I am going to visit Saint Peterburg in April to meet "my girl" for the first time, could anyone of You recommend a hotel there in the $70 per night bracket?
Your probably better off getting a two room flat for that amount. Thats when I'm doing when I leave in about a month in a half. I seen a previous post from you, were at the same agency. I have two girls there I'm going to finally meet in person for the first time, I can't wait to see them. The agency is even arranging for my third girl to come there from another part of Russia, they took care of everything, even reassuring her parents she will be safe when she comes to St. Pete. The hard part is going to be choosing which one.
SPB is a big city hence has first-world prices. The amount you mention will get you a hotel, but don't expect any fireworks for it. Also don't book a 'single' room for that's exactly what you will get then. It also depends how central you want to be, and around Nevsky Prospect you will pay more. However, this area is probably where you want to be.
No Tim, a lousy fifty will get you rubbish if anything at all. A dump on the outskirts maybe, hardly something to call home for some days, let alone to invite somebody to.
But Nisse, dunno how long you'll go for. Maybe a (good) hotel for some days, and then move to an appartment somewhere convenient? If she's from there she must know how-to - ask her? Oh, and that's cash, CC for hotels only. Let her do the arrangements, and do not pay your whole stay in advance, better is to pay in terms. Minimal trust needed and it keeps you flexible.
But enjoy SPB, and do some tourism homework in advance. There is so much to see that you will have to choose, and bear in mind that English-speaking guides are nowhere present unless you hire your own. Hope your girl(s) can help in this regard. Use the underground, impressive in itself, and easy once you've been given the tiny map (cardsize).
I second everything that Thunder states. Not sure what hotel this Tim H is dreaming about. You will get shit for less than $50 in St> P. I stayed in Hotel Polkovskaya for $70 a night. The rooms were very nice and had two single beds that can become one. The location is seven stops from Nevsky on the underground metro all on one line so it's easy to use after your first try. Cost is less than a dollar a ride. It closes at mindnight so then it's taxi time which will be about $5 to $10 depending on what time of night it is. Apartment is still the best way to go. The girls will feel like a night working girl coming back to the hotel.
mind what Deanis says, his last sentence. I forgot about that, but you will probably be surprised that every floor has a manager, normally female and present 24Hrs. But not only that, you will walk past at least one breaker at the door, and usually nobody not being a guest will get past these persons.
If you bring your friend for the night this will cause problems and her being stopped.
Then cause shit Nisse, first nice but throw a major tantrum if necessary, at least if she truly is your girlfriend. She will get past then, but a commercial girl I suppose is known throughout town. I think it's custom that the staff is fishing for a bribe then. Your prerogative if you fall for that, I never pay them.
I would recommend to get apartments too. the luxury one will cost you 80-120 per night depending on the season. but it will have everything for relaxed staying. if you go to meet ladies from the agency, ask agency to arrange one apartment for you. or ask your lady to do it. there is one company UK owned . http://www.pulford.com/ we rented from them in Moscow and in SPb. high quality flats. contact them and do your bookng.
Good Lord Guys, if even Oleg is now chasing skirt there the situation is becoming desperate I'd say. So let's agree that from now on anything goes, the first the best, basically as long as she's Russian.
My my Oleg, you've got a way to break news. Couldn't you have been a bit more correct like in saying "He Guys, hurry up a bit, there's a hell of a queue forming behind you all!" ?
But that's it then, I'll even join organized tours from now on. Book me on the next, appartment & all. Hell, if the girls are getting scarce there's always Wodka.
Just because the sign says $70 per night doesnt mean you have to pay it !!!
Im a motor trader, we never pay the asking price !!
Every heard of haggling ?
Tell them you want a room for 5 night for example, then state that you want a discoun, if they refuse tell them you have already asked at another hotel and they are prepared to accept $52, if you dont get an offer of $50 then you are doing it wrong !!!
They all want the business, and they are very competative on price !!
Good busniess sense in my view !!
Never paid full price for any hotel in the FSU yet !!!!
Interesting idea I never considered but I'm curious. Did you see several rooms before you negotiated the price? If you didn't then who's to say they simply just didn't put you in their $50 room.
I always look at a hotel room/rooms available before I make a choice mate :o))
Shopping around is in my blood, when its about this sort of thing, but I stand by my comments about WU (sending money thread) There is a time to be frugal and a time to be sensible !!!
Basically the golden rule is that they want your cash more than you need their room !!
After all, renting an apartment is possible for $400 a month !!( and I have paid as little as $300 many times !!)
So why the hell would they think we are dumb enough to pay $70 per night for a shoebox size room !!!
"Have a deal with them" they will respect you much more for it too !!
Rich flash people are not admired there, people who do good business and do not waste money are !!!
You must have heard the expression "A fool and his money are soon parted" ?

While in Odessa - the ONLY unpleasant (ans I mean REALLY unpleasant) experience I had was staying at the Black Sea Hotel. It was arranged by the tour agency and touted as a "Four Star" Hotel. What a dump. I'll say - the lobby was nice as was the cable television (always say something nice first...). But the room - two tiny twin beds permanently afixed to the wall (on conjoining walls). Dirty carpet. "Luxury shower" than consisted of a tiny elevated platform and a handheld shower wand. No heat at all for three days. Then they provided electric space heater for the remaider of October. Electricity just went out several times for an hour or two with no explanation. Could hear every toilet flush on the above floor with disgusting detail. The staff was surly and though they made the beds every day - the sheets were never changed. And for all of this "luxury" we paid $90 dollars a night. With an extra added $30 surcharge if a lady spent the night. (The other choice - try to sneak her in past the guards at every door - and if caught pay an additional $50).
I was not impressed - lets say.
Some of the people on my tour had ben to Ukraine before - they asked for suites and paid an additional $30 (I think) above the amount the rest of us paid. They were on the top floor and, I understand, extremely pleased with their rooms. Live and learn.
If I visit Odessa again (as I hope) I will stay somewhere else.
Olga: Thank you for that website - but unfortunately Moldova isn't covered by it. Mindful of my experience in Odessa - I intend to stay away from any semblence of a "single room", renovated or not. And I am also aware that a westerner should not take things for granted and "assume" that a room has, constant heat, a shower, or even a bathroom. Also the published prices of nearly every hotel in Moldova has a two or three tier pricing system - where citizens of nonformer Soviet states pay twice as much. The old Soviet era hotels are well represented on any Moldova websites - at $100 and up to $200. (Remember this is Moldova - generally a lot less expensive place than say, St. Petersburg or Moscow).
Fortunately - after extensive serching - I have just found a series on newer hotels built in 1999 to 2001. Also and older one that is privately owned. These prices seem much more reasonable - at $25 to $100 per night.
Just curious Tim: You mentioned you are in the motor trade. And you are obviously British. A popular saying amonf westerners in Ukraine when observing that there certain IS some money there (as was evidenced by the fancy cars we saw on the street) was "They've alreay sold their yearly allotment of Bentleys".
You wouldln't happen to be associated with that particular type of car, would you be?
