It's my understanding that banks charge a hefty fee to exchange US money. And the kiosks on the street sometimes slip foreigners bogus money in addition to not a good exchange rate.
Would it make sense to Western Union myself some money? That way I can just go to a Western Union in Ukraine and pick up my cash. I'd just wire it before I headed on the plane and pick it up in Ukraine. Simple right?
Has anyone else done this? And what reputable place can I exchange money if this does not work.
I know the best thing to do is bring the crispiest newest bills. But how can I go about knowing that the money I receive is legit?
Ahhh just one of the many challenges of Ukraine.
Gotta love a country where the national anthem is "We are not dead yet!"
"The other option is to bring Traveller's Cheques, Thomas Cook and American Express are the common one. If you decide to bring the cheques, please make sure you save the immigration card they gave you on the plane flying into Ukraine, you are going to need this paper in the bank, bank needs to have a look at the exact days of your arrival. The banks usually charge 2% commission for the withdrawal using cheques". found it here : http://www.mordinson.com/gambling.html
In Ukraine there are currency exchange places everywhere and they charge less commission than one may be accustomed to. Most, if not all, of them have their exchange rates posted outside, just look at the rates each one offers and go for the best one.
why not just use an ATM? Western Union will also charge you a fee to send the money and their exchange rates are probably the same as the local banks if not worse.
I send myself money in Ukraine all the time. I tell myself sweet nothings and proclaim love too soon in my relationship. Then I tell myself I was in an accident and need cash quickly.
batman... nice! but did you ever arrange to meet yourself at the airport and just not turn up? now that would be a bummer!
agreed... just go to an atm! i did have some fun at an atm a few days ago here. it didn't give me any money, but claimed it did so i had to phone the bank the next day. no scam though, just faulty atm, as mastercard agreed that it hadn't given out any cash...
i had some money sent to me via wu in the summer and wu managed to screw up. took us about 4 hours to actually get the cash in the end and cost far more than just using an atm...
atm works just fine my bank charges about $1 for the exchange and atm fee. there is a place at the airport to change money of you need to. and you need cash with no writing or marks on it.
Any time I go I take money in my pocket. Dollars and euros. I exchange it at any post office in UK and they charge zero commision.
I only ever needed to make a withdrawal the first time I went to pay apartment in cash. For that I went into the local bank and made and phone call to my own bank. I was able to do this as I had telephone banking at the time. I did the normal security checks to a bank operator in UK and the money was there when I put the phone down. I believe this cost me zero as well, since I was basically making a telephone banking transaction which would not normally cost me anything....free banking. I made this transaction from my private account...not credit card.
