I have sent this device and can not talk for free with my girlfriend! You should do it if you have someone you wish to talk to and save a few dollars at least.
Of course, talkoption meant to say "can now talk for free"
I should have posted about this before: a friend of a friend tried this during the spring or summer, taking 2 magicjacks to family members in Ukraine. I was curious, because Russian telephones have (or at least had) different electrical standards from those in the West, but the experiment worked fine.
The limitation is that your foreign friend must have a computer, and a good enough internet connection. Because of the way internet services work there, it might not be free for the Ukrainian.
That being said, it's very cool to have another low-cost talk option.
Thank you durak for correcting my typo. You have a way with words it appears.
I spotted a fake girl and reported it to the agent. The birth date and age was in conflict and at first I thought it was a canned letter that had not been updated. But the agent called and confirmed she was to good to be true.
The clue was that she went right into private email mode. Girls with English and email are very easy to communicate and their is a reason so the scam can be done.
If someone has a computer and internet then why not just use skype and be able to do all the nice skype things like video/text chat/file transfer etc ? :-). If in essence you want to use a normal handset for internet/VOIP calls then there are generic USB-phone adaptors that dont tie you to partilar provider like MJ does.
Please tell me about this USB-phone adapters as I have not heard of them. Skype is a service that takes over the computer from what I have heard but I have not actually tried it. MJ is now $30. It is very cheap.
I send videos as attachments as with pictures. Is there a comparison of these features somewhere as the need to know the pros and cons would be a good service?
As for skype "taking over" your computer I'm not really sure what that means: its just an application that you run, you can still do anything else you like on the computer while communicating with skype.
In response to the question, "why not just use skype?"
magicjack offers one thing that most other internet solutions don't: if you give your friend in Ukraine a magicjack, their telephone-tied-to-a-computer will have a real phone number, that you can dial from any phone in any country. And it will be a US number, at that!
Skype is a great way to communicate computer-to-computer or computer-to-phone. It your called party has computer and a decent internet connection they can leave on at the times you want to call, magicjack lets you communicate phone-to-computer (-to-phone).
Probably there are other things I don't know about, but magicjack lets you reach your called party by phone, and it is mighty cheap.
Caution: I DON'T know how good the service is (reliability of getting calls through, sound quality, etc.)
AFAIK the Skype feature "online number" does exactly what you describe. Basically you get a "local" number that you can call which is then routed via the skype network to the recipients computer.
Thanks devil, I didn't even know about Skype online number.
If everything works as advertised, magicjack should be cheaper, because a skype number costs $60/year. magicjack is $20/year, plus about $30 for the gadget and shipping (one-time cost). You have to pay (not very cheap) to make international calls with magicjack, but it would seem that incoming calls are free (haven't verified this), so you could call your friend in Ukraine for free, and it should be free for them to call a US number (because they are calling from a "US number").
So, if magicjack really works, it is a cheaper way than skype to get between US telephones and a computer in Ukraine (or almost any country). But skype works very well, and I'm told that it works on dial-up. I just don't know how good the call quality/reliability is with magicjack, and it reportedly requires real broadband internet.
So are you saying that Magicjack really works if i will send it to Ukraine? Will it work in Ukraine?? I have a girlfriend there and a lot of times she's not able to get hold of me on skype or same thing with me and i have to call here cellphone. Calling on mobile to Ukraine is kinda spendy so im thinking to send a magicjack to her and see if that will work? Any advices? Plz help if anyone tried using magicjack in Ukraine or other country?
I have Magicjack. As far as sound quality, sometimes there is static, other times it works just fine. I work it through a wireless internet connection, so perhaps some of my problems are not with Magicjack at all. Magicjack has a website where you can at least discuss these problems with a live chat. They will give you tricks to improve the connection quality.
I was thinking of sending or bringing one to Ukraine. Mr. Durak says Ukraine has different phone standards, but it worked just fine. My understanding here is one does not need to also send or bring a telephone as the Ukrainian telephones work just fine. Am I correct?
RB If weight is not a problem, you probably have a phone laying around. While every woman has a mobile phone, landlines are quite rare. Even the small phone kiosks located in the "Soviet" apartment complexes are gone into history
Weight is not a problem, but I like to bring little things like chocolates to fill my weight quota. I have cordless phones lying around, but they require 110 volt electricity. I am not 100% comfortable in buying one from here that doesn't require you to plug it into electricity and then plugging it to a computer over there that requires 220 volts. Yes, landlines are probably rare over there, but are landline telephones still available in stores?
RB: The Magic Jack probably has the typical ATT RJ connector. The telephone installations I saw there were of a Soviet type. My suggestion was to simplify your "plug and pray" install. Maybe you could send a cheap Chinese version that ships directly to Ukraine from Ebay. Possibly what was referred to as a "zip phone" when ATT was broken up. They are poor quality but operate without a separate power supply. If a standard phone works with Magic Jack.
mj has one advantage over skype. your new friend or family can call your cell phone whenever they want. with the time difference it can be quite handy. I have found that internet service is quite fast when its working. it does go down at times but for the most part is normally on.
Thanks, Rodan. I was trying to get out of getting a phone, but I guess it's better to get one. I did not think of the connector. There are two considerations: connector and voltage. Since talkoptions work, perhaps the voltage is not a problem.
