fnp, what an interesting story! I want to add that the city you visited, Vinnitsa, is part of west Ukraine, which is known for its nationalistic people and disliking of Americans in particular. Have you seen many girls posting ads from Lvov or Ivanofrankisk for example? 90% of the girls are east and south of Kiev. In addition, before you leave for such a trip, you really need to do your homework. If you don't have time or appetite for some research, then it's much better to pay the premium and hire a professional service like fiance.com or similar to save you the trouble. What you could have done is the very simple rules for the independent traveler. Don't let someone else make arranegments for you unless you know that person well or is a professional. There are countless sites online, browse, find the one that appeals to you, email them and talk to them on the phone. Make sure you're comfortable and also have an alternative. Make sure you know what the rates they charge are before you leave your country. Make a pre-payment ALWAYS using credit card. If they take credit card, you know the chances they are legit are higher. Also, you have proof of the transaction and you can always go back to visa or american express and get your money back (which I have done in one of my trips to Ukraine). In my first trip, I was cautious that I did not accept to pay the balance in cash but only with credit card when I was in Ukraine. In my next trips and after I was more comfortable I always paid in cash (withdrawn from ATM in Ukraine) when I was in Ukraine because it saves you all the fees of the credit card bank. I have traveled to many poor thrid world countries and have gone way outside the big cities. I can tell you that in every poor counrty people will attempt to take you to a hotel, get you a cab, show you around, or find a woman for you and of course they will either charge you directly or they will stop by later to get a commission from the hotel, the cab, etc. It is very normal. You seem an inexperienced traveler and this can be evident to these people who may be poor but are very street smart. So, they saw you as a sack of dollars and they tried to milk you more than normal. Americans are considered stupid people with a lot of money in Ukraine and elsewhere. I met a girl in Sulawesi, Indonesia a few years ago. She was the cousin of my guide. She was earning money by weaving tableclothes and things like that. She wanted to come to America with me also. Her mother tried to sell me the most expensive piece they had in the store. I insisted I would buy a cheaper one. She replied "ooohhhh Americanoooo" like if you're American, you should throw your dollars around with no sense at all. In any event, you should have talked to Lyuba on the phone before you got on that plane, you should have verified her with a flower delivery. Don't just take anything for granted. If something's fishy, move one. Your story is sad, but don't get discouraged. Now, you have more experience and the second time you can do it right. There are women who are honest in Ukraine, there are some real diamonds that you cannot find anywhere else. Follow simple rules and common sense and you'll be fine the next time, but don't give up so easily. Bets of luck!
I want to add one more thing that is very important. It is the right thing to do as a gentleman to visit one girl instead of a bunch of girls during your trip to Ukraine. However, same thing as with your travel arrangements, HAVE ALTERNATIVES. Know 2-3 marriage agencies in town, contact them and make sure they can arrange meetings for you with alternative girls when you're in town in short notice. It's an expensive trip to Ukraine and it's a shame to waste it if something goes wrong with your girl.
fnp, regarding real diamonds, you have to search to find them, it's not easy, you need luck as well. My wife is from Kharkov, Ukraine. She's a real beauty, very young, she loves me and is a wonderful person and my best friend. Deanis also gave good recommendations about Kharkov and he's going to meet a girl for second time there in Christmas. Perhaps, it could be a good target city, but look elsewhere in Ukraine and Russia. Girls are in abundance and you will find many, but make sure you verify the ones you're planning to visit with a flower delivery (one flower or a few flowers for her + her picture with the flower sent to you). The service will verify her passport and will give you a quick report as well. Also, make sure you speak to her on the phone. If she doesn't speak a word of English, it's likely a waste of time. We all had our bad luck with women in Ukraine or elsewhere, you're not the only one. Tenacity will win you what you want in this game. And one more thing fnp, the word "no" is in everyone's dictionary. Reading your report I counted a double digit number of occasions when you should have said "no way"!
I can understand why he didn't say no, he was in a strange country, surrounded by strangers speaking a strange language. Either he felt obligated just not to lose teh little bit of communication offered, but also he doesn't know if the Vinnista Mob was gonna come after him. If I was in his position I would have been scared shitless, I would have said "anything you want, just don' thurt me!"
The reason I chose to live in Nataliya's home is that 1) there were not many people who could speak English in Vinnitsa and Nataliya could speak some English and looked helpful and decent at the beginning and might be a possible candidate for my future fiancee; 2) I really wanted to know what her life was and how average people lived in there to know her, her family and the society; 3) she did not look like a dangous girl and it should be safe to live in her home. It was near the date (one or two days) prior to my return to Kiev that I gradually found out her true color via things which I described on the web. I did not leave her home to find a hotel because 1) I already paid her $120 to take me to Kiev and show me around and at least I would have a guide, 2) in one or two days I would be leaving and what she wanted was just some money and some gifts. It was still considerated safe to live in her home rather than moving out to a new place(hotel) where I did not know anybody and could not communicate with people and potentially could be very dangous for me. How did you know the hotel people would not con me or even kill me for money and blackmarket my US passport for $5000? $5000 is a huge sum of money in Ukraine and I believe it could happen. What I lost was just some money. I now feel very lucky to come back safely, which is the most important to me. I hope this will answer your question.
Fnp, yes you are right. Thank goodness you are home safe, and a little cash is all you lost. I guess the lesson here is if you go to Vinnista, pack heat!
Hi,Chipscher,
Your experience seems to be really bad...
However, being born in the Ukraine myself,I'd like to reveal the actual reason for their dislike or whatever you may call it:
THEY MERELY ENVY YOU FOR BEING A FOREIGNER.
I'll never forget a comment from my former co-worker: YOU'RE LUCKY YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE TO FLEE...
Yours Dakladylover (thinker2004@land.ru)
Dak, it was not me who went, it was someone else. However, I am scared to go. I will not go unless I know the lady very well, via extensive e-mails, and many phone calls, after tht is only when I would consider going., only if I have someone I know I can trust. I feel very bad for the conditions over there, from what I understand the people there on average make in a month what I make in 2 hours. I do not blame them for disliking us, or trying to get some personal gain from us. Everyone is in it for themselves, and that is understandable. I am just one who wants to absolutly be cautios, and know and trust the person I would go to see. Ukranians, and people from FSU countries are not the only ones with attitude toward Americans, seems like most of the world has the attitude, yet, if they were given a free pass to immigrate to any country in the world, 95% would come here. Go figure.
Whilst I sympathise with fnp's misfortune on his visit to Ukraine, surely you must look at the broader view. Not every trip to the FSU is like that!!!
I have travelled to Ukraine on several occasions and the welcome I have received has been out of all proportion to the level poverty that exists there.
Yes there are bad trips....that I do not deny.....but that is the case with just about every country in the world,my own included(UK).
I am not trying to stir up a hornets nest here guys but lets be objective about things.
Hey Chip......I would come to the US.....given a free pass too,so I don't think you could say I am in the 5%,I was just saying that althogh fnp had a bad one that is by no means typical
