I'm nearing the end of my journey and on June 10 I will be flying home with my fiance and her daughter... Wonderful! However, my fiancee informs me that she will bring 5 suitcases full of clothes and her daughter will likewise bring five suitcases full of clothes. Looks like she is in it for the long haul! My problem is, how to move all this luggage to America. Does anyone have suggestions on alternate methods (cheaper) other than simply checking them as extra baggage at the time of departure? How did some of you guys here that have moved a woman from Europe move all their luggage?
Put down hammer! Tell new wife and new daughter NO! tell to give away things and bring only two suitcase with promise to shopping with transport money. Even laborer in America can dress nice and modern.
Thanks bowhunter for the suggestion, I have shipped a box of clothing to Russian (Velikey Novgorod)before and it was very expensive 50 pounds for about 200 USD. However, it seems the airlines will charge about half that for extra checked luggage. I just need to check into how many bags per person they will accept. I want to tell you good luck with your interview and tell your lady to bring various pictures of you and her together and also pictures of you with her family to the interview. Also it helps for her to know about your job, where you live show proof of phone calls or skype logs and names of your family members. These were all questions that were asked of my fiancee during the interview.
Rasputin, My woman as most Ukrainian and Russian women take pride in their appearance and the clothes they have acculumated, can not be found in America. I understand your direct approach to solving my problem but I want her to look and dress like a Ukraine woman when she and I go out in America... not as a simple American woman that dresses off the racks at Wallmart. I went to Uklraine to find a woman that enjoys dressing up and wearing high heels... otherwise I could have found many American women right here at home. Thanks for your comments and I wish you success in your journey!
danny41,
Yes, I think you are correct... I should just pay excess baggage. I got a price from Delta airlines of 200 USD per bag so it will be 800 USD for the 4 extra bags. Everywhere I checked the price was similar in cost and this is more convenient for us.
Matte,
I tend to agree with you! Both of us think you are stupid. I went to Ukraine to find an intelligent woman that also takes pride in her appearance... Otherwise, why should I go all the way to Ukraine to find a woman? I could find many American women right here that are eager to become my wife. Trouble is the majority dress in sweat pants and flip flops they don't wear makeup or even care enough to color their hair when the gray starts appearing... For some men (you) appearance is nothing and you are only looking for a beautiful mind. For me; I searched for a combination of intelligence AND appearance.
I'm reading that Delta excess baggage fees ex Europe are not USD200 per bag but EUR200 per bag, at today's rate EUR200 equates to circa USD290!
Have you tried shopping around via Google, there are freight shipping (courier) companies that will ship via surface rather than via air, it might take a month or so to arrive but for a fraction of the price.
Put it this way ... I have some shipping to far Asia to do, you wouldn't want to know the price by air ... but by surface it's circa GBP10 per cubic foot.
IVOR... you are correct, as I again look at the small print on Delta’s site it is definitely 200 EUR per bag leaving Europe. I will continue to search for a cheaper alternative, thanks!
I'm just looking at Meest, I can't get their www.meest.net site to speak American, their www.meest.us site does speak American but, online, one can only get quotes USA to Ukraine and not vice versa.
But ... USA to West Ukraine I entered (online) a parcel weight of 44lbs (20kg), the pricing seems competive although somewhat confusing so, if you haven't already done so, it might be worth you calling Meest on their US toll free number.
Mini --- congrats.... I don't know about putting down the hammer. But ask her to filter out the things she does not need. Ask her what is the most important to her regarding the wardrobe. Save money on transporting clothing she will probably not ever use. Save the $$$$. Then use it for them to go shopping in an American clothing store. The cost will even out. In the long run you will find that having new clothes and assimilating to the American styles be will the way to go. No sense bringing clothes that will eventually be given away. She will eventually realize that having her clothes is not as important as being with you. Plus it will be fun for her/them to shop for new clothes. But definitely let her bring the heels - my wife still bitches about no good shoes to buy... Obviously this has to do with local fashion. You will find in a few months that she will be a lot more comfortable wearing casual shoes. Plus her feet won't continue to be distorted from the insistence to wear heels all the time. You don't have to go out and spend a fortune on clothes. But every few months take her out to pick up something new. Eventually she will not want more -- if she is of the ilk who wants to not spend money. The daughter will want to fit in with the Americans she comes to know - and school.? Being different may be a novelty at first. But I think they will not want to stand out from the crowd. ......... Remember those of us who did not want to stand out from the crowd on our trips? Well consider that she may not to stand out as different also. But of course, a chick dressed nicely only stands out in a good way. ;) Try to reason with her about the clothes. If she is so insistent about bring everything she owns.... are you sure she is the one? This is a new life. Celebrate it together. Tell her that.
Thanks for the info on Meest, I see they do offer competitive rates for shipping baggage to their warehouse in America... also there would be an additional expense of transporting the luggage from their warehouse in New Jersey (I could be wrong on its location) to my home in Michigan which could conceivably be more expensive than using the airlines. I think the only way to save is to use their shipping alternative (sea) and that is what I'm currently checking into. My fiancée and daughter could ship all their winter clothes by ground (sea) at a fraction of the cost by air.
