Thinking of a road trip. Flying into Kiev and renting a car. Stopping off at a few places with Odessa being the destination.
The problem: I do not speak very good Russian. I can read ok but suspect I'd get confused on road signs.
Anyone going?
Anyone interested in a road trip?
My plans do not have to fall under this time frame.
Another possibility is to hire a student interpreter that wouldn't mind traveling. Any help in directions for this? Hire in Kiev? Plus on a 10 day trip would $50.00 bucks a day + meals be ok?
i know kyiv is getting cold by then, or so olya told me on the phone tonight! though only about 5 degrees right now. i wouldn't like to drive in mid december, even to odessa. the roads in kyiv are pretty bad. one day on the bus back home from town, our bus went passed a dead body on the road being photographed by the police. trust me... not a good experience. we drank vodka as soon as we got home! /pete

MIKE00
The $100 TATTOO
Larry gets home late one night and his wife, Linda, says, 'Where in the hell
have you been'?
Larry replies, 'I was out getting a tattoo'.
A tattoo?' she frowned. 'What kind of tattoo did you get?'
I got 2 x $50 notes on my penis,' he said proudly.
'What the hell were you thinking'? she said, shaking her head in disdain.
'Why on earth would an accountant get a hundred dollars tattooed on his
privates?'
'Well, one, I like to watch my money grow.
Two, once in a while I like to play with my money.
Three, I like how money feels in my hand.
And, lastly, instead of you going out shopping, you can stay
right here at home and blow a hundred dollars anytime you want'.
Martin; indeed that is my point. When I said road, should really have said route.
Gets to -15° in winter there and even less. Last year a girl I know there in the south tells me it's -15 and the power to the town has been cut for 2-3 days now. (no gas..all electric) I'm thinking f**k me talk about hardship.
Better use a 4WD or better still a 4 track.
If you're going to get an interpreter make sure you get one that doubles as 3 armed bodyguards.
And FFS don't stop for anything, especially if you're using a western car.
Kirkland,
I recall one winter day I stood outside the apartment thinking that there was a nip in the air, when I got in the car it read that the outside air temperature was -18, later that morning standing in the middle of Dnepr airport the wind chill must have doubled that -18 to -36 :)

Best reply was the potholes being filled in with ice! Loved it. Well maybe my patience or lack of is getting the best of me. I would like to knock out all cities in one trip. Maybe I will need to wait for spring for that to happen. Shoot. I mean..I could just go to Odessa. Arrrgh.... I want to see all the girlies! :-)
It is a long way from kiev to Odessa on a bus. They travel about 30 miles an hour and stop every so often for smokes and bathroom.
The bus is about as fast as the slow train. Get a sleeper express train. Would be better to stop half way in between if you have other places to visit then it is an overnight train. One shot would probably be over a 20 hour ride. The train is usually a fairly smooth ride especially compared to a bus.
As my Russian gal says,
"In Russia, 9 months of winter and 3 months not so good to skate."
In West Virginia we said, "9 months of winter and 3 months road repair."
Kirklanddude: In West Virginia, most had 4wheel drive but it is not "manly" to be engaged in 4wheel drive. My friend driving down the mountain from work in the mines slid off in the ditch finding himself totally upside down. When approached from behind he said, "Boys if I can get her in 4wheel drive, I think I can get her out of here!"
TD you have Lineage from WVA? My family is from Weston.
LMMFAO about the 4wd line, that's the truth!!! I remember when my great grandfather died, it was in 1976 we went back, He didn't have electricity, Running water was was a hand pump in the sink, he had a crescent stove to cook and heat water. Smoked ferociously and drank his own liquor and taught me that you sip good whisky you don't pound it down. Had his own crops and animals and lived off his land. High technology, he bought an old tractor with steel wheels instead of the mules he used to use. Funny, he was chopping his own wood until 98 and died in his sleep at 103, the mailman found him after missing him for three days at the end of his lane to greet him and get his mail.
I really learned what secret to a long life was and he was a man amoung men.
And to think they make fun of the people from Applachia
Yeah nasfan6, I'm from West "By God" Virginia. A real ridgerunner from Greenbrier county now living in Texas.
It's interesting that many Russian gals are city dwellers but I've enjoyed talking to them about gardening/farming. Every hillbilly will talk about his garden. The Russians go to dachas and have vegetable/flower gardens. They can vegetables, tomatoes, soups, put up jams and jellies just like down home! I'd love to be stirring a big copper pot of apple butter outside about now. Stirring all day, tending the fire, smoking, chewing, drinking, talking. So it's been fun to talk with them about the country.
To nasfan6's great grandfather -Mountaineers Are Always Free-
TD you aren't kidding about gardens. The first thing the wife dreamed of having was a large garden. So I tilled a half acre for her. Hell I hate gardening because as a kid my father made me work in it while my buddies where out playing football. The city girls do love the country because they don't get to it much. She and I'm not kidding would literally spend hours in the damn thing along with the numerous flower gardens I had to do for her. She said its theraputic. Theraputic my ass!!!It's work!!
Yeah, old Benjamin, lived the life of a day gone by. I envy him now, he lived long because he didn't have stress in his life. His stress was his land and God what a beautiful 55 acres he had. He had very little material, but as far as I'm concerned he had everything. I wish my father hadn't sold that land. It would have been cool in my early twenties to live the way he did. Hell I probably would have never come back because his view from his back porch which I still have burned in my brain. He told me once that living where he was as close to being in heaven without being dead. He said you could touch heaven from there.
