While the issue of scamming is well publicised on this forum, we seem to go into any correspondence with a fine tooth comb. The basic rule of thumb is be cautious of anyone that asks for money. Everyone is different though, and you need to use your own judgement. A admit, I was scammed out of $50.00 by someone when I first started (for english lessons) now, I do not correspond with anyone who asks for money. I have heard though, that internet time in a cafe can be expensive vs. salaries, and maybe sending like 10-20 bucks a month isn't so bad. I do not know. Take some time, read through the threads of this board, both old and new, and set your criteria first, and do not deviate. My criteria is if they ask fo rmoney, drop correspondence. Many young English and American girls are not sophisticated enough to have the confidence to arrange that kind of stuff. Russian girls from the provinces have in some cases never even used a computer! Personally, I think it best to shy away from anyone who is sophisticated enough to do this stuff, etc? It seems to me that someone who has the knowledge to do this (and not own a computer themselves)is on a mission to get a visa. Perhaps I am talkin rubbish, just a thought though. Just how dedicated to learning to use messenger and email would you be if you did not own a computer or use one for work??
