Having problems sending a gift to the Ukraine and not sure of how to do it?
read and learn from my own experiences, and welcome to rip off Ukraine!
Tried to send a gift to my girl friend for christmas, a mobile phone second hand, used for about 30mins and clothes new, the total value about £200.
Paid Fed X £48 to send great i thought, took 3-4 days to get to Kiev arrived at customs and then waited 22 days for them to get of there curupt Ukrainian asses to tell my girl that there were taxes to be paid, would not say the amount but was more than£50!! & she would have to pay them.
For heaven sake its a gift!
Had the said package returned to me with all the unnecessary hassle that goes along with that, and the stupid scams that the Ukraine customs can throw at you!
What do i do now?
In the passed i had used DHL so decided to try them again!
Maybe they have made the necessary payments i thought to the powers that be-!!
So the package was re wrapped and sent, 1 day to get to Kiev, great i thought, WRONG!
This time 4 days in customs and only one phone call from me to DHL to give them a kick up the ass!
I insured the package this time for £500 just incase it went walk about, BIG MISTAKE!
Girl friend is rang by customs, and told they want her to pay 35% duty plus VAT about £250!! On birthday, Christmas gifts!
Sorry but that is a rip off!
So now have the hassle of getting it back to the UK, customs have said they will destroy the goods if i dont have it sent back!!!
Yes i reckon they will do that!
Where do they get these figures from?i think they make them up as they go along! Welcome to rip off bent Ukraine!
So the moral is dont send anything! or write on the package that it is worth a small figure and take the chance it wont get nicked in transit and pay the duty on the amount which you have stated its value to be?
Or maybe i am wrong?
I've been ordering some stuff from ebay, IT stuff, mobile phone, business card holders etc, coming from China and/or Hong Kong, all subject to UK import tax should they decide to inspect it, makes no difference if you send a commercial product or a gift to Ukraine, an import is an import thus subject to tax.
Martin, the last two paragraphs is from another thread. I have not found anything on the web regarding import tax, including the USPS. Is there a difference between Customs at the airport and Customs at the post office? I do believe Scooby has been scammed.

It will be no problem to bring in two lap tops. On three occassions I brought two leaving the second one for business associates.
You no longer have to declare laptops, camera's. Mostly they want to know how much money you are bringing in.
There is a difference if something is slung over one's shoulder, or packed in their suitcase (minus it's original packaging) to sending stuff by courier.
Using UK as an example we have 15% tax on such things bought in the shops, bringing stuff in from overseas we are 'robbing' the government of their 15% so why should they not charge 15% duty on such things bought in?
It's the same as at an airport, why do you think they have restrictions on tobacco, alcohol, perfumes, general goods etc? Because the government of that country want to revenue their taxes!
Anyone can walk in with a laptop or two, I could provide one of my business cards explaining they are for my work, nobody checks, when leaving the country again, if one still has the two laptops, that's a loophole, a perk, but it's a case of not declaring an import to the country which is wrong on the part of the individual.
I once sent some soccer kit to Ukraine for a friend, I had bought it, online in UK, with her credit card and because it was being shipped directly from the retailer to Ukraine it was exempt from UK VAT. It arrives in Ukraine and they want their import tax, how can that be wrong, I'd got away without paying tax in UK so Ukraine want it instead!
Martin, my point is if there such a tax, it should be on the Ukraine Customs Website. Charge a tax, pay it, that's fine. But, it is absolutely strange to me that a country would charge such a tax without warning. Is it really a tax or a Customs scam?
There was a time when this tax was posted on the Ukraine Customs Website. It is no longer there. Did they omit it intentionally to trap unwitting victims? Is it no longer there and Customs officials are just scamming people? Or is it there, but I have not looked in the right place?
Ukraine is corrupt, I know that, when I sent the Manchester United football kit, something that can simply not be bought in Ukraine, you can just imagine the $$$ signs rolling in the customs guy eyes.
Fair enough, there was a tax due, but they came up with all sorts of nonsense, that the recipient must travel from Zaporozhye to Kiev to complete all sorts of paperwork, pay more monies that the kit was worth etc. etc. etc.
I was having quite a banter with the UPS guy in UK that I was dealing with, I educated him somewhat regarding the corruption in Ukraine, and after a few days of this nonsense of huge and ridiculous demands I told him 'phuck it, cancel the shipment, return to sender'.
UPS called me back the next day to report that Ukraine customs had now, suddenly, released the shipment for delivery to the recipient who had to pay a modest import tax (only), none of the other nonsense.
It's the same as I've experienced with their airport police, one day they were going to allow me to miss my flight until I paid their $20 fine (bribe). Eventually I told them that if they want to arrest me then arrest me but until you do I'm getting on that flight, I walked away, they still tried to call me back, I just ignored them and eventually they came over to me and returned to me the item they had confiscated until I had paid the fine (bribe).
Just stand up to them, they will try all tricks for a dollar or few, stand firm, if you know you are in the right, and once they realise that they will not get their dollar(s) they back down.
Import taxes in to Ukraine should be published somewhere but where that is I have no idea.
I have spent hours trying to find the "Official"amount the Ukraine customs should charge for import duty, cannot find it anywhere.
This is a country that has been granted to host the european football championships, they are going to make a right mess of that, if they cannot even sort something as simple as this out!
God help all the football fans!
Back to the point, i have a phone number for the customs in Kiev where the package is held so i am going to try and talk to them about this scam!!
If the package is "LOST" then i am quids in as the item is insured and i will claim, maybe that would be a far easier option?
But not quite honest! maybe i lower my standards to theres?
It all makes me if getting involved with a Ukraina women is worth it! as this is just the tip of the ice berg.
RB, when you become fluent in russian, then I'll believe there is nothing in the ukraine website regarding import taxes. To really check out site well, you need to know the language, you are reading an english version. Ukraine is NOT the USA, your mentality is that things should be done as the USA does and they are not in ukraine. You don't know or I don't know the laws of that country, I base mine on what the person in front of me says, ie: customs official...and I may add, I tell them what others have told me which HAS been consistent..up to $200 in gifts brought in and max of $3000 cash for not filling out forms. I do know of one guy that was hassled about bringing in 2 laptops, it cost him having all his luggage checked. Can you imagine if he brought lots of gifts with him. There is a law I know of that if you try to bring in over amount allowed in and did not fill out customs forms...you are in big trouble, hefty fines and a long delay in airport.
I laugh when some guys say here "it is a breeze through customs"...well how would like to be the unfortunate guy that just happened to be picked for a search.....
I do agree some officals are there for bribes.
If customs in Kiev are holding it then it is a scam, there is little, if any, point in you telephoning them because they will view it that you are playing in to their hands.
The correct procedure, for courier deliveries, is that customs may assess the import tax due, from any enclosed/attached receipts and/or courier paperwork, they release it for delivery to the recipient and the recipient will need to pay the import tax, if the recipient declines then the shipment is returned. Unless it is something illegal customs at the point of entry in to the country should never siexe it.
You may telephone customs in Kiev, I doubt you'll get anywhere, and if you don't get anywhere then tell the courier company to cancel the shipment and return to sender. The courier undertook a contract to deliver the shipment, whilst it may be due to circumstances beyond their control they have failed to make delivery, thus have it returned.
I'd like to bet you that soon after you cancel the shipments Kiev customs will, suddenly, release it however the recipient shall need to pay the import tax upon delivery.
OK, I finally found the place where they say they will tax items worth over 200 E. I looked at the same place last month when Beemer and I were arguing, but it wasn't there. I stand corrected, Beemer. I suppose it's because everything were not in their original packaging that they didn't give me a hard time. Martin says that's wrong and I tend to agree with him.
I've been through there three times and the Customs Declaration form was not even shown or presented to me on the way in. They were, however available on counters at departure. The only time there might have been a question was my first time. The lady asked me how much in goods I was bringing in. I said about $200 (note that this is less than 200 E). She became wide eyed, and asked me what they were. I told her. She acted like she did not want to mess with me and said, OK. The second and third time, my baggage just went to the X-Ray and nothing else was said.
Borispol is easy but be very careful arriving internationally in to one of the regional airports, every suitcase goes thru the xray and they've even confiscated an aerosol of deodorant from me previously.
Martin, aerosol cans are absolutely banned on all flights because they might explode. Flight personnel gets touchy when they see that on baggage, coming and going. That's not just in Ukraine.
I've worked in the airline/aviation industry for 30 years so I know the rules.
Sure, if one has a suitcase full of aerosols then something is amiss, something like shaving foam is non flamable thus doesn't count, but you try telling a woman, going on perhaps a one month holiday, that she can only take her deodorant or hairspray, not both, and then perhaps only enough for one week or so of a one month holiday.
I had gone for a long week in a Ukrainian summer, I had taken 2 full aerosols of deodorant UK-KBP then KBP-DNK with no problem, a week (ish) later I had one full, and one lierally empty, and DNK (Dnepropetrovsk) airport police tell me it is illegal to carry, what a load of bollox, they simply wanted my aerosol of deodorant thus I ensured that I emptied the near empty one before handing it over to them.
