Here's a really radical suggestion - try keeping to the topic of the original post! Most threads start with something interesting, but too many unfortunately degenerate far too soon. I've seen mentions in other threads recently about how attacks have turned new members away - I'm not in that situation because I'm not likely to be asking questions that might invite ridicule. I've been to Russia (admittedly only once, although I hope to go again within the next couple of years), having made all my own arrangements and having had a wonderful time (OK, the girl wasn't right for me, but that's a minor detail). Since I joined this forum I've seen some really good advice handed out, but I've also seen so much absolute crap dished up that I almost feel like leaving because most of the threads turn into a nonsensical waste of time. Please, guys, step back and do yourselves (and everyone else) a favour by taking a look at what you've written BEFORE you hit the SEND button. Why, in the space of 10 threads, should I have to wade through 4595 attacks on Danny? And no, that doesn't need an answer! As for calling each others' wives or girlfriends "prostitutes" or "whores," words fail me. I'm presuming here that this particular occupation is not one that is (or has been) followed by the ladies in question, therefore the statements are libellous. Does the great American tradition of "freedom of speech" over-ride what is the law in most countries around the world? Or is the other great American tradition of suing the pants off all and sundry not an option? Just because someone is different or does things differently leaves them open to scrutiny and ultimately judgement by those who are too insecure to be their own person. A pack mentality. Recently a new guy asked a relatively docile but rookie question and got jumped for it. Called an idiot right from the start. Why a guy gets hammered here is not for a difference of opinion. He gets hammered because of stupidity. We've had a litany of new guys get hammered by a few stupid people. Though I'm may be considered one of the trouble makers by the more PC crowd, my intent is to help new guys. I'm no expert, I've been married to a lady from Mariupol for going on three years. You want to know about Kiev, Mariupol or Yalta I can help. You need to watch, there are more scams in these forums than the women will ever pull on new guys. It's far from Pack mentality. It's guys with common sense refuting idiots. I've known Jet a long time, he has an issue with Dunromin at the moment. I like Jet, but Dunromin has done nothing to me. So where's the pack mentality Kirk? Pact mentality is just eupehmism for neutrality, even though you agree with Pack. Lack of security' nope I will disagree. It's insecure to not challenge idiocy. As for freedom of speech, it has it limits. You can't yell fire in a theatre. Though suing a fool for idiotic statements in a forum like this is like shoving jello through a garden hose. "I'm in total agreement with Billy Carter, "Kill all the lawyers and Kill them tonight" I've taken this search very seriously and it worked for me. Maybe that's why I don't take to ignorant stupid remarks so well. This is a serious undertaking for many. It doesn't need to be polluted by idiots who just want to destroy the ambition of others. Most of us really want to help a new guy who comes in. That's what we are here for. There is a certain brotherhood here. What offends some of us occasionally is when people come in and start flailing about and making ridiculous statements, or unduly attacking another member or a practice advocated without reason. If a new person, or even one who has been here a while, attacks someone else, he can expect a response from the person attacked. There is nothing new and revolutionary about that. There IS very little pack mentality here. Generally if a person is refuted en-masse it is because he has attacked others en-masse. The situation with danny is a good example of this. Its hard to find a single regular writer who danny hasn't attacked. Thats why he tend to receive neagative responses from all of us. I DO have an issue with dunromin (and happen to believe that he is an ignorant pompous ass) but you will note that it has been my issue alone. Pack mentality would suggest that others would ALSO go head to head against him. You'll notice that they haven't. Neither have they attacked me. This is a one-on-one dispute so far and properly its been kept that way by the forum. There are disputes that nasfan has had and while I respect his opinion, I don't necessarily share his dispute. I tend to steer clear in those situations. That is not to say I will not comment if the issue is one that I am interested in, but I will try to comment so as not to provoke either side. Now sometimes in a dispute that nasfan might be having (for instance) the other party will broaden the attack, or wil call in subject matter that I do have issues with. Then of course I WILL join in, but there has to be good reason. It would be great to be able to stay on the subject matter specific to the title of the thread. But that would require much stronger moderation than we have now. Some threads are started to answer a simple question. And when that question is answered shoud the thread necessarily DIE? The fact that you've decided to split your life between east and west (although for us it's north-west and a bit more north-west!) is also something that I've vaguely considered, so I may well ask for advice if I think about it a bit more seriously. In response to the others - Kirkland: I haven't realy noticed a pack mentality yet (apart from attacking Danny, which everyone seems to do in their own way), but then I've only been here for a short time. Nasfan: thank you - I think your last paragraph sums up what this forum is (or should be) all about. Jetmba: I've been watching your spat with Dunromin with a bemused look, but surely by now you could both put it to bed? Most of the posts from both of you are full of sensible advice, and it seems a shame that what appears to me to have started as a misunderstanding has escalated into Forum War III! The question about moderation is also one that I've wondered about. To me, the threads (or at least the individual posts) referring to prostitutes and whores should have been yanked as soon as there was a complaint. If this was a porn fetish site, maybe fair enough, but it isn't - for me, there's no place on here for this sort of rubbish.
