classic' of Moscow SVO airport, to transfer from one terminal to the other terminal then one has to enter, though passport control, in to Russia thus, often, just to transfer flights a visa is required.
Wrong... Moscow SVO has international zones as do all major airports. How the hell do you think 15 million visitors a year travel through Moscow??? (they don's issue visas to everyone that is traveling "through" Russia). When you arrive in Moscow follow the "TRANSIT" signs (written in English) when you exit the plane, they do not staff these "transit points" with lots of agents but they "know" when you are there and they quickly (ha! ha!... several hours) get you to the correct airport to catch your connecting flight (using personal escorts).
Beemer18,
I'm thinking of visiting a gal in Chisinau and I will probably be going very soon, It would be cool to meet for a beer somewhere if we are there at the same time!
Mini Cooper
Coop....be in Chisinau in a couple weeks, wine festival, so lots of celebrations. Got a couple friends there to look after me. I was hoping to meet up with Ben but he is working and I am on holiday.
Anybody transitted through Vienna had to go through passport controls, similar to immigration. First time for me and I was just trying to get connecting flight, almost missed my plane. Cooper, are you saying that in Chisinau if I check in my bags with Malev, they will transfer my check-in bags to my american flight in Frankfurt, just by telling them to? I have 2 separate bookings. If so, I will try. If not, I know where to find you!!!
"All major international airports have transit areas, within the international areas"
"Moscow SVO has international zones as do all major airports."
USA airports do not have transit areas and they are international airports. Most people from FSU
countries cannot connect through US cities for flights to other countries without visas.
TWOV (Transit Without Visa):
Visa required, except for Those continuing their journey
within 24 hours without leaving the airside (international)
transit area:
- if continuing by a domestic flight (also including Belarus)
or if the airport of arrival is different from the airport
of departure within the same Russian city (e.g. arriving at
Sheremetyevo-2 and departing from Sheremetyevo-1 airport in
Moscow) then a transit visa is required, as one is entering
territory of the Russian Federation.
Additional Information:
- Passengers are required to hold return/onward tickets and
documents required for the next destination.
- Valid visas in expired passports or other expired travel
documents are not accepted.
Spearman: Separate tickets or not, (even if they are not "plated" by the same supplier), she can check her baggage through to final destination when she checks in at Kishinev. She stays in international transit in Frankfurt and she finally crosses immigration again when she arrives in the promised land.
Hey Guys, thanks a lot for the info.
Here are more specifics with my experiences in Frankfurt.
Arriving in FRA from KIV: Rode on bus to the terminal, then was corralled to passport control. I don't remember seeing any sign or turn that would have led me to an 'international transit area'. Or, did I just miss this two times (I might have in all of the confusion and race to be in front at passport control)??
In my situation, I bought separate tickets for cost reasons.
Ben2006
'Once I had a connecting flight, I followed the signs and ended up going though passport control (first time in Frankfurt). They asked how long i was staying. 5 mins I said.'
Exactly!!
But, for flying my girl to USA, I think you guys may be right about getting one booking all the way through.
However, in theory! If one were to not have checked any luggage, and purchased separate tickets on a different connecting airline, one should be able to hang-out in the transient terminal w/o needing any sort-of visa (as MartinFcc and others pointed out). So therefore, it should be understood in Moldova how international airports work (not only Moldova for that matter) if someone can proof of a further destination they should not deny boarding. E.G. I could still purchase a single itinerary from KIV-FRA-USA and the lovely people in Chisinau don't know if my real intentions are to try to enter Germany.
I don't want to get too wrapped around the axle here, but I just don't remember seeing this option (international transient) when I arrived in FRA. And buying separate tickets MAY be significantly cheaper in some cases.
Mini Cooper.. I have though long and hard how I will do this. And, we've both agreed that me having as much vacation time when she first arrives here is more valuable than burning 3-4 traveling to meet her.
