Can anyone see any problems with thia regarding security etc.
I send money occasionally so my partner can book holidays for us as it works out cheaper usually.
I also send money for birthdays and other things sometimes.
I have known her 2 years and visited 7 times.
I don't like inconvenienece and costs of using Western Union or Moneygram.
I though I would open a bank account in uk and give her a debit card on our next meeting to draw money out using ATM machines. The card would obviously have my name and signature on it.
I would just put money in the account as and when required.
I am concerned about any security issues by doing this.
No need for anyone telling me If I don't have 100% trust I should'nt be with her. I'm a realist
and know things can change and if if we have a big fall out she has a card with my name and signature on it and also knows my home address.
We have never had any real problems so far in our relationship but I just would rather be safe than sorry.
I can't see any problems doing this but maybe the someone more financial savvy can spot any flaws.
Hey, Jin. I looked into doing the same thing. I asked my bank to set me up with another account for that purpose. It was because I told them the purpose that they would not let me do it. An ATM card also has a line of credit. They say they have had problems with ex-wives taking all of the money and line of credit. When that happens, the bank is blameless, but is blamed. I asked them to take out the line of credit just for this account and they still would not do it.
On my second visit to Ukraine, the total fees for using an ATM for the bank I was using and my bank was $7.50 USD per transaction. On this last trip, it was $10.00 USD. Moneygram is $9.85 at Walmart. That would be my second choice as wire transfers to her bank at Washington Mutual, my current bank are free. That is what I use.
Still, Privat Bank, her bank took 1% when she went to withdraw it. The first time I tried this, she got $5.00 USD less for some reason. Washington Mutual advertises free wire transfers, so I believe it is her bank that took the $5.00. I still have to look into why the $5.00.
check the card works in Ukraine. I know when the Uk introduced chip and pin the card wouldn't work in the ATMS in moldova...you had to go into the bank and get the money manually with a passport. But they have updated the ATMs and chip and pin cards work in some ATMs. Probably it would be ok for Ukraine. Better to use an off shore bank with your own off shore company but unless you have business its not worth the 1000 odd pounds to setup.
The other thing is with the UK use a bank your not banking with currently as if they see transactions from Ukraine they may block the card thinking it was stolen. You have to tell them your'll be in Ukraine during this time and not block the card. If its with a bank your with now it maybe hard to explain how you could be in two places at once. AND banks in the UK will always let you go overdrawn so they can fine you when your in overdraft. The girl is probably going to try her luck. The fine is normally 25-50 pounds. But you can tell them make the overdraft limit 0 so you can never be overdrawn, they will say they can't but they can, they might then say because you do this it will affect your credit rating as this is not normal for a bank to give someone a 0 limit. Its B*llSh*t they just try to extract fees from you whenever they can.
I opened a halifax account for the wife when she was here, I can transfer money directly into it online from my own account which credits immediately, and the exchange rate is good and of course Halifax have no bank charges. To open a account now a days is not so easy we used for Id pps number(or national insurance number in the uk)which came in a letter and addressed to her.
A idea maybe would be to open a account in your name a simple savings account in a different bank (maybe even Halifax) and give her the pin and card then you just deposit when you want and if there is a real problem just go in and close the account. It wouldnt be linked to your own main account. You gain the advantage of not having to pay crazy western union rates and bad rates of exchange.
Ben,
I have used my card at atms near where she lives, not all atms or bankomats seem to work even though they have the maestro sign though, so I would think she would find one that would work ok.
Colin,
That's exactly what I was intending to do but probably didn't explain it very well. It seems a good idea and can't really see nay problems. All this publicity about id theft etc can make you a bit paranoid though.
Jin
It depends what bank you are with.
The Nationwide flex account is best for this, because you pay no bank charges for using their card anywhere in the world, even for small withdrawels.
I was on the verge of doing something similar so I have already asked them. They can open another account for you linked to your main account, you can then DD money in to it. The card can even be in your girls own name. The only draw back is that it will have a £300 daily limit! which isnt really a bad thing.
When my Russian wife left (divorce) to go home in 2007 I opened a savings account and got a debit card for her. I put money in the account the first of each month, she was able to use the debit card to withdraw funds for six months (when I closed the account) it was easy and she had a monthly income during the time she was re-establishing herself back in Russia. Was very simple and painless to do... other than the divorce... I still remember all the American men that would stop and turn around to look at her walk. She had that certain "sway" to her hips that only the FSU and Russian women have perfected... I miss it.
Sorry to hear that, Coop. People give me advice all the time, I listen, but I am a stubborn bull. You must give us your words of wisdom on what to do and what not to do.
"I still remember all the American men that would stop and turn around to look at her walk. She had that certain "sway" to her hips that only the FSU and Russian women have perfected... I miss it. "
Coop....based on your exploits on your last FSU trip, I wonder if you really did miss it??? ;-))
Ha! Ha!
Beemer… I miss the walk, not the woman! A new adventure waits for me... I embrace change and I have reconciled that I was not meant to be monogamous. Beemer let's go to that adults club in the islands you told me about. It would be fun!
Raging Bull… too many stupid people here (not you, you’re an OK guy) taking pot shots at anything they can to offer my personal life. I will leave you with some advice... “Leave no meat on the chicken” if you know what I mean! Once I make love to them they don’t need it again. <smile>
