I will be traveling to the Kherson, UA. I would like to post a few questions to you all, as to where to get a Ticket for travel? I have been searching the internet Travel Sites.. not to bad, but is there cheaper ways? Looks to be about $900-$1,200 from Chicago to Kiev, but I need to get to Kherson. Next would be is there a Visa I need to apply for or just ticket and go? I have heard both on this.. but what is the final answer... I talked to a Travel Agent and she said there are alot of hoops to jump thru? But I hear, here and there that this is not true? I would like to buy my ticket for travel in the next 2-3 weeks, am I crazy.. or do able? I have been emailing "a" (I put in quotes, cause I am a ONE woman kinda guy, not in me to jugle)woman in Kherson for about 4 months now .. not yet talked on the phone... would like to but I will get the details from her shortly? Seems she has to make an effort to get to internet Cafe', I guess internet is not every where or readily affordable over there? She would love for us to stay in a Apartment when I make my visit, I don't mind this.. I guess I will leave this up to her to find such a place, unless anyone out here has line on such a thing? And I have not made a final decision the amout of time to spend there? But have been thinking of a 2 week travel situation, 1-2 days gettin there and 1-2 days gettin back making it about 10 days. Any thought? Thanks in advance if I don't get back to you, but am sure more questions will come up. I have read other threads.. and will try and find them again.
Being your first time, my advice may not be the best advice, but I will tell you what I would do:
1) You do not need a visa if you have an American passport, so you can go whenever you decide that it is good for you.
2) I would fly only till Kiev (KBP). Then I would spend at least one day in Kiev to get acquainted with this beautiful city.
3) Meanwhile, I would walk to the train station the day I arrive and would buy a train ticket to Kherson. However, make sure to buy "COUPE" or "SVED." Traveling any other way in train is not advisable (if you do not specify they will sell you the cheapest ticket possible. By the way, COUPE is four beds and SVED is two. People on those trains are usually nice and courteous. No worries there.
4)I would make sure to rent the apartment myself instead of letting her tell you where to rent it. If she insists that she will do it for you, I would consider that a red flag. There are many places in Internet that offer apartments in Kherson. Ask around for experiences about the most reliable.
5) Some people will tell you to fly to Odessa and take a taxi, bus, or train from there to Kherson. I would not do that. For me it is safer and more reliable to go directly from Kiev.
6) There is no much to do in Kherson, so make sure to be flexible with your plans if your girl does not work out.
Airfares are crazy - I'm glad I live near New York, it's a little easier to find best rates.
But I just tried an example search (Chicago to Kyiv, 2-week trip starting next week), and got $656 ... quite good!
What I did, was to go on kayak.com, and click "flexible" on the dates: +/- 3 days. To use the flexible search, you must "register", but this is very quick and no hassle. So save some money on your flight, and use it to have fun on your trip!
And good luck with Anna/Alexandra/Anastasia/Alena/Angela ;)
1. You don't need a visa if you are staying for less than 90 days. If you are still uncertain, look on the Ukrainian consulate general website.
2. From Chicago, it shouldn't be a problem to get to Kiev or Odessa. You can go Chicago to Warsaw, then Warsaw to Odessa on LOT Polish, or Chicago to Frankfurt, then Frankfurt to Kiev, on United or Lufthansa. Customs are much smoother in Odessa and in general the airport there is much less hassle.
3. I would suggest that you don't make any non-refundable travel arrangements before you speak to this woman on the phone. And definitely don't take your trip before you speak to her. Frankly, at this point you have been emailing somebody, and you don't even know if that somebody is real.
4. I personally would take a taxi from Kiev or Odessa. You can arrange this online before you leave America. Yes, it will cost a lot more, but the driver will pick you up and take you to where you are staying, without any hassle. It's about 6 hours from Kiev, and about 3 from Odessa. You can be in Kherson the same day that you arrive at the airport, saving your 1-2 "gettin there and gettin back" wasted days.
5. There are several internet cafes in the center of the city. It depends on where your lady lives and works. If she lives on the outskirts of town, it might be hard to use the internet. If she lives near the center, it should be easy, something she could do every day. When I used the internet cafe in Kherson last year it was very cheap--1 grivna for 15 minutes (12-20 cents depending on exchange rate).
5. For your first trip, if you don't know any Russian language, I'd stay in a hotel. The best one in Kherson, by far, is Hotel Diligence. Standard room is about $55 and you get free breakfast. The have a good restaurant there, and can give advice about where to go in the city. If you have some kind of problem they can help you with a taxi, or travel to another city, or whatever. Whatever you do, make arrangements yourself, and keep control over everything yourself, particularly since you haven't met this woman.
6. Personally, I wouldn't be thinking about staying with this woman since you haven't even spoken with her. Consider this first trip a get to know you trip.
7. Two weeks is a good amount of time, but have a back up plan with a local agency.
you haven't talked to her but your thinking of spending thousands of dollars for what is essential a blind date. you are crazy. don't do it. call her when you get the number. if its too difficult for her to visit an internet cafe then why should you fly half way around the world.
please use your head. the big one.
don't go before at least 15 long phone conversations.
listen to the advice from above. train isnt bad from Kiev if you need resources there are links to almost every thing you need at easyukraine. the most I ever paid for a flight was 800 normally I pay just over 500.
everybody in ukraine has access to the internet. and if they don't, they know someone who does. everybody also has a phone.
if someone can't give you a phone number,
it means you are talking to the interpreter or
she has a boyfriend and she doesn't want people calling her.
i will further add, kherson and nikolaev have replaced lugansk as scammer capital of ukraine.
the photos of the girls in kherson have been severly photoshopped.
at least get the girl to send you some photos than't havn't been profressionally done.
if she can't do this for you, why would you fly aroung the world for her?
Well, just reading gecko's post a bit above, here's my penny's worth:
I don't read any danger signs in Penny's original post, not that stand out, internet can be difficult for them, costs of internet cafe etc. He doesn't mention her 'English' skills thus it might be reasonable, should her English be cr@p, that they haven't spoken by phone, she talked of them having an apartment but no mention is made that she insists upon arranging that apartment, that's a regular danger signal, and I'm not going to pass judgement without further information!
But for Penny's benefit just Google "Kherson Apartment" to find apartments and/or prices for yourself.
My 'penny's' worth????
Since you are a 'one women man'....hope you don't mind IF you are left standing holding your '****' in your hand. Although you don't have much of a relationship yet, since I don't know really what is going on with the girl and you, I did met with the GF without ever talking on phone and she said it was hassle to get to internet cafe, so it is possible for her to be sincere. You didn't mention the girls english level, which would be impportant too.
As for flights, I would recommend flying directly to Odessa if possible(LOT airlines)and use a company to take you directly to Kherson from Odessa along with getting you the apt since you are a first timer. If things go wrong you have someone( company) to take you to Nikolaev or Odesssa to spend some time if things go sour quickly. Also, have some backup girls, going to an agency while there is $40-$150 a pop for a 'date' with a girl. It can be very interesting and firm up your ego to spend some time chatting up with young beautiful ukrainian girls.
I used ukrainefare in the beginning...good pricing.
If you go to Kiev...it is just another hurdle for you to jump. Overnight trains can be dangerous, keep your valuables wedged between you and the wall, a good 9-10 hours ride, good experience for the 'bucket list' in your life!!!!
Who said that overnight trains are dangerous? I have travel across Russia and Ukraine on overnight trains MULTIPLE times and I have never had a problem. Just make sure to get a sleeping car and the conductor will make sure that there is no trouble in the car.
The worst experience I had was going to Sevastopol only because I was in a room with a kid who did not want to sleep. Other than that, all my trips have been very pleasant and I woulld recommend it to anybody.
My fiancee travels like that (36 hours each way) all the time. That is two overnights. And she prefers that to flying.
36 hours one way, that is overnight (and a little more than overnight) train from Lugansk to Lviv ;) from the East to the West, I've been traveling with good friends, on the way back we were the best friends ;) but if going alone, I would prefer to fly....
Thanks ALL for your reply's! I know that there are scammers out there, and hope that I have not fell prey to another. I say another, cause I have used the Anastasia Website.. and figured on my own that paying per letter to Send and Open had to be Wrong. Then some how found another site with the normal set/up and monthly fee.. didn't pay anything for letters... also found that communicating with the women from this site, the women quickly went to personal emails. I ofcourse set up a dummy email.. been using that. We have exchanged photos. There have been times of one email a week cause she would travel to the coast with her family.. and I would travel too, and so both parties busy. She has told me of her family, and seems to have actually told her family of me, which I thought was kinda cool (genuine). She has never asked for $$$. Never insisted on the apartment, tho mentioned it more than once. Cause of the Homey aspect of it (romantic) fireplace and BBQ's, are BBQ's big over there.. she mentions that alot? I know I got to go over there with eyes wide OPEN.. and on the alert, for the redflags and other thieves. I have been thinking of this to be my introduction to International Travel..(to see the world before to late) and a great possibility at a wonderful relationship. I have asked for her Phone Number this weekend.. and hope to have her reply in a couple of days. Will update you all then. She does read and speak english well.. you all know the style. Kinda broken.. yet VERY understandable. Thanks for the input, All is welcome.
