Hello,
I am visiting Kiev in about months time & want to confirm if I can take 2 laptops with me in my luggage??? One for me and one for the person I am visiting(new one). Please tell me what precautions I should take to get the new laptop through the airport at Kiev??? Any suggestion appreciated. If its a bad idea than I can buy a crap laptop from Kiev instead?
Beemer will laugh at this, but I wouldn't bring two laptops. Why not just bring one laptop, you both use it over there and leave it with her. If you do bring two laptops, make up a story that they are both yours and not one for a gift. I cannot find anywhere where it is written that there is a gift tax, but if there is, you might get taxed.
In any case, I bought a brand new laptop at Foxtrot in Kiev for $796 USD for my gf. It was on sale.
I don't see why it would be a problem. I've carried my laptop back and forth many times and no one has even noticed that I have it.
Just don't declare the second one as a gift. Take it out of the packaging and put it in a regular laptop case or bag so it doesn't look brand new. I can't imagine anyone will ask about it, but if they do just say that one is for business and the other is for personal use or something.
I saw laptops on special on my last strip to Kiev at a big electronics store. They were a current model, in retail boxes and stacked up in a dsplay on a pallet on the floor - at "3999 grievna". At 8 grievna to the dollar thats just $500 bucks. With prices like that (and since they had Ukrainian or Russian version operating systems already installed) why bring one from home?
(No, I didn't buy one for my lady. But if I had wanted to give her a notebook - I would have.)
im sure u could get 2 laptops into one large laptop bag
u guys are all crazy I wouldnt buy no gf or woman i was meeting a laptop
u are just buying her off
ragingbull mentioned that he gave one to his "gf" (girlfriend). Not someone he just met.
And so far in this lifetime I've given exactly one laptop (which cost me around $500) to one girlfriend - and that was after I had known her for a year and a half.
Would NEVER buy anything like that for a girl I was just meeting.
Thanks a lot for your advice everyone, I really appreciate it. I think I will take only the new laptop for her!!! I don't know why some of you are discouraging me to bring a laptop for her. Yes I am serious with her, and if possible I would like to bribe her into me. I don't think I could just visit her all the way from Canada like touch and go and not give her somthing back. I don't know about you guys, but I am the kind of person who likes to show affection. If I know she is poor like as described in the agency as most girls are, than better for me, I will go all the way. Its really up to her to just to accept me right now!!! LOOK I am already spending 3K on the trip so why not another $500 for a cheap new laptop from Canada? I will just have to remind her not to create a accounts on other website for dating!!!
id be happy to give a laptop for 500 thats now 2 much for maybe christmas or something like that.
As i mentoined in a earlier post I had 2 new ones here when she was going home she wanted to bring one I said no.
Shaz
I think you should do as Jet says
Get there first. They are great buying there with "their" language software installed etc
Who knows - it could save you bring 2 home ????
Touch base with her and find out if she needs a cryllic keyboard, if so you would be better off buying it in Ukraine. And another point about buying it in Ukraine is, think of her excitement when you and her go on a shopping trip for a laptop... they do like shopping!

My sentiments exactly, Shaz444. Many times it is fear that it might go wrong with the relationship that ruins it.
I took home a used cyrillic capable keyboard home once. It worked a little. There were some problems with it. Perhaps it needed the driver disk. You can attach a cyrillic keyboard to the laptop, can't you?
Oh yes. If you buy a computer there, make sure they give you a rescue disk. I bought several computers here in the US and they always gave me a rescue disk. I took it for granted in Ukraine, and they didn't give me one. The computer went down a month later. A friend of hers re-inserted Windows. The computer is alright now.
shaz, the greatest gift you could give her is yourself. if you don't think thats enough then read some self help books.
if someone came 3000 miles to see you, wouldn't you LOVE HER TO DEATH. think about it.
We shouldn't NEED self-help books to give us some authors opinion of how we should REALLY feel. Feelings should come pretty much automatically without the aid of printed words.
And if you are concerend with fellow forum member's EGOs, you needn't be.
Just look at danny (now "wife_buyer"). All that guy HAS is a fantasy high opinion of himself. He doesn't need any more pop-psychology to prop it up.
you shouldn't have any problems with 2 laptops, you are allowed to bring in up to 2 as far as i know. (not sure where i read only 2 though...)
but right now you can buy a laptop for less than 2000grv here. so with the current exchange rates you're probably best off buying one here.
plus i still can't find any decent cyrillic stickers for my keyboard (actually... any at all!) so i'm sure buying one here is best.
i don't even use my uk mobiles much because of the lack of cyrillic.
ah... plus - winblowz is going to be in english not rusky. just changing the language from "english - american" to "rusky" doesn't change the menus, etc.
What a great idea ! To bring a computer that is worth more than one month salary to someone you have never seen and that wrote nice letters to you only for that purpose...
Com'on, wake up ! (read my post : 'ukraine insider information')
I met an american who teaches english there, he knows how it works because some of those women are his students, so here is a gift to you :
- women are recruited thru ads in local newspapers, their JOB is to write letters so men read them, pay for them (or for a subscription), buy flowers (which they don't buy, they just use plastic flowers for the picture and split the money), go to meetings with a translator etc
- women under 25 are NOT the ones who are looking for a foreigner, they are beautiful and all have local boyfriends, they like to hang around with their friends, and do NOT dream about foreigners or leaving their country ...
- tourists are cash cow that everybody milks since their first step in the country : ultra expensive taxi, extra deserts in restaurants, requests for presents
- the agencies PAY for their beautiful pictures, the photosopping, the clothes ... it is all a big LIE
- the usual excuse for not showing up : 'I am sick', 'my mom is sick', 'I am busy' (although she told you to come and knows you are available all day) ...
- local people LAUGH AT THOSE WOMEN who work for dating agencies, and they will probably choke from laughter when they see waiting with your flowers and she does not show up
WAKE UP, you felt in love with a picture ...
I am sure you are going to react negatively to my reply, think that it is MY story, because, hey, you are ready 'to go all the way' (into the scam, head first), and that you are serious about this (but all she is probably serious about is ONLY your money).
MONEY HAS NEVER BOUGH LOVE, it must come only after love has been there for a long time.
If you show up as a provider, love will never come, it will be only in your mind.
Please tell us how your trip has been, what you got and how much you spent !
