Last night, I was shopping in my neighborhood, and had a bunch of questions about something I want to get for my home. I was so focused on solving my problem, that I wasn't paying much attention to the petite blonde girl who was doing her best to help me.
I did sort of subliminally notice that she had a trace of accent, although her speech sounded 97% American, and this seemed unusual to me, because she looked so young that I took her for student age.
Well, I often wear a baseball-style cap that says "Ukraine" in Ukrainian (that's why I bought it), and when she saw that, she asked whether I have ever been to Ukraine... which became the start of a very enjoyable conversation.
It turns out, she is almost 30, comes from Zaporizhzhya, and has lived in America for years, having come here by marriage. For those who are curious, I got the impression that her husband is a year or two older than she, and they met when he had been working in Ukraine for several years.
With my own dreams of an international family, I have wondered about many of the challenges that must be overcome. I took the opportunity to ask her about how she learned English so well, the challenges of adapting to life in America, homesickness, and whether she would want her children to be connected to Ukrainian culture.
She spends about a month each year back home. There are some women who are willing to leave their homeland behind without a backward glance, but if I am lucky enough to find love over there, I will be happy to keep my wife connected to her familiar places, and anyway traveling there is a pleasure for me.
All very interesting!
And I learned from her that Aerosvit has a special sale on Fridays (I don't know when this started, I have looked at their website many times). She and her husband were able to get tickets this summer for $399, a hell of a discount. I will be looking next Friday...
Durak...that $399 price is from NY to Kiev. I saw it the other day but it is not advertised anymore so I don't know if it is still good. Also, add in over $200 in taxes.
They're everywhere.............I agree, just last summer I met a pretty young girl that worked at a gas station. After a few conversations I knew she was from eastern europe, I asked and she told me she was from Moldova near Ukraine border. She was in LA on a student visa with several others. Some guy used to pick her up from work...I always wondered what happened to her.
Also on Redondo Beach pier, there is an open air restaurant with a sign in russian...so I went in and found out it is owned by a russian couple....with a couple very pretty young russian girls that were working a 'packed' house...I wonder how many of us were in there for the 'sites'?????? ;-))
"They're everywhere" - even on TV. Take "Medium" as an example - Sofia Vladimirovna Vassilieva (you can't get more Russian than that!) as Ariel, although she was born in the USA, and Maria Lark (Bridget), born in Siberia but adopted as a baby by an American.
I apologize for not posting on this sooner, I've been very busy (in Russia at the moment).
beemer18 was mistaken, these prices are INCLUDING taxes. When you actually "ring it up," the $399 ticket (for example) is actually about $398. I've already booked a flight for September.
These promotions are shown on www.aerosvit.com every 2nd Friday (or at least, have been so far), the most recent being 24 July. On the home page, look for a big colorful sort of "banner" saying Crazy Fridays or something like that. The most recent sale was good all weekend, the previous ones only until midnight on Friday.
The promotions are good for certain travel dates: either you must go out and return on dates chosen from their list, or on the most recent promotion, go out on a listed date and return any time. Dates can sell out, so if you start booking a date and see the typical huge price, just go back and try another promotion date.
Note that some of the promotions are one-way, others round trip.
If you want to get to Ukraine in the fall, there will probably be some good prices on the next sale day (should be August 7, if they keep it up).
You can book a domestic round trip to jfk and then take the aerosvit. I have done this several times when the money is right partly because aerosvit has always treated me well and one time becuase I needed to syncronize with a one way out of Ukraine. The down side is if you have extra luggage you will pay the surcharge for both flights almost an issue the last time I flew (before international had a surcharge) in but after threatening to throw me out of the airport and then lining me up with a supervisor who waived the charges as was told to me earlier by online help the bags came free. Also you may have to switch airports to newark or lagardia to find a flight late enough to connect to Aerosvit and new york rooms start at 180 per night if a late enough flight is not available.
I previously checked the "Crazy Friday" flights on Aerosvit and all of the seem to be "one way" from New York to Kiev. I just booked "round trip" tickets from Grand Rapids Michigan to Kiev for $777.00 through "Priceline"... last time I traveled (in June) I paid $1100 just for a flight frm JFK to Kiev... pays to look around!
Okay Durak, I stand corrected.....I checked on day of my post and taxes were xtra at that time and price was more on that day. I didn't really check very hard when I did see that sale pricing. Since I am on west coast, it adds 3-4 hours on flight times to connect on east coast....I try to fly direct to paris or franfurt from LA for connections to ukraine...so much better.
You have to really check out those sites, I like bookingbuddy.com which allows you to check many different sites easily...just the other day on a flight from LA-Odessa was $706 on travelocity and it found that price toward the end when getting final cost, it was $936 in beginning.
I visit that shop a few times a year, and often see the Ukrainian gal and say hello. I was just there for my first time in months, wondering whether she still works there. As I approached the checkout counter, I saw a seated woman who resembled her, but from the distance I wasn't sure. When I got closer, I saw that it was indeed she, though she looked different ... because she was eight months pregnant. I greeted her in Russian, saying "you will be mother!"
She's happy about becoming a mom, and we agreed that the world needs more Ukrainian babies (certainly Ukraine does, it is losing population).
It's pleasant to see her doing well in her adopted country.
PS If anybody who looks at this thread reads about the cheap airfares, it's more than a year since I've seen any deep bargains like that. One never knows, they can appear suddenly...
A couple of days ago at the grocery, I bumped into this girl and her husband ... the groceries now have shopping carts with baby seats, and there was the handsome little guy, already 10 months old.
By the way, though I see I posted years ago that from conversation I had inferred that her husband was close to her age, I'm guessing by his looks that he's probably 10 to 20 years her senior, though it's difficult for me to gauge (some people get gray hair relatively young).
Of the FREE dating sites - the only one I have ever used is lovefoto.ru, also I guess known as mamba.ru.
I used it in an emergency in Lugansk. Definition of emergency-in-Lugansk = I had just gotten into town and didn't have a date for the evening. And I hate to eat alone. Hence, it was an emergency.
I found a gorgeous tall blond 21 year old who was willing to go out with me with one hour's notice.
She proved to be a little unreliable later - which is why I did not begin a coninuing relationship with her. But she was great for the evening.
