Thank you to all of you for your advice and your help,i very much appreciate everything i have read here.i have decided to let kiev connections pick me-up and take me to my apartment.the apartment is overlooking independance square,2 mins from brett's office.the lady i'm meeting has a friend who will interpret for us,book everything, show us all over the city,4-5 hours per day for $300 for 7 days.i'm not sure about any of this because its my first vist into eastern europe.is the fee ok?it seems cheap enough to me,but i'm a novice, and new to all of this.i have been lucky enoughy to have travelled to 30 different countries without any mishaps,i but i have no experience in ukraine or russia.the most dangerous city i was in was manila-philippines,murders everyday.i'm so looking forward to seeing some feminine, beautiful ladies, and the beauty of kiev.where i live in rural northen uk,there is nothing here but sheep !!one last thing where can i get an electronic interepreter ??? much appreciated.
If you not sure abour any of this just let me tell you that $300 is around 3 times the average monthly wage.
You can but an electronic device to translate words anywhere. For about $300.
I'm guessing, that during your sightseeings, when stopping for refreshments/meals you'll be expected to pay for the guide's refreshments/meals etc. If you're going places by taxi then pay for the taxi's also, and you'll have 3 in the relationship. As you say, your first time, but could end up costing significantly more than $300.
Where in northern UK are you, Scotland, England, have you got any bridges left where you are? :)
The Philippines is now top of the UN list of dangerous countries to live - ahead of Iraq and Afganistan. By contrast, I found Kiev to feel safer than England (I'm from Liverpool). You'll be fine.
The fee is pretty steep though. I don't think even KC charge that much for an interpreter (and they're not a particularly cheap agency). I paid $150 for a week of guidance and translation in Sumy (anywhere between 5-8 hours a day). Kiev is a generally more expensive place, but still be careful.
For an electronic translator... I use the Ectaco model# iTRVL TL-6. It has a selectable full Russian/English electronic keyboard and it is powered by windows. I bought it directly from their website. http://www.ectaco.com
As Smart Martin! has told you, the interpreter will expect the same dinner and drinks that you buy for your girl... if you use her do not take her to the evening diner! ... could end up costing a bundle. I typically pay $60 to $100 for the evening meal at a nice restaurant... so loose the interpreter before then or your cost for food will skyrocket.
if you really want to play it safe, purchase the orgasmatron 2000!
WG 44, you have travelled, you are a man of the world, I played it safe the first time I went there. After a couple days I realized... ain't so bad, just like being in Italy, France, Germany Australia or any other place they don't speak English. It will cost a few more shckles, but KC will look after you if you are in a bind. Plus as a 'back up' plan, you can always get a date with one their gals. enjoy
oh! speaking of income, my lady told me her her mom makes $100/month pension. And has to work still at 67 to just survive. And they are fortunate to have three and a half apartments between them. The half was a purchase of a place the never finished. Kind of like buying a condo in North carolina and the builder goes bankrupt half way through construction. Imagine owning an aprtment that is half structure and half piece of paper. A lot of people lost a bunch there a few years back. But when the building business booms again in southern russia, I'll have a retirement property...kidding
Martin, you sound like a local :) Yes, and no. The buses do go there, but they rarely survive intact :) Actually, Speke's not so bad any more. Huyton and Dovecot are the 'livelier' spots these days. I found it so funny when a few of my 'dates' in Kiev insisted I be careful because of muggers. laugh much? :D
I've worked at Speke, sorry I mean John Lennon, airport twice during my career, first time (1994/1995) I B&B'd at a pub in Garston, second time (2001) I played it safer and rented a flat in Northwich :)
But, particularly during 1994/1995, I had a tremendous time there with the Scouse humour and the Scousers enjoyed my humour also :)
Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, DETROIT, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New Jersey - couldn't single out one paricular city in NJ. Detroit again. etc. It's the same in all big cities. Some worse than others. I wondered around a lot of places in Kiev, places I probably should not have been at night or by myself during off hours. I never felt threatened once. And I did run across some shady characters. Just know your limits and be able to stand your ground. And of course don't take risks.
m-c I was referencing 'sleeper' woody allen flick. forget the actual model, but i want one myself!
westerngent44 - there are hundreds of translator devices on amazon, neweeg etc, just punch it in you will have very many to choose from at reasonable prices. amazon is fairly quick, neweeg gets it there withing two days etc. etc. etc. Can't say I know one from the other, but there are reviews and you can read up on the products with direct links from these sites. give it a shot
Westerngent: Take in everything you have learned on this site and remember everything is negotiable. Pay only as sevice is rendered. They know you are new to this as well and should know you are receiving advise as to what is normal business. If there is no acknowledgement of your concerns, then be even more cautious. Before you go make sure that anyone you are going to be picked up by has sent you a picture of themselves and identified themselves. Leave those pictures with someone at home and get a sim card at the airport. SMS the license number of the car that you are picked up in. Just as the lady is meeting with you the first time, you are in a similar position. I travel with only limited funds and use a credit card without the ability to use at a ATM. I must go into the bank and get cash from a person of authority. If you do the same make sure those you are meeting understand that is how it works and ask them to notify a bank they deal with. Notify your credit card company as well before you go and when you return.
Have a good time and understand your next trip you will be more confident. I have made several trips and now I make all my own travel arrangements. It is amazing how it "culls the herd". I never felt that I was overcharged for the service I received , but still the agencies are in business. I had concerns on a planned trip that was cancelled several months ago. Today I sent Christmas presents to the lady I rescheduled to meet and her agent as well. Sometimes concerns are merely misunderstandings
WG-44 also if you do as Rodan says, make sure the guy 'knows' you are sending sms of his license plate, but why not use KC driver? ain't as cheap, but guaranteed.
martin -- I was wondering who would be the first to catch it - you win!
