gary cook and 'yellow shirt' - they are always at the irish, get them to get your appartment... things to do... tatyana with the boobs, at the irish also, only $100 US an hour, fantastic time!
i don't think i'll be travelling too much around ukraine until spring or summer, but i'll be here in kyiv if anyone wants to meet up for a drink or whatever. we are going to skadovsk for new years though... damn i hate those trains! /pete
For accommodations, do you want a hotel or apartment?
For things to do, do you want places to take a lady, or places to meet ladies? Do you want a decent cafe with wifi, or nice restaurants to impress a girl?
BTW, the working girls are no longer allowed at the Irish Pub, unless they come in with a client.
Well I've arranged an apartment now. But VNVnation - all of the above basically :-). It would be nice to know where to meet girls actually in case of no-show or things just not working out.
OK, so for meeting girls, Friday night I would suggest Captain Morgan on Ekaterinskaya three blocks up from Deribasovskaya. Friday nights at Morgan are usually pretty busy, the music is good, there are go-go girls dancing on the bar, and usually a lot of local girls. Saturday night, probably Palladium if you are into big discos.
For nice restaurants to take a girl, the girls here all seem to like Fanconi, Yokogama, and Voyage. Fanconi is on Ekaterinskaya one block down from Deribasovskaya; it has good sushi and normal dishes too. It's a good place to hang out and drink some wine and talk to a girl. Yokogama is at the end of Deribasovskaya near the big church, they have good sushi but it is very expensive. For me, Voyage is nothing special, but girls seem to like it because it is very expensive. Another possibility is Vis-a-Vis; it's a nightclub/restaurant on the second floor right at the corner of Deribasovskaya and Ekaterinskaya. If you go at night on the weekend, and want to eat at a table, there is a big minimum, but it can be a fun place.
For a normal cafe, I would suggest Grand Cafe on Ekaterinskaya two blocks down from Deribaskovskaya or Top Sandwich on the corner of Deribasovskaya and Ekaterinskaya. Same menu at both places, nothing fancy, but decent food at regular prices and wifi that usually works. I also like a little cafe directly across the street from the Mozart Hotel; I think it is called Solieri. It's just a normal place, but it has a nice view out on the park and it very pleasant. If you want to read a menu in English and hang out with drunk foreigners, the Irish Pub is always open.
For "tourist" things, you have to see the inside of the Opera Theater. It was renovated and it quite beautiful. The other nice thing to do is to walk along the promenade behind the opera theater, down the Potemkin steps, and under the road to the pier (Morvoxhal). If it is not too cold, it is beautiful at night or early morning. Actually today, it was quite warm, so maybe the weather will hold for the weekend.
If you are walking on Deribasovskaya or the promenade, try to avoid the police. They have been very active lately harassing foreigners, asking to see your "documents", and trying to get a few dollars.
Really I went on this trip 50% to see a particular girl and 50% because I needed to get "back on the horse" after recent events. Had doubts about girl from the outset, we exchanged a few emails on elena's of which hers were all one liners but she gave me her cell # so I we spoke a few times no phone, she was very quiet strangely shy really for someone who to be fair is pretty stunning looking but she assured me that she did like my profile and wanted to meet although all the time she didn't betray any real enthusiasm in her voice (Girl is 31 5'7ish long jet black hair and called "julia" in case anyone comes across her).
So still with misgivings I headed over to Odessa for the weekend to meet her hoping that her apparent lack of enthusiasm might just be phone manner or general shyness. Sadly when we met she displayed every bit as much indifference to me in person as she had over the phone, she hardly made any eye contact with me, didn't ask me any questions and wanted to go home after 2 hours in a cafe. So there I was at 9pm on the night I arrived on my own already wondering why the hell she had dragged me all that way (and in all fairness why I expected any other outcome given what I've already said), it certainly wasn't money - she ran her own design business, drove to meet me in own nissan maxima and was very insitent on paying for half our bill (which is a first for me in the FSU ...)
So, having come prepared with a tentative plan B I went looking for the Irish Pub and in there met an american guy called joel who lives there and his friend a girl called tatanya who is married to an english guy (if your reading and you know who you are - your wife is a star :-) ). After a chat a few drinks tatanya drags me and joel down to "the love cafe" which is kind of bar/club hybrid and we revel away a few hours with the locals (don't think there were any other foreigners about) and I almost manage to hook with a local girl but blow it when I tell her I'm not there on business but out looking for a girl, lesson learned ... well at this point I was considering declaring time on what was a pretty fun evening to be honest but T had other ideas and dragged us round a few dodgy karaoke bars until me and joel were comatose with exhaustion at about 4:30 am.
Next day I try to make contact with a couple of plan-B girls but cant raise anyone, so I log onto the club10 wesite and see if there is anyone on live chat in odessa. Sure enough I get chatting to girl called olga who in really was a bit old for me - about 46 but anyway we met up and had a really walk on the promenade that afternoon. Still needing some company for the evening and with all other avenues fruitless I take action of last resort - walk into a high-street marriage agency.
Managed to get a date set for 7pm. Well on paper the lady was actually a fairly good prospect - early 30's doctor, nice looking, intelligent but sadly there was no spark for me I think really she was almost too "traditionally ukranian/russian" - comically unfashionable clothes (especially noticeable in a place like Odessa) and very religious bringing her girl up as a strict jew, but no doubt whatever about her seriousness at least as far as I could tell. Had a very pleasant few hours with her though, a really really nice genuine lady. Kind of got me thinking that maybe the cat-like sexiness that I like about FSU women is mutually exclusive with any kind of moral core, this lady was certainly way over the other side of the spectrum from every other FSU woman I've met.
After we said our goodbyes I headed off to Captain Morgan's. More up market than the love cafe and with a few foreigners around. Place was heaving with stunning women a good proportion of whome seemed intent on ignoring all the men (even the obviously well off locals) and I can only imagine were there to preen their feathers and show of to each other, a bit strange to be honest but there you go. Certainly foreign accents are very passe to the denziens of this particular venue.
That's about it really. Can certainly validate what other people have said about Odessa in recent threads. ZERO probability of finding a single childless early-20's woman looking to leave although probably not to hard to find one for some entertainment so long as she thinks your there "on business". Down town area is quite small with all the main spots with a few minutes walk of each other (in stark contrast to say Kiev). The band who play irish folk at the pub are AMAZING and there does seem to be a bit of burgeoning ex-pat. I'll probably be back at some point as its quite a friendly unimposing place for foreigners.
thanks for sharing your story with us. It seems you have the right attitude. Its a cruel joke that the most beautiful woman have the moral fiber of a viper. Personally, I think Kiev has more woman who are down to earth and available.
did you like the marriage agency you went to? I mean did you feel they treated you fairly? If so, why don't you give us some details.
I can say I didn't have a good feeling I got from the agency in Londonskaya hotel.
Thanks for the story Bassuk, I enjoy reading experiences of others. Great that you wanted to get back on that horse. Too bad you picked a girl that you had doubts about early. These girls with one-liners are not really looking for a guy, I saw it with girls on fiance. The only girls that seemed sincere were ones that send me long detailed specific letters.
Did you call your Plan B's before u left to let them know you will be in Odessa on weekend?
I always do and also give them my ukrainian number to call.
When I am asked why I am in ukraine, I usually say I am meeting with friends..not a lie.
What did you pay to agency to set up date? I have done that one time in Kiev, it was $40 per meeting. I felt like these girls are only daters. Where else can they call a girl and get you date for same day in less than a half hour? One place in Odessa wanted $150 for meeting with one girl...I asked if dinner was included!!!! Rip off!!!!
There are girls in mid/low 20's that is willing to leave...but only for the right guy. I know of a couple girls that are sincere and honest, we just didn't click. I met with a 22yr old on my last visit that is as sincere and sweet a girl as I have ever met( from anastasia)... if I wasn't 'seeing' in another girl, my total attention would be on her. Over time, I have developed a pretty good idea of a girl's intentions....certainly not 100% though.
The agency I went to was "adam and eva" which is just opposite the Irish Pub. The lady who runs it was very efficient but if your expecting friendly service from anyone then you come to wrong country ...
Thanks Bassuk. I'm not a newbie though, and few things surprise me anymore. But consider this. I'm at the agency in odessa at londonskaya hotel, I select a girl for date, the lady picks up the phone to call her, but first asks me for the $50. I say I don't have it on me, but could you call her to see if she is even interested. Well, you can guess the rest of the story.
Unfortunately this was an agency associated with afa, one of the few agencies I still felt was somewhat trustworthy.
