It is more or less strange if it happened after you had been there as opposed to it happening at some point before.....or just the thought it could have happened while you were there!!
I've been to both airports SVO and DME! I liked DME, but it was extra time to get there by taxi! I haven't had the news on yet,,, my parents are old and are going to Sxxx when they see this!! I hope they don't see it,, even though I'm not going to Moscow. How has KBP been lately??? I'll be there a week + 8 hours from now!!??
I am planning a trip there this summer. And heading south. Makes me wonder if my trip to Sochi for the 2014 olympics is a good idea. By then the islamic extremist will have a stronger base in the region. There have been a series of attacks in russia over the past few years, mostly thought to be from the northern caucausus region of the chechyan islamic influences. they are still pissed off at russia for the years of oppression and taking over the land. now russia has become another of the imperialist societies filled with infidels.
for a country in such disarray, with the corruption and no solidarity of the federation, they are an easy target. a country whose source of income for many is to get as many bribes as possible, how can they assure policies and protocol are adhered to? they can't. and until the government realizes how weak their infrastructure is and fixes it, the threat of terrorists will be omnipresent. the 'war' with chechnya will last for a while. and as soon as we strike a deal with russia for oil we will be sending troops to fight their war.
lonelyranger - I suggest you travel light. but by then security will be high. these are hit and run terrorists. you probably have six months until the dust settles.
@lonelyranger: Russia is a target because of its bloody warfare etc. in the Caucasus. Ukraine has kept its hands much cleaner, and (as far as I know) hasn't had an issue with terrorism. In my experience, the security measures at KBP are similar to other airports in Europe. Sometimes, passengers have to go through a second security screening when flying to the US.
KBP is getting a new terminal, but I read that it's not opening until the end of 2011. The greatest security hazard there is getting mobbed by aggressive taxi drivers after you pass Customs.
@Ralph: A couple of years ago, when I learned that the next winter Olympics will happen in Russia -- so close to the troubled Caucasus region -- I had the sad expectation that some really spectacular terrorist attacks will be attempted there.
Sochi is 300 miles away from Chechnya's capital; it is 250 miles from Beslan, where more than 1000 were taken hostage at a school in 2004, with more than 150 children killed. And it is 200 miles from Nal'chik, whose downtown had two protracted gun battles between militants and security forces in 2005.
Of course, the Russian government understands the threat and will certainly take every security precaution they can. There will be so many people there, that the likelihood of harm to any individual visitor will be very small, even if attackers can get through -- anyway, I don't let such things deter me from travel. But probably there will be plenty of security screening.
If you haven't met Russia's special police (OMON), you'll probably get to see plenty of them in Sochi. The look more like soldiers than cops, wearing camouflage and holding Kalashnikovs. Their motto: "We know no mercy and do not ask for any."
I can't believe that the Olympics will be held in Sochi in 2014. What were they thinking? I've also known of it for years - but is seems to me to be begging for trouble.
My other thread on this was started before Mr Durak's, but was approved after.
It is unfortunate that there are places where there is no security in parts of the airport, and there are tight security elsewhere. I am sure this will change. This bomb went off in the arrivals section where security is lax. I know that security is tight in the departures section.
I only passed by that airport for a four hour lay over. I was greeted by name at the gate by a pretty security person. She escorted me to get my boarding pass and then to the gate. We were already inside a separate section where security measures were taken for anyone to get in. I talked with some people in line and they said that it took three security checks to get into that section. We still had to go through another security check at the boarding gate. Up to then, my experience with taking off the shoes for security was random. Only certain people were asked to take their shoes off. In this case, everyone were required to take their shoes off.
Having worked in aviation for some 35 years there is no way, just by the nature of the beast, to make airports secure ..... even if every person entering a terminal were to strip, be x-rayed, and have a probe stuck up their ass, the b@stards could still go stand outside the airport perimeter with a surface to air missile launcher in hand.
You think these scanners you walk through provide security? ... Well how come a scanner leta you through at one airport but at the next airport, whilst you are still wearing the same attire, it bleeps? They are a 'hit or miss' affair, they are there to let you believe that you cannot carry/conceal anything through them.
but my thread was submitted before durak's thread. and nobody posted on it because it was approved after durak's. - rb
boo-hoo-hoo
get a life already. nobody cares. that was a juvenile statement. it highlights the fact that much of what you say has no credence because - this is an explanation - you seek validation for everything and lash out at those who disagree with you or question you. who the fkkk cares if you said it first? you want credit for it. okay. congratulations that you were the first one to bring up the news of a terrorist attack in russia. but because everything you post must be approved, someone without that stigma beat you to it.
I was disappointed as hell durak posted about it before me. I raced home from work to be the first. I only cried for twenty minutes and got over it. but I didn't tell anyone about it until now. so now everyone knows that I cried because I wasn't the first post about the event.
on a lighter note, Vera Zvonareva is going to the semi-finals in the aussie open. a russian gal who wore a black band for the victims of the moscow bombing. she is from moscow and was very articulate and noble in her responses to questions about it.
it seems the ukraine dude playing now may lose. lost first set in tie breaker and is down 4-2 in second set. but it is time for bed and I can't stay up to watch it. but the flyers won and bobrovsky (another russian) once again played a hell of a game in goal.
Remember what I said about not starting it? Why should I care about who gets credit for starting this thread nor if anyone posted on mine? All I was doing was trying to explain that I did not intend to post what I did if I had known that Mr. Durak did already. Just because that's how you would feel does not mean I would.
I never thought this was a contest on who starts the thread with the most responses. If you win, what do you get? More power to you, Mr. Durak. You are more eloquent than me.
There is a big difference betweeen an adult having a childish thought from someone with childish behaviors trying to be an adult.
Boo-Hoo-Hoo.......Why is it someone HAS to announce they were first...just to make sure EVERYBODY knew that. THAT is so childish with what is termed by psychologists as someone with a attention and recognition disorder or to put it mildly..... someone with a problem between the ears!!!
Did you not read what I posted, Beemer? I don't know why I have to explain things to you. That problem between the ears is yours. I should have elaborated. I don't care who was first. I should have stated that I started another thread and I should not have.
There is nothing I can do about the bombing. But, I cannot allow such things without response. I am not unique in my opinions in this forum. Others like me are silenced because they see what I am going through. Even if I was unique, I believe I have something to contribute and I have learned as well. Yes, there are times I am disruptive, but most of the times, if not all, is in response to them. When they cannot find anything wrong, they make it up, as in this case. Let this go and it will escalate.
I was having a bad day. And in my short sightedness I, without cause, provoked rb. I apologize to all. And I was doing such a good job ignoring a lot of ...
