I’m off on another trip to Ukraine... leaving in 10 days. This time I’ll be picking up my girlfriend in Zaporozhye and then travelling on to Belete, Turkey to spend a week at the all-inclusive Spice Hotel and Spa on the Mediterranean. I’m worried because Turkey is 98.6 % Sunni Muslim. I did not want to go there (because of the Muslims) but when we were in Yalta three months ago I had promised her we would go some place warm on our next meeting. She wanted to see Turkey so off we go.
My question: Does anyone have any recent experience travelling to Turkey and if so how do they (Turks, Muslims) perceive Americans? Are there any safety issues to be concerned about?
Went to Crimea in March... for me it was not all it was cracked up to be, somewhat trashy place. We elected to go to a new (built 2007) resort this time with a private beach.
A recent poll of Turks showed that they hate Americans more than any other nationality.
It was a poll similar to those that showed Americans hate the French more than anyone else.
My girlfriend sent me photos of her recent trip to Turkey. It did not seem so great, all the
beaches were rocky. I am not familiar with Spice Hotel, perhaps it is better.
I haven't been to Turkey. It is a very popular vacation spot for people from Russia and Ukraine. But a lot of people visit the popular tourists areas from many countries, including the U.S.
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1046.html is the U.S. State Dept's country info page for Turkey.
As far as I am aware, there have not (yet) been attacks there that specifically targeted Americans. As a matter of course, when I travel I try not to call attention to myself as American, but rather to blend in (as well as I can) and keep a low profile.
If your staying at a resort chances are you won't meet many turks. But you will find the turks very welcoming of your american dollars. I'd be more worried if I was you of finding the resort full of Brits.
Was in Antalya twice last year, on business. Typically touristy, hotel and restaurant staff are polite, Russians and other FSU nationalities wherever one goes because of relaxed visa requirement, beer tastes like shite but so does American Budweiser :), bl00dy hot during July/August, just a typical European holiday resort country.
Hotel beer prices are often rip-off prices, and it tastes like shite, and the shops in immediate vicinity of hotels do not stock alcohol obviously in cahoots with the hotels!
Texasdude, I also noticed that some of the beaches were sand and pebble mixture, however I made sure our resort had a sandy beach.
durak, I have concealed my nationality at times also, when I'm asked I simply say "English".
ben2006, I have read many reviews about the poor manners of the Russian and German tourists, many of the reviews I read were written by Brits!
Smart Martin!, this is an all-inclusive resort, everything is free except the "top shelf" booze. I don't drink beer... only wine. I hope the wine offerings are palatable though! Yes, I see their temperatures are ramping up, it's been in the low 90's these past few days. I've been working on my tan so I don't get sunburn!
I have to smile about Turks and Americans. Last summer we were staying in the Intourist in yalta and they had a big breakfast buffet. One morning we wound up sharing a table with a couple Turkish gentlemen and the next couple days they made it a point to sit with us and we had good visits and were even invited to come stay with them on vacation (which we had no intentions of doing) The third day during the course of conversation one of them ask where I was from. After I told them I was from the USA neither of them said another word to us and found different seating in the days to follow. I must say we had a good laugh about it.
Perhaps because they're dyslexic and their parents were killed by an American drunk driver whilst their brother died under mysterious circumstances whilst mistress No.1 died in their arms whilst their kid thereafter died before birth whilst the dead kid's mother thereafter topped herself by jumping off a balcony!
let me ask you a question, do turks sit around and wonder what americans think of them?
i have spent a week in antalya. in the resorts, they are very courteous. who cares what they are saying behind our backs. I didn't go there to make friends.
i recommend the titanic hotel. its new and luxurious. and the food is excellent.
Well Gecko, I care what people think about Americans. If it's as bad as Oz says, then I would watch what they put in your food. I find very few foreigners unfriendly towards me although when I talk to them, they don't like America for its politics.
When I was in Antalya last August the company I was on business with enquired if I had been to the beach, I told they must be joking, the beach doesn't have air con :)
I need to get back down there but I think I'll leave it until late September or October!
gecko, I'll be staying at a resort in Belek called Spice Hotel & Spa Center it was built in 2007. My girlfriend wanted to stay there, I also looked at the Titanic it looked cool! I "hope" it's as nice as the Titanic was for you.
Mondelo, In March I met my girl in Yalta, Crimea... the weather was cold and rainy. I promised her that we would go to someplace warm when we met again. I know it will be hot but it will be fun anyway. Too late to change locations, I leave this coming Thursday.
Does anyone know if they have topless sunbathers at these resorts? Is it common practice for this to happen in Turkey?
