I'm planning my next trip to Mariupol, and I'm looking for an apartment in a better location than last time. I'd like to stay dead in the city centre, but I don't know any of the street names. If anyone knows the streets there, could you tell me if any of the following are good locations:
Lenina Ave
Metallurgov Ave
Stroiteley
Nikolaevskaya St.
Ideally, I want something walking distance to restaurants and (especially) supermarkets.
Hey Muzzy, I've never been there, but I just made a 'web recon'. Every time I look up one of these towns, I get the itch to go there and explore. Mariupol is startling from the satellite pictures -- a pair of giant steel mills, with town scattered around :)
Mariupol has a historic center, where most of the commercial and cultural buildings are located. This is where I would want to get an apartment, if I were there. If it follows the typical FSU city pattern, there will be plenty of places to eat nearby. For groceries, I would expect at least kiosks and the Ukrainian equivalent of convenience shops. If you are to the north/west side of the center, some big apartment blocks are not far away, likely to have a serious supermarket nearby.
Lenina Proizd - This is the "main drag" into town, so parts of it are very far from the center. Any address below 75 (odd) or 66 (even) is in the center. The lowest addresses are within about 1 km of the sea, and also about as close to Azov steel works as I would wish to stay.
Metalurgiv Proizd - To my eye, this road marks the outer edge of the central area. Probably the most convenient addresses are in the 20s through the 70s.
Nikolaevskaya (Mikolaivska) Vulitsa - Runs alongside Lenina to the north, addresses through the 80s are central.
Stroiteley Proizd (apparently renamed to Budivelnikiv, lots of Ukrainian streets were renamed after independence, but are confusingly known by both names) - All of the addresses above are within 2 or 2.5 km of the sea, and the 'downtown', but this street is another km or so farther out -- for me, this would be too far from center.
No doubt, and old Mariupol hand on the forum will be able to point out some good markets and eateries. Happy planning!
Muzzy you're best bet would prospecto Lenina it is close to everything in town. Thearte cinema stores good restuarants. The Acropolis and Our meeting place being my two favorites. Prospect Stroitely is where my wifes flat is and not far either but Lenina is the best for location for everything.
