I am trying to get some info to possibly plan a trip to the Ukraine (specifically Nikolaev) sometime in February. I'm having some complications w/ the travel sites. Has anybody made a trip to the Ukraine in say, the past year(or longer)? Who did you do your air flight booking thru & how much was it? I'd like to hear ANY info, advice etc..from anyone having traveled there.
I've gotten some preliminary info of $3,200 Round Trip & that's more than double what I paid for a trip to Bangkok, Thailand a year ago. Have the airfares skyrocketed that much???
$3,200 sounds way over the top, there are a lot of links on such sites as www.travel2ukraine.org , try working your way through the various travel sites.
Whoa, Bill! $3200? From where, the South Pole? I somehow picture you as an American guy -- if you will post your nearest airport, I can help you better. From most places in the USA, you should be able to make this trip for less than half of that!
Lots of guys here have recently traveled to Ukraine. I was twice in 2009 (my 9th and 10th visits, I think). I generally search several websites, depending on where I want to go.
Airfares have not skyrocketed, they are generally much cheaper than one year ago.
I have priced out a sample trip: from JFK (in New York), by a combination of airline and taxi, a one week round-trip (that would put you there during the strategic Valentine's day weekend) is $900.
I'm suspecting that, to get that price, bgpa might have searched USA/Odessa, very little choice of airlines, need to search USA/Kiev then book connecting flights Kiev/Odessa.
Aeroflot has their sales to Kiev at moment...sample is from lax-kbp is low $700's(2/10-2/24). To book from lax-ods is about $1250 and as martin says, not a lot of different airlines.
I use bookingbuddy.com and it has many different sites there.....my favorite ones are tripadvisor, sidestep and bing.com...they should encompass all the different ones we all know of.
Thanks guys.
1 issue is I live in South Texas against the Gulf of Mexico. A significant ways to LAX's international hub. Another is finding my "TO" airport. Martin, I WAS trying the Odessa (ODS - airport code). That's where I was getting the extremely high returns. I have used Kayak which searches all the major travel sites & gotten a little better return #s. If you consider $1500 from Lufthansa GOOD even though I carefully select weekdays. I will now run my searches by going into Kiev. American Airlines, the carrier I usually use does not even fly into the Ukraine. Durak, if you would be kind enough to PM me just some of the rough details of the sample you ran I'd appreciate it.
I'm usually competent enough at this sort of thing but I knew the #s I was getting were screwed up so I came here.
Looking at Durak's & Ragingbull's posts have me feeling better already.
We are obviously dealing w/ "operator error" here. I will rerun with the Kiev location.
Thx as always!
Do a general google search on cheap flights to kiev, internal flights are cheap try booking through expedia or through the airlines direct for internal flights. The cheapest i have ever done both flights is around 400 bucks but that is because i am from the UK.
I flew from Chicago to Kiev this past Feb (14-24) on Delta and it cost, at the time, $615. I used Skyscanner.com for my best price and connections, etc.
My advice is to buy your domestic flights in Kiev. It is cheaper because western sites are not competitive for flights in Ukraine. "gotonikolaev.com" has a link with round trip for @ $200. I have flights now for 2 trips Kiev to Kharkov and Kiev to Simferopol at $36 round trip for each flight. Check on different days and with different carriers they can change from minute to minute up and down for the same flight. Aerosvit has special pricing on specific days and routes on Fridays. Last week was meager on sales though. You may have to find smaller carriers to Nikolaev. Flights to Kiev or the major hubs of Europe are competitive. You should be able to make arrangements for @ $1200 total trip. In Ukraine try Dnieproavia Airlines they are a commuter type carrier
I think that the original poster may be a first-time visitor to the FSU. I wouldn't recommend the train for a first-timer who doesn't speak Russian, it could be a bit stressful.
The $900 trip I found last night includes a round-trip flight to Odessa and a pre-booked taxi ride (also round-trip) between the airport and Nikolaev.
to get the best rates from the travel sites like kayak book on tuesday of wednesday from the site and try to fly on a wednesday or thursday. I have priceline on the site because a lot of times there cheep but kayak can find them lower.
bgpa, I'm currently in Nikolaev right now on a holiday visit to see my wife and daughter. Have you been here before? I also live in South Texas. I drive to San Antonio and fly United to Ohare airport in Chicago. Then switch carriers and use LOT Polish Airlines to fly from Chicago to Warsaw and then onto Odessa. I feel this is the best flight availalbe as the pricing is about $1,100 round trip on CheapOAir.com.
Also, my wife is afraid of me flying into Odessa in the evening time. LOT gets in at 2PM which is perfect with the current weather. Actually, my flight was a little late getting in on Monday and I got in about 3 PM. By the time we were in Nikolaev the visability was damn near zero. There is a one lane road from Nikolaev to Odessa that is full of pot holes but it's the best they've got. Once here though you won't complain. Very pretty girls here.
On the website fly from San Antonio to Odessa and try switching around the dates a little. LOT doesnt fly every day. On the return trip I overnight in Chicago. Usually stay at the Hampton inn for about $100 and pay for long term parking at $6.00/day at the economy airport parking lot.
Alot of folks speak broken english here so it's not impossible to get around but it'll be better if you have someone helping you out. While here try a resaurant called Dikanka. It's wonderful. Also, across from the park where the father Nikolaev statue is there is a brand new cafe/rest that just opened up on the corner. Very good food indeed. You are sure to find the McDonalds here. Across the street from McDonalds is a large building with an excellent store at the bottom. They've got food, liquor, sweets etc...(just in case you find yourself alone due to the prospective girlfriend becoming a scammer)
Anyway, good luck!! I know you'll have some fun. If you can speak about 100 russian words or so you'll do much better...IMO
I made the trip to Nikolaev in November from Dallas. Airfare was about $1,000 and I travelled from DFW to ORD to Warsaw, Poland to Odessa, Ukraine. Took a car from Odessa to Nikolaev. This route locally than Kiev - Nikolaev is closer to Odessa than Kiev.
I met a great local contact and intepreter. She is honest, smart and well connected. Arranged most of my local details including apartments and car service. And she's really attractive to boot. Very much on the legitimate side, not arranging hookers, etc. Send me a PM if you'd like contact info.
I have done multiple searches for flights say from Corpus Christi to LAX or Chicago & NY. That is the huge difference. Going anywhere in the US & 1/2 the trip is getting out of TX. I had 1 tip that I am going to try & that is airfares from Houston International & just make the 4 hour drive there. Experimenting w/ the flights into Kiev & then just get a puddle jump flight to Odessa from there.
Unless I manage to find the $900 RT plus taxi posted by durak & I'd be just happy as a peach w/ that!!
