When I needed to ask directions in Moscow from a babushka it didn't seem to help. She couldn't understand anything! I prefer google translate! It is surprising how many of them know English and you don't really have to rely on the electronic translator that much. My translator is a touch screen "ECTACO iTRAVL TL-6". It is much more than a mere translator it is powered by "Windows CE" and provides many, many other functions other than a simple translator. It features a full touch screen keyboard (Russian or English) and too many other options to mention. I don't think this particular model it is available now because they have upgraded their translators. However, I have never been let down by carrying this simple device with me. Whether it be taxi drivers, ordering a drink at a bar or making first contact with a woman… it has helped me. But it does not come cheap... be prepared to spend about $400 on it.
