First post here, so hello to everyone. been lurking here for a while but I have some questions of my own I was hoping I could get some assistance with.
I am planning on staying in Ukraine, I think Kiev but possibly Odessa or Crimea.
For how long I am not sure, but was thinking about a month. I work remotely so I have to factor in that I will be working a lot of the time while I am there.
I'd like some opinions and suggestions for the following:
1) What is the best time of year to go temperature-wise? I don't want to be there when it is snowing but also not when it is really hot either. 70s-90s Fahrenheit would be ideal.
2) Best time of year for nightlife?
3) Do the local women go out every night of the week as they do here in the US? Or is this a weekend thing only?
4) Am I a target for crime if I am out wondering about on my own? I plan on dressing business casual and not really speaking with anyone on the streets if I don't have to. But in the bars and clubs of course I'll try to be meeting women. I assume it is like everywhere else and there are bad parts of town and good parts, but I also know the economy is suffering right now and have no accurate representations of how bad crime has gotten as a result.
5) Are there any specific areas that English speakers frequent?
6) What should I expect to pay a translator for the month/day/hour?
&) What happens if I pick up the plastic bag full of money on the street that I am reading about? I wont do it but I am curious as to what the deal is there... :)
1) I like April and May. In two or three weeks there will not be any snow. In the end of May and beginning of June the average temperature is 18-24 Celsius.
2) Every day from 10 p.m. :)
3) Most of decent ones who are over 30 years old are married. So…
4) Yes, as I am or any one else. Am I a target if I am out in New York in Bronx after midnight?
---I assume it is like everywhere else and there are bad parts of town and good parts, but I also know the economy is suffering right now and have no accurate representations of how bad crime has gotten as a result.--- Here you are absolutely right. There are bad and good parts. And do not walk along at night.
5) Yes. The down town and bars, pubs, clubs, etc there.
6) I made such a research several weeks ago for one American guy. I do not remember exactly but the average payment was 16 USD/hour. I may be wrong. Find his thread on this forum.
8) A guy will come to you and say that the bag is his. Then another one will come. They will be talking fast and disputing. Then they will go and you will find that you lost you wallet, cell phone, watch, etc. It does not matter whether you are a foreigner or native one. They tried to scam me too:) But I just passed them by saying nothing, though I did not know that it was a scam trick. Now I would call the police. They wanted to scam me during my lunch time!
Greatings yourusername.
There are more experienced guys here and some guys who live there I'm sure will help you.
Here is my tuppence worth.
1) Don't remember much about farenheit since school days. but I know 30°C is too damn hot and that's what it gets to there in summer. End of may to end of Aug. Winters very cold.
2) Summer except in Kiev where it's all year round
3) What kind of women go out every day of the week?
4) You are a target for crime in any place in the world if you go around with your eyes closed. Do what you do in your home town.
5) In the sticks...little English...in the cities usually English is
6) Don't know the going rate...never used one...variable I suppose
&) The plastic bag in the street is too convuluted to explain here. Trust your insincts. This type of scenario happens not just in fsu. Google is your friend type in "street scams" and you'll get the picture.
1) Best time from last week of April through mid July. Second best choice second week of September through first week of October.
2) Almost always.
Greatest time would be weekends, holidays. The nightlife from about December 23rd through January 8th is nightly and festive.
3) Mostly weekends, lot of ladies like Thursday and Sundays. Some clubs have Wedneday ladies night that draw well. Middle of week is usually the slowest.
4) If you stay in the center of the center you are usually fairly safe.
5) Yes.
6) Which city? Kiev, Odessa, Crimea. The price will vary with Kiev the highest, Crimea the lessser price.
7) Been dying to have it happen to me, never has. If it does I'm going to say "I think we should call the police" and then begin to look around and say loudly POLICE.
Definitely watch your wallet. I got my pocket picked in the subway in Kiev. It was crowded. I remember being pushed from behind. Although I kept my wallet and my digital camera in my front pocket, they were both gone by the time I was going up the escalator. I should have kept my hands on them.
1) What is the best time of year to go temperature-wise? I don't want to be there when it is snowing but also not when it is really hot either. 70s-90s Fahrenheit would be ideal.
As others have said, spring is nice. Summer can be very hot and humid.
2) Best time of year for nightlife?
In Odessa, the nightlife is nice in summer, because the clubs are outdoors near the beach. But really, people party year-round here.
3) Do the local women go out every night of the week as they do here in the US? Or is this a weekend thing only?
Girls go out all the time here. In Odessa, Captain Morgan is always packed with girls on Monday nights.
4) Am I a target for crime if I am out wondering about on my own?
In Odessa, you'll probably be OK unless you are really drunk or doing something really stupid.
5) Are there any specific areas that English speakers frequent?
In Odessa, the Irish Pub, and Steakhouse restaurants, and more generally in the center there are always lots of foreigners.
Are you planning to meet girls on your own in clubs and bars? If you don't speak Russian, I think you're going to have a hard time. I know, someone will come on here and say that everyone speaks English, but that's not been my experience. Most girls will speak a few words of English, but most that I know are not interested in having a conversation in a nightclub in English with a foreigner.
@VNVnation-
Yep I was planning on going out to the clubs and bars and "trying" to see who I could meet that spoke English. Also toyed with the idea of dragging a translator out with me to help.
Perhaps there is a better idea like going to an agency when I get there? I was thinking of booking something from here like the service offered here:
http://www.delphania.com/
They claim they will schedule meetings with 15 women but I am thinking its probably best to wait until I get there to book something like that.
I also read a post in here about a translator that walked around with a guy like me and they went to the university and parks and whatever else and just approached random women on the street and i guess the guy eventually fond someone. LOL! Is it really that easy? I can't imagine doing something like that here in the US.
@Kirkland:
