hi all... i tried to start a blog here of life in ukraine, but my post didn't appear so i wrote my own blog script... but just now i checked again and my blog post here has just shown up! anyway... i'll keep my main blog mostly on my own website for now as i've just got it online again. in case anyone is at all interested, the address is:
http://www.purpletartan.com/DzhopHav.cgi
the name of the cgi script is kind of silly, you may be able to work out why i called it that! lol... i'll be putting piccies of kiev there too that i take.
Nice site Pete. Loved the photos.
I had nostalgic few moments on the photos the apartment blocks.
Even your little lady reminds me of someone I used to know. Same looks, same perfect skin and same innocence when posing for a photo.
Congrats are in order...she's a looker with a smile of openness and complete sincerity.
Hope you are both very happy...I'm sure you are despite the -20° odd it looks to be there.
cheers kirkland! she is very cute... :-) and we are very happy! *and* it's not too cold at the moment... just checked and our balcony thermometer says -4, which is about as cold as it has been recently. you lived in eastern europe before then? sorry... i lose track of who has been where from this forum! cheers... /pete
cheers! it was a good start until i managed to delete my blog script yesterday and had to rewrite it! i'll keep backups from now on... lol! i'd like to see your photos. it snowed a bit again today so i took another couple of photos, sometime i might even leave our flat to make some more photos! /pete
Pete -4° is nothin! Been -6 here lately. Hasn't really been this cold in my neck of the woods for years so its a nice change.
Never lived in fsu for a great length of time, have holidayed and been on business more frequently.
Thought about buying a place in Crimea before but the relationship I was in at the time turned sour and ...well the rest is history I suppose.
Was crazy about her though....looked alot like your little lady.
Wasn't so crazy about the life there....too much of a culture shock for an old guy to make the changes needed to make a real go of it....leave it to the younger guys with more patience.
Kiev is great but after a few trips there you realises its just bars clubs and hookeers,
and when it drops to -20c you realise its just not the place to be,
The Crimea is quit nice ,much warmer and not so touristy, and much more reasonable when it come to prices and living here
The M-In-law is reporting some very disturbing news.
70,000 criminals getting released from prison !!!
Car manufacturing closing down (no surprise there)
Robbery and road side hold-ups common now. Especially petrol stations and jewellery shops !!!
Presidents priority decision for December is to protect and preserve the fly Bat !!!!
Pension stopping 1st January.
Half the city lost heating last week
10,000 jobs lost per day and climbing
Grv now @ 10 – 1 against the US$ and 14 – 1 against the Euro
Restaurants closing down – the M-In-law controls supply for 3 restaurants and they have just shut the doors
Hey maxi, where did that info come from...a newspaper?
Geez, another 70,000 criminals running the streets, no big deal, they'll just have to compete with the other 200,000 or so out and about..... ;-))
Roadside holdups??? That happens everytime the police pulls over a car.
If I read anymore, I'll think ukraine will slide into the black sea. To be serious, for a moment, free market economies go through their up and downs, ukrainians haven't dealt with this before, the world will not come to an end though many people will think this. Imagine living through the Depression of 1930's......Next year at this time I believe the economies will be back on an upswing. I do understand there will be those that their lives will be devastated.....and I do feel bad for them. I have one girl writing me that thinks that maybe capitalism is flawed and maybe things were better before...I'm working on her.....

”Roadside hold-ups ??? That happens every time the police pulls over a car” Yea that’s a good one
:-)))))
We are hearing things every day on how things are worsening in Kiev. My wife’s mother mixes daily with working and retired people in Kiev. My wife also corresponds with ex work mates and friends on a regular basis.
Anyway – you sound a lot more positive than me, time will tell.
The Ukraine people might not have dealt with free market ups and downs b4, but they can handle harder times better than most of us, they have had plenty of practice !!!
I have been here in Ukraine since February and apart for the GRV going down against other currencies I haven’t notice major problems, the only issue is the increase in corruption, much worst from before, especially police and judicial system, it always has been corrupt, but now is reaching ridiculous proportions, and there is no secret, the local Procura (High Investigative Police) has a price list KFC style….. Honestly I am not quite sure where all this will lead to…..
I would imagine Kiev will take it harder, but the likes of Odessa which handle large amounts of imports must be feeling it too. Car plants shutting and steel production exports stopping will hurt Kharkov etc. Imports are stalling, letters of Credit for goods coming into Ukraine are not getting through to sellers – so imports are slowing big time.
Kiev has been living in a more flamboyant lifestyle, so they will take it more on the nose.

Little surprised with your comments, but definably interested to hear and I do not disagree with your comments, but perhaps you seem to be seeing things very different to us. My wife’s ex work colleague (works in Government Dept Welfare) just emailed today and said her payment last month was only 1370grv. This is back to 2005 level, and she then said that next months payment might not even come. Also the normal administration of city duties (street cleaning etc) are falling behind.
On the surface this place has an appearance of calm for now, but to mention an example how thinks work in “my town” (and I am confident the same in the majority of Ukraine) there is a group of about 6 solicitors (Advocate) all ex police people (I don’t know how they got the degree in law) it is just a front, they take money (only US dollars) and then distribute those money to the appropriate police department on behalf of the “client”, that includes Judges, high police personal, Procura (they suppose to be “untouchable”) and I suspect some element of the SBU, not to mention any government official in a reasonable position. Effectively the law has been “privatised” to the best offer. They prefer getting Ukrainian clients as foreigners are not to be trusted but are a perfect target for extract money, the elaboration and the tactics they use are astonishing. Sadly they have no conscience, they don’t care about anyone, and they will put in jail their own brothers for $100 US. I have to say that in my opining this reflect the negative side of the Ukrainian culture, this country is very politically and socially immature. In this country the majorities are wonderful people, but even they have to operate on a day to day basis, applying the same rules of survival as anyone else.
majority are wonderful people? the place is ranked the most corrupt Caucasian nation in the world. Trailing only a handful of African countries. I think some of the people are wonderful. The majority are average at best.
Lets keep it real. A country growing up out of soviet rule and without religion for the last 100 years is not going to produce a nation of mother Theresa's.
In a civilized country, when exists a person who lies to peoples faces about serious issues WITHOUT any remorse, these people are deemed 'psychopaths'.
In some cultures, this would be considered the norm.
Quasimodo, i'm afraid to ask where you lived BEFORE ukraine.
well, yes... i did get an exchange rate of over 14:1 at an atm the other day! (ukp/hrv) but apart from that life just is going on as normal at the moment here.
i haven't been into the centre of town for a while, we want to go soon anyway to (hopefully!?) see the christmas decorations. shops are as busy as ever here, roads are being cleaned and rubbish taken away each day just like before. sand was put down on pavements as soon as the snow turned to ice.
of course we've been talking about the price of dollars, and i noticed on a website (underwear) that olya was looking at the other day, that some things had gone up by as much as 15%. food is the same though, but of course people are still complaining at the increase in cost of buses and metro. they should have increased the price *ages* ago, it's just the shock of the sudden increase i guess. but still 20p isn't too bad for a bus or metro ride! :-)
the ukp is back to around 12 and usd sitting at around 9. they want to fix it at around 6.5 which just sounds silly to me. i think it would be good if it could just stabalise at around 7 or 8. hell... would be better if it would just stabalise at all!
