I'm flying out to Ukraine in a few weeks. I'm meeting ladies in Nikolaev, Sumy, possibly Zaporozhye and a place called Dneprorudnoye. I have never heard of this last place. There's pretty much nothing about it on the web (it's almost a Googlewhack), and there isn't even a reference to the place on this forum, but fiance.com lists it as the lady's address. It shows up on Google Map, so it does exist.
Can anyone tell me anything about the place? Where to stay, what's there etc. I don't want to ask her because, although I'm pretty sure she's genuine, I'm not putting myself in the position of asking her or her agency about anything that costs. I just want that side of things leaving out of the equation.
Well having never heard of it myself I just looked on Google Earth and it appears to be little more than a village thus you're not likely to find much about it on the web.
I know Zaporozhye like the back of my hand so if you want some info about this 'polluted' city then let me know, the best restaurant in town for the summer, to sit out on the veranda, is Billy Bones, O'Brien's Irish pub is good for all year round, sitting inside or outside, for the winter best restaurant is (sounds something like) Zy-eem-car, the Cossack national restaurant on the island is pretty good also except they don't accept plastic but avoid a place called Mustang like the plague because, despite the US military decorations, the food is sh1te.
Dniprorudne (Ukrainian: Дніпрорудне) is a city in Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine. Population is 23,000. It's a tiny town Not far from Zaporozhye. It is in 3 km from Kakhovskoye More railway station. They mine 3% of Ukrainian iron ore there. I'm not sure they have Internet connection there))).
Zip postal 71600
Phone extension +38 (06175)
I could find only one hotel there "Kakhovskie Zori" Sorry no information about the price. But I'm sure it's not so high. It's in the very centre of the town, and I also found a nightclub "Tornado" there. I think you can walk across all the town in half an hour.
The map is here http://maps.yandex.ru/?text=%D0%A3%D0%BA%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B0%2C%20%D1% 81%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%86%D0%B8%D1%8F%20%D0%9A%D0%B0%D1%85%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%81%D0 %BA%D0%BE%D0%B5%20%D0%9C%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B5&sll=35.028062,47.384068
As I found out there are no direct trains from large cities. Only one electric train from Kakhovskoye More (another tiny city), and to Kakhovskoye More you can get from Energodar city, and to Energodar from Zaporozhye. Or you can find some buses. It's a real hole, but I think you'll enjoy having rest on the bank of Kakhovka storage pond it's huge and picturesque.
That's all I could find about that place
And if you need any help in Nikolaev just ask about it
The FSU is such a fascinating place! I'm mad as hell that I'm too broke to be there now (crisis kicked my ass).
The Ukrainian name of the town is Дніпрорудне (Dniprorudne), the Roman spelling you have matches the Russian version of the name: Днепрорудно 077;. Probably people there speak Russian a lot more than Ukrainian.
As obscure a place as this is, it is no village! The google satellite image shows a big cluster of concrete apartment buildings, though maybe short by Soviet city standards (I'm guessing 4-5 floors max). The 2001 census was about 22,000 people.
It was founded in 1961 to house workers mining iron ore (romantic, huh?). It sits on the bank of the Dnieper/Dnipro at a point where the river is so wide (around 10 miles) that I imagine it looks like a sea.
It even has its own super-cool web page, that includes the city hymn (not joking) which can be downloaded as an MP3.

Seriously, please take lots of pictures and post them!
Zaporoshye's proximity, I'll probably be staying in there. (I have a few 'backup' options there if Dniprorudne girl falls through). Can you recommend any good places to stay? And maybe an interpreter? Miss Dniprorudne speaks zero English, so I think I'll need the help.
Any good places to stay? Yes, any place other than Zaporozhye :)
There isn't a good, western standard, hotel there, the best of the worst is the Intourist hotel, I've never stayed there but I've been in the reception, that was far enough!, and it's typically 'soviet' with drab colours etc.
There's another hotel, I think it's called 'Hotel Ukraine' or similar, but not to be trusted, one could book and pay for the best room in the hotel to ultimately find themselves in the sh1ttiest of rooms.
Apartments to rent in Zapororozhye are scarce but one of the members of this forum 'Chris' has some on his website, if you Google for 'travel2sevastopol' then you'll find his site.
Interpreters! Yes, my best friend in Zaporozhye owns an agency, whenever I've been in her office I've been tripping over interpreters, I can contact her but if she does it via the agency then it won't be cheap but I could try to persuade her to offer the job to one of the girls as an outside of work 'extra'
Let me have your approximate dates, for how many hours per day you anticipate needing an interpreter for, anything else, and I can drop her a line.
jonhill I'm sure that girl can find someone who speaks English. If she can't , there are 3 schools and 2 colleges in Dniprorudnoye. You'll easily find them. Just ask for an English teacher though it is Summer now you'll find one. And I'm sure you'll be very popular in that city. I think there were not a lot of foreigners there before. So take care, locals in small cities are rather aggressive, especially the youth after some bottles of vodka.
You can write me on arminsarg@yahoo.com for any questions.
Hello guys, I was reading through your conversation and I saw that you're looking for an interpreter. Well I happen to be one, and I'd be glad to assist you in getting around Zaporozhye. Fluent English, getting a master's degree in translation & interpreting, was studying at the US university for a year. If interested, please pm me.
Thanks again for all the help everyone. I'm asking her about dates and times then I'll start asking seriously re: interpreters. I may also need one in Sumy and Nikolaev, but I'm not sure yet.
About Dniprorudne, do you think it's easily reached by taxi from Zaporozhye?
Zaporozhye has an airport, it should have been condemned years ago, but the air services, by airline Motor Sich, are somewhat unreliable and perhaps only one flight to/from Kiev/Borispol per day.
45 minutes, by car, up the road from Zaporozhye is Dnepropetrovsk airport (Zaporozhye airport itself is 15 minutes from Zaporozhye) and Dnepr airport has several services daily to/from Kiev, it is served internationally by Austrian Airlines (connections thru Vienna), and probably internationally by other airlines also, and it's a lovely little airport.
Best bet is to get your lady to take a taxi to come to meet you, she can negotiate a better price than you can, and then you take, and you can pay for, the same taxi back to Dniprorudne.
There's a main road heading south from ZP to Dnip, probably full of potholes, but most roads are in Ukraine!
if your Dniprorudne girl doesn't prove to be a bit give her a miss, and alternatively check out their Paintball Club "Saigon2", http://paintball.dniprorudne.org.ua/
That MUST be a hit I'm sure, either to kill some time or to colour a rosier picture of your situation I guess. Prepare for war though, and don't forget to bring your camo's :))
jon let me know about Sumy I even found a cab last time for 100 usd to the airport. the best price for interpreter in Sumy is 5 an hour from Polena agency. she can also help with understanding the culture and women she has never charged me for giving her thoughts on any of the lady's. if you use her services tell her I said hello.
jonhill, I stayed at the Intourist hotel in Zaporozhye four weeks ago and it was a good experience for me. They have two selections of rooms. First, the older Soviet style (don't stay in these) and second, they have many newly upgraded (to Western standards) rooms also. I stayed in a "Standard modernized" room and the price was around $90. My room was similar to a good hotel room here in America. The breakfast is included. The reception area must have been remodeled since Smart Martin was there because it all looked "new" to me. Marble floors, large reception desk, comfortable lounge chairs and the staff was friendly. Check out their website at http://www.intourist.com.ua/rooms_en.htm It was kind of strange but when I reserved a room on their website I did not have to give them a credit card number... they simply held the room for me.
I'm typing to you from an hotel in Gatwick, getting on a plane tomorrow.
There have been a LOT of developments!
Long story short, the correspondence with the ladies has been an uphill downhill thing. Basically, the latest is that Miss Dneprorudnoye thinks its too soon to meet yet. Sounds bad I know, but I'm actually quite happy. The only ladies who've been eager to meet have been scams (even caught one of them on a Google search- she's such a pro, I feel blessed by celebrity just talking to her). Miss Dnep's definately interested, but seems cautious about this and other things. Between the lines, I think she's been pretty badly hurt before, but I don't mind, as it seems to suggest this is a real, genuine person - who's an absolute scorcher, but I digress..
I'm 50/50 on whether Sumy lady's a scam. Her agency's going on about hitting me for all kinds of costs, reckons she wont trust anyone but their interpreter, wants me to stay at an apartment near to her (which the agency happens to have connections with). I was willing to go along with it, but then it sounds shaky as to whether she'll even be there, and I've not left England yet. Hmmm.... I've pulled out for now.
The first lady to write to me is in Nikolaev, so we're going to meet up. She seems for real - she's been getting nervous about 'what if I don't really like her' etc. Her profile's been on here for over a year, so I'm reading between the lines that her hair's changed since her profile pic. Ah well!
Instead of Sumy, I'm staying in Kiev for now. I've contacted Kiev Connections, so I'll see how that goes.
I'm not really expecting to find 'love' this trip. More than anything I just want to see Ukraine and get an understanding of the people there. In the long run, it'll help in the whole endeavour. Flights are cheap enough that I can go again later on. This should give me time to figure out Miss Sumy, and let Miss Dnep get her head sorted out. In the meantime, I'll meet lots of FSU ladies face to face and figure out the situation over there. If I find love, great. If not, Sumy and Dnep lady's get another crack of the whip
In my bag, I have copies of all of the information you superstars have given me in all the threads. I got Kiev Connection's name from here, and I've got Polena's details, and everything else. I can't put into words how great it is having you guys to talk to.
Now let me guess, based on price alone, The Europa Hotel at Gatwick?
You're obviously flying with Ukraine International, on board make sure that you ask for 'Slavutich' beer, the crew will be so happy that you want to drink Ukrainian beer you can have 2 or 3 of them if you ask politely ..... and it comes in 500ml cans rather than the other beers that come in 330ml cans :)
