My fiance will be migrating to Australia in just a few months. She is beginning to work out what she will bring, and what she will leave at her mother's. I don't expect she will bring a huge amount -- clothes, books, photos, lots of momentous etc, but I know they will not fit in her suitcase! So what options are there for shipping/sending personal belonging from the FSU states to Down Under? And what would it cost? Cheers.
Find an international courier company, preferably not one of the well known names, find an international courier local to your area, try for surface, rather than air, shipping, and by that means ship the less important stuff that she can wait a few weeks etc. for.
Pack as much into bags as you can. If you are a frequent flyer you will get extra baggage allowance and if you upgrade or fly business you will get more. Send the rest by DHL. Digitise the photos print them out in Aussie.
Its very expensive and difficult process for her to go through, to freight over from Ukraine.
Tell her to use one of those synthetic bags (stripped colourer ones with zip on top approx 8-15grv at markets – weigh only a few grams) Pack breakables inside cloths in centre and should get away with 22kg’s. You be surprised as to what you will get into them. Plastic wrap at departure airport – cost 50grv.
He can arrange it in Oz, find a courier with representation in his local area, call them and say 'I want a pick-up from XYZ address in Ukraine'.
If thinking of airline excess baggage, regardless of the inflated charges, please bear in mind it is carried on a weight available basis, aircraft to Oz carry very much fuel thus they cannot carry maximum payload as well as the fuel, well not at the same time anyway. :)
