Hello all! I am making my first trip to Kiev. I will be flying in on the 7th of next month and staying until the 14th. I have been talking to somebody for quite some time ( talked on the phone, emails, ect) and I have decided that I want to take a jump across the pond to see her, if anything else have a fun vacation. I am staying in an apartment for 110 US Dollars, per night. The pictures look very nice and modern. I have a few questions and would like some feedback from some of the members here that have been to Kiev and know the "ins and outs" of this city.
1. How much money should I bring? I live a decent life in the US, and typically spend 100 a night if I go out for drinks or something inthe US.
2. Are the Ukrainian people trustworthy. The lady with the travel agency speaks good english and I have emailed her and spoken with her on the phone.
3. Customs, will they give me any problems? I am going to bring my lap top and digital camera.
4. What should I expect? She is sincere. Dont get me wrong, she is gorgeous, but not one of the young model types. I havent been able to find her name on any scammer list. Do the Ukrainian men give you any problems going over there and having your way with their women and packing up and leaving? I thank all those who submit feedback!
$100.00 per night is enough money, if don't take her to the expensive dinners otherwise it will cost you an additional $100.00
The Ukrainian people live with lies and deceit, do not trust anything they tell you... their not bad people it's their culture.
Customs will be a breeze.
If you get bored and want to see the best that Kiev has to offer take a trip to the "Riverboat" some night You will be blown away with the class and beauty of the amature prostitutes there.
Na! the Ukraine men don't care much, only if you cause problems between them and their mothers who they live with inbetween the girlfriends.
Enjoy your self and spend some money to support the economy of Ukraine!
VNV, that is not the case here. I was simply asking if the men in Ukraine assumed that is what was going on. I am not into flying across the globe to hit it and get it. I could do that here in my home town for FREE! Get your facts straight before you open that ignorant mouth of yours. I take it you have been mugged and scammed. Sorry about your luck.
LOL, yes you are right, I am ignorant. You are making your first trip to Kiev and I live in Ukraine and have my own business here. I obviously know nothing about Ukraine.
Nflorian26: Don’t bother taking cash, ATMs are plentiful. I’ve tended to budget around $250 USD per day when travelling over the years including accommodation. Certainly it costs me/us much less when staying with family in Russia and there are times you’ll spend plenty more, but it is a fair guide. As for what the local boys think, mostly they couldn’t give a toss because they’ve had first pick of the crop long before you came on the scene anyway.
Trustworthiness is relative and subjective. By comparison to expected standards in USA, based on my experience, your answer is no for the most part. Unfortunately many pass this off as the good old “Cultural Difference”. I disagree. A thief is a thief, a liar is a liar, a whore is a whore and a big noting slob is a big noting slob regardless of country of origin. The issue you need to work through is that relative economic disadvantage over the years has created a higher percentage of women who are quite prepared and happy to drain your balls over and over for the sake of draining your wallet and will do the very same thing with the next punter who trucks in about 5 minutes after you leave.
Expect 50% or less of what you imagine the agency will or should provide and you won’t be too disappointed. Expect to be making several more trips if the lady is nice. Expect to spend a lot of money if she is not. Expect to reflect later and feel, in some form or another that you have been bent double and had a Uki slong shoved where the sun doesn’t shine. Whether in cash or in kind, you’ll be shafted to some extent somewhere along the way (Yes, I can hear you thinking, I’ll be smart, this won’t happen. Believe me, you are not that smart and it will happen). This basically goes with the territory of being first time around in a developing country without native language or knowledge.
If he's just starting out, he should be prepared to spend thousands and thousands of dollars over a few years...just to see IF there is a relationship of any kind. The women there are not going to leave their country. Simple is that. I wish him luck because he'll need it.
'The Ukrainian people live with lies and deceit, do not trust anything they tell you...' As a Ukrainian who have never been to the USA I would like ask you – is it true that every American is fat and dumb? It is clear that my question is as stupid as MiniCooper's statement.
'Na! the Ukraine men don't care much, only if you cause problems between them and their mothers who they live with inbetween the girlfriends.' The same as previous one.
This weekend I met a guy from the USA. We met each other on this site and several days ago he came to Kyiv in business. We met, I showed him the city and at night we went to one club. We met two pretty girls there, danced with them and took their phone numbers. He is going to meet one of them during this week. This guy was a nice gentle man, he did not mind of dating but he had not a purpose to pick up a girl for a night. We both and the girls had good time.
In clubs be ware of scammers (specially in the downtown as foreigners go there as usual). Keep always near 400-500 UAH of cash. Security measures are the same as anywhere else.
Nflorian26,
so you can get plenty of women for free in your country? you just prefer to spend thousands of dollars to a country whose one goal is to extort money from your wallet? where you will probably not have more than a 2nd grade conversation with a girl? and you can get plenty of women for free in your own country? REALLY? because i thought the point was that we can't get women like this in our own country.
you ask questions like you've never traveled before. here is the best advice i could give someone in that situation, don't try to make friends or talk with strange men on the street. don't ever pull out a wad of 100s from your pocket. and don't pick up any money on the street.
nobody is your friend there and everybody gets a laugh when you walk back to the airport with your tail between your legs. in my estimation, probably $100, 000 is spent in ukraine for every hot chick that leaves the country. this is why nobody cares.
"The pictures look very nice and modern." Its standard practice to switch the apartment for a lower grade one at the last minute, in fact they will usually just take you to the downgraded apartment without telling you knowing that as a first time visitor especially you'l be too intimidated to complain. Email this travel agent of yours and tell them that you know this goes on and that you wont put up with it.
For $100 at such an off peak time especially with these economic conditions you expect a superb apartment right in the centre especially for a relatively long stay like that. Have a look at www.kievapts.com - and see what you should be getting for $100. They are very cheap and efficient for airport transfers too I highly recommend this company by the way as they are american owned and a friend of mine who lives in Ukraine knows the owner, oh and they are open to haggling on the price a bit usually as well ... in fact you could just contact them, say what your current deal is, and then say you'd be prepared to switch if they made you a sufficiently tempting counter offer.
Customs shouldn't be any problem so long as everything is "used" i.e. not blatantly packed in its original box or something. Wear an expression on your face like your not going to take shit from anyone and generally speaking you wont have to, go there looking like a victim as our friend nooga (do a search) did and you be paying $80 to a policeman to " be your mate and look after you" while your there. But then this is a guy who found Odessa of all places to be intimidating :-).
Oh and since your american, please please please do not turn up in Ukraine wearing white "sneakers" jeans and a baseball cap, I've seen girls over there actually point and giggle with each other over such a spectacle. Wear some smart casual or mid range designer clothes favouring darker colours.
Now for the bad news - the odds of the first girl you visit being "the one" are vanishingly small, and yes we've all been there are thought that its going to be different for us, but the statistics aren't on your side, you only have to read this forum for a little while to realise that. But since your committed to going I'll give you some tips:
* trust your instincts about whether this girl is really into you or not, don't put coldness on her part down to cultural differences or nerves, she's not from another planet, although culturally they are a little less overtly affectionate especially to start with.
* if you find yourself in the vicinity of the designer boutiques then you know you've got a "shopper" on your hands and the deal is gifts for sex.
Hello. I am new and I will be very glad to take part into discussions. : ) I am from Ukraine, Nikolaev.
I can say for sure that 100 a night will be enough. Also I would recommend thinking about some presents for your girl. So you should take enough money for it.
Then you will eat the whole day and you will need money for it too.
The Ukrainian people are trustworthy, but it depends not on the nationality, but on the person itself. Behave yourself as you behave in your native city.
I think that you will have no problems with the customs.
Nathan, first thing that you should expect is that it is a real meeting and you nervous either she does. People meet, people part. If it is your fate, then you will be with her.
Hi Nathan. I have visited their four times. If your staying in Kiev, then $110 is decent, but you could get down to about $60 for a clean apartment. $100 a night is a good range. It is advisable to stay close to this woman. Ukrainian people are very protective and if she is anything like my girlfriend, she will not want to you to talk a lot or go places alone. I would certainly avoid this. The economic status of the country now is very bad and people are getting desperate. I was just out there a few weeks ago and I can tell you that you must be careful. Do not exchange money in the airport. In fact, I would make sure that you take a little more than you estimate. Some of the banks there literaly run out of money and you cannot exchange. This should not be a problem if you are in Kiev. Many of the government officials are corrupt. Customs may give you a hard time. They will notice right away that you are an American and may ask to search your bag. Your personal electronics are not a problem, but if you declare a total of $200 for gifts, they will charge you 44% of the total value and you will have to pay in cash right there in the airport. I would avoid talking to police as well and this was on the advice of my girlfriend and her family. If you travel to a village, it is highly likely the entire village will not have plumbing and the only place to go is outside. I have not have much of a problem with Ukrainian men, and in fact, the ones I know (members of my girlfriends family) are really great people and they are all very interested about life in America. Many times my girlfriend would bring members of her family or friends with us on dates. This is something a lot of them do. Reputation is a big deal out there and they do not want to be see by any of their neighbors or friends as loose. I would recommend going to a sauna there. This is a big part of their culture and it was a great experience. Let me know if you want any more information.
