I am thinking of relocating to somewhere warmer than UK and hopefully it will be easier for my Ukrainian Girlfriend to join me.
I have been looking on the internet for countries where permanent visa's are easier to get with the usual contradictions in information.
Cyprus seems possible or maybe Montenegro.
My house is paid for in UK, so I could rent it out and use the cash to rent somewhere initially and maybe buy later if there are no problems.
I have some cash and a small pension so would effectively be retiring, if the cost of living isn't too high.
I wondered if anyone has done the same with success and which country they have lived.
Which Cyprus are you talking about, the Turkish occupied zone or the recognised (British Commonwealth) Cyprus?
The Turkish zone is still, internationally, considered an illegal occupation, international flights are not allowed, just check for flights from UK and you'll find they need to touch down en-route in Turkey before continuing to the zone.
With regards to the recognised Cyprus, well it used to be easy, during the summers it was swamped with Russians, but then it became part of the EU, I haven't been to Cyprus since EU so don't know how tourist numbers may have changed but they needed to adopt EU visa regulations regarding non EU nationals.
But consider that you're never likely to have home based rights as you would in UK, as a UK national your lady comes here and after the required period(s) she gets social security, passport etc.
You would never be a Cypriot national, you'd always be a visitor there, you wouldn't have home based rights and if you were always a visitor then your lady would, likely, be considered a visitor of a visitor and no British passport rights etc.
And the same goes for any other country but becomes probably more complicated outside of the EU.
JinUk,
Why would you be looking for a warmer country when it looks like your at retirement age? ( no offense here).
What I'm saying is, your've put up with the cold for so long now????
Have you considered contacting someone from a Government immigration website or immigration solicitor???
Martin's been to Glod in Romania.
Don't go there, right Marty ;)
Why not Spain? It's an EU country and warm. It still has the same problems as most of the other European countries such as immigration and social unrest in some areas. But at least it's making some inroads into addressing these problems before it's too late.
I'll be there in 3 years living and working until retirement. Two reasons:- U.K. is dying a slow death brought about by politicians who allow companies to export jobs to shithole exploitive countries and allow those countries to export their own societies dregs into UK.
Plus it's cold.
(U.K. is dying a slow death brought about by politicians who allow companies to export jobs to shithole exploitive countries and allow those countries to export their own societies dregs into UK)
Partly that. I'm thinking more about companies like the one I work for who now have most of their product made in the far east. This also includes intellectual work being done there too.
During the UK government expenses debacle I was reading a Spanish newspaper which suggested that Britain leads Europe in the league of having most corrupt politicians.
I got sent an email today...the ten most expensive disasters. Cherynoble is at number 2 at around 250 billion.
Number one is the 300 billion Gordon Brown used to shore up the UK economy after the collapse of certains banks.
Britains problems go much further back, do you remember the days when we had a car/truck industry, such great names as Rover, Triumph, Bedford, Austin, Morris etc. etc. etc. yet we don't have a single mass car producer now and most car producers we have are foreign owned.
Something closer to my heart, the once British aircraft industry, such great names as Hawker, Hawker Siddeley, Avro, Handley Page, De Havilland, Vickers, British Aircraft Corporation etc, we developed the jet engine, the VSTOL Kestrel/Harrier, the first jet airliner (even if it did keep crashing) etc. but we either sold these designs to USA or we phucked up much earlier.
The British airliner manufacturers designed airliners merely for the requirements of BEA, BOAC etc. whereas the likes of Boeing targeted a worldwide market. UK had the Comet and then the VC10, the Yanks had the B707 and DC8, just compare the sales figures between USA and UK, it's an appalling disgrace upon UK.
Even before Concorde we had the fastest airliners in the world, the VC10 and then the DH/HS121, both built for the British market likewise Concorde itself was designed merely to cross the Atlantic so why the phuck would any other airlines, other than transatlantic operators, ever consider buying it?
These days we have call centres in third world countries, that's something that comes with the invention of the internet, but UK's problems go much further back!
Anyway, we're drifting away from the topic of the thread.
IMO the rot began when GB ceded its naval might at the behest of uncle sam between the wars.
But like you say this is going off topic....Cyprus?...nah..it's just another fucked up little sovrienty which is neither here nor there in the European order of things.
UK wont see the glory days again, but Spain, like I said, is taking a stance against the potential of a social security system bankrupting the nation.
At least it's a start. Waht the UK needs is a strong arm like Putin was for Russia. For all his faults at least he didn't allow USA to ride rough-shod over him.
Not getting involved in Greek/Turk politics but Cyprus, a British Commonwealth country, became invaded during 1974 and the invading nation remain there to this day.
Any prizes for guessing if Cyprus has oil reserves or not? :)
You seem very annoyed by the USA? Is it because our gross domestic product (GDP) is larger than the next five richest countries (Japan, China, Germany, UK and France) COMBINED ? Get over it and remember the world is always changing; the Cadbury deal was strictly a Wall Street takeover of a rival company that could produce profits. It was not engineered by our government... strictly a profit driven acquisition by a major Wall Street company. Also don’t be concerned that the UK ceded it’s naval superiority to the USA during the last half century… you are now part of NATO and the USA will protect your little country if it is attacked. <smile>
Mini I doubt if the GDP is greater than the combined of those 5 countries you mention. And anyway IMO the GDP of one country is not as important as the living standards of its inhabitants. In terms of health and access to health care, education, quality of life..I think you'll find USA is way down the list.

GDP, GDP Per Head and PPP
A large economy is not necessarily an accurate representation of the country's wealth but it is a reasonable approximation to assume that the higher the GDP the richer the country. Whilst this will have limitations it is a simple way to define the top 10 richest countries and the poorest country. Often GDP is expressed as "per head" to account for the size of the population and therefore provide a comparison between countries. This comparison has been further refined by PPP (Purchasing Power Parity), which adjusts for cost of living differences using the US as a benchmark.
World's Top Ten Richest Countries by GDP
The Richest Country by GDP is the US with an annual GDP of $14.8 trillion.
1.United States of America. GDP = $14,839bn, GDP per head = $48,400, PPP = $48,400
2.Japan. GDP = $5,388bn, GDP per head = $42,310, PPP = $35,710
3.China. GDP = $4,818bn, GDP per head = $3,600, PPP = $6,830
4.Germany. GDP = $3,440bn, GDP per head = $41,550, PPP = $36,100
5.France. GDP = $2,734bn, GDP per head = $43,910, PPP = $35,750
6.United Kingdom. GDP = $2,442bn, GDP per head = $39,470, PPP = $36,82
I rest my case.
Dansing, shut up. If your country had oil we would have taken it from you years ago.
Mini nobody is diputing that America is a rich country. Your original claim was that the GDP of America was greater than the combined of the next 5 countries. You proved that statement to be incorrect with your IMF statistics.
Also; the point I am making is that just because USA is rich country doesn't make it the best place to live.
As a Yank I would agree with you, the USA sucks. I am expatriating myself because they are trying to copy the Europeans, thumb sucking nanny boys crying over their entitlements.
Mmmm...I'm wondering why that went right over my head...
Agree with what? I never said USA sucks. I said just cos it's big doesn't man it's the best place to live.
