the flight and jet lag sucks, next time I pay the higher price and have fewer layovers.I am here in Sumy good thing its not to cold yet. from what I have seen of the city so far it is a nice city. thee are a lot of great looking women all over the place. you cant go 100 feet without seeing a hot looking lady. I even seen a McDonalds on the way into town. there are cafe's and all kinds of stores close to my flat.(thanks Beemer} I have a lady who I can call to interpret things for me any time I need.
In the airport while I was waiting I was talkng to one of the cab drivers who speaks english. his name is Denis, if you hagle you can get a decent rate from him but he is just like the rest of us working for a living. he can also find last minute apartments resonable. 100 usd for a 1 bedroom in Kyiv isnt to high for last minute 140 usd for one with a jacuzzi all close to krishatik. I have his number if you want it pm me. the exchange rate cant be beat right now its almost 7 to 1 makes every thing cheep. more to come.
Good luck Bowhunter!!!! Should be geting cold anytime soon!!!! Guess you will have to waer a jacket and have girl warm you up too.
I always try to get the shortest trip possible. Layovers are a drag...nothing worse than sitting around in an airport for hours. I am lucky I live in big city, so I can get to ukraine with only one stop. This past trip, for first time I stayed overnight in frankfurt, so when I got to Odessa the following morning, I was refreshed.
What was cost of taxi from kiev airport to Sumy? My friend told me he paid was $200 recently, I thought that was kind of expensive.
cool! i'm glad you made it! it still might be another week before i can move to kyiv, but i hope not. i paid 100$ a night for a one bedroom flat near the centre of kyiv for my first 12 days there last time. i thought that was pretty good. olya just told me that it's actually been quite warm there today, but i'm sure the cold weather will come in soon! /pete
since my girl arranged the taxi so she could be there to meet me I think it was 200, 100 each way one way is still around 125 if you shop around. at this time of year a lot of people seem to get the flu here, the lady I rented the room from is ill I have to wait till later today to pay her and the lady I am seeing is sick also. I do have a back up plan if she dosnt get better soon. I will probably be here for another 5 days then to Kyiv to meet with Pete and Olya before I head back.
You chaps need to harden up a bit :-)))) - NO pun intended.
You should try travelling from down under NZ - Kiev. Done it non stop a few times now, and I cant sleep on planes, so approx 50 hours without sleep.
Good luck BH - weather will be cooler mid next week, but its still a beautiful time of year to see the sights.
well I did not sleep for 2 days between the time change and the flights. I did finally sleep last night it really isnt that bad. the cold dont bother me we have some cold winters where I am from.
I just read your post Pete your going to make your lady mad again if you dont hurry up and get here. if your not here on the 4th I will be back in July maybe we can meet up then.
That's something my wife does miss here in the states. All the good cafe's around Ukraine. I don't care if it's Kiev or Mariupol, there isn't anything like that here. The closest thing here is starbucks and that's pretty much overpriced crap.
I also never had a bad meal in Ukraine. No matter where we ate out it was awesome and real inexpensive compared the states and the service you get is way above what I was accustomed to. I don't know why many guys look for western style food, like O'Briens etc. Get a taste of Ukraine and sample the life. The beer is okay, though I do like their Cognac. Everytime we make a trip my buddies are ordering Vodka out the ass for us to bring back. Sample their lifestyle because if you bring her back home she's going to bring her country with her.
We eat predominately Ukrainian dishes, though I still sneak out and grab the occasion artery hardener cheeseburger. She also likes American barbeque which surprised me somewhat beyond that it's been difficult to find a place besides Olive Garden she likes to eat out at.
I have to say the food is good at least where I have eaten. it was cheep compared to american food. nasfan dont feel bad it saves you some bucks with her not going to eat out much.
The jet lag has never bothered me going over but it really kicks my butt on the way back. How did you route bowhunter to spend two days. Flight time is normally 18 or 19 hours from mid USA. Although this next one is going to be longer. I took Martins advice and will stay a day in New York on the way back. Flight comes in at 4:35 PM and the latest reasonable flight involves transfer from JFK to Laguardia airport and leaves at 6 PM.
Bowhunter...are you positive about taxi being only $100 each way, if so you got a great deal. That was prices year and a half ago and I know gas prices are higher now. Trip is about 200 miles from Kiev airport. Cheapest I've seen are $150 each way.
What is this talk of....2 days....50 hours.....depending on which direction you are going...and please, just count the body hours...forget the change in time zones, that doesn't count.
I had around 10 hours of layovers 5 hours in Amsterdam and a little over 4 in detroit. the rate for the cab was in auh. with the exchange rate it was close to 110 each way. I did see an advertised rate of 100 euros I will ask monday what the current rate is. I did find an interpreter for 5 usd an hour most want 15 now.
Bowhunter, I'm not worried about a few bucks for dinner, she's just enjoys dressing up and going to dinner. Nearest good restaurant is an hour away. Which is either Louisville,Cincinnati or Indianapolis.
I love the food in Ukraine. We have our special restaurant in Mariupol called "Our Meeting Place" it has a statue of some famous Ukrainian entertainer outside. Glass rooms so you can see the people go by as you eat. Great Place for food and meeting. It's on Prospect Lenina.
nasfan next time your in cincy let me know I only live 50 miles from there. they do like to dress up thats one of the good thing about these women. I think in july I am going to visit a few more city's.
Bowhunter, I work in Cincy for BDI, I'm only in the office about once a week but we go there alot. She likes to shop at Jungle Jims because of the foreign foods she can get there.Especially the Moldovan wine. Living in Madison Indiana, there is nothing like that here. They have a Russian food Store in Louisville that we shop at a lot also. like I said before I very seldom eat American cuisine unless we cook out which she likes and it's about the only thing she likes. Got her to eat venison which surprising she liked. Until I told her what its was. She gets a kick out of the deer and turkey walking through our yard. Who says a city girl can't change LOL! She's amazed with the nature because they don't see that in Mariupol.
well if you hunt im the man to talk to in Ohio. I cant wait to get back to deer hunting when I get home lol. i do know jungle jims they have a lot of stuff in there, I am more of a basspro shopper. the lady I am visiting here has family in the country, she prefers to live there but cant get a job in the country.
bowhunter...i see why your price was low, since hyrvnia is at 7-1 to dollar, but you would have to pay in hyrvnia to get the better price. Most prices are based on about a 5-1 ratio, which it has been in past couple years. I don't understand why some started to quote in euros....stinkin euros,
where else do you end up walking around with a pocket full of coins, don't go very far with bills!!
Pnove hunting is a tradition that goes back to the beginings of my country. I have traveled to many countries even some that see dogs as food and not pets. in every country I travel to I try to respect the customs and culture of each place I visit. I hope one day you will mature and do the same. by the way deer is better for you than big mac or beef.
beemer I payed in hyrvnia well acutally the lady I came to see arranged it and I payed it. I agree about stinkin euros the airport in amsterdam only had prices in euros. some of the web sites from Russia/Ukraine are listing prices in euros now. my flat in Kyiv was quoted in euros. I still got it for 80 usd I got the 1 room only need it for a night before I head out.
