Well, I just recently returned from 26 days in the Ukraine and I thought I would share some of what I have learned while over there. I’m going to try to talk about things that I haven’t seen listed on this forum. The main purpose of this thread is to help the Newbies out so, some of you veteran’s out there will have some things to add as well as debate. I welcome it all. Forgive me as I will float around with different topics as I recall them. Prior to this trip I did what I call a scouting trip. I paid for a romance tour package with an agency called “A Foreign Affair”. Something I recommend all Newbies to do on their first trip. This gave me access to about a dozen different interpreters/Guides. I could then choose the most skilled of these to add to my network. Also, I was introduced to many other men just like me looking for romance. Again I could add these new friends to my network. Now my second trip to the Ukraine was done at half the cost using my interpreters via email and telephone to make all arrangements for me. Airport transfers and pick up, apartment or hotel rental. Also, I had the combined knowledge of all my tour mates to help steer me to the right path. Even then I was still learning and I think we always learn more each time we go there. Well, here are some of the things I learned. One of the most important things I learned was that there is ATM or Auto bank machines everywhere and your card will work. This eliminated the need to carry large sums of cash all over my body. Also, in the larger cities such as Kiev your credit card will be accepted in most restaurants and shops. I only brought enough cash to pay for my apartment rentals and a little extra just in case. What about the water? Can you drink it? No! Can you brush your teeth with it? Yes! The Taxi’s, they are cheap compared to our income. If you are with your girl or interpreter don’t speak English while they are negotiating the ride. The price will double if they know you are a foreigner. It’s ok to speak once you get inside the car and the price is already set. If you are on your own you can try to haggle as TimH certainly would do. Many times if you do walk away from the first price they will come down but you will spend more than you would if your girl negotiates for you. My apartment rental was $50 a day. This was in the cities for Kiev and Kharkov. Very nice one bedroom with large bed, and living room with sofa bed. Small kitchen with stove and microwave and refrigerator. The microwave is handy for heating up ready to eat chicken or pork from the local markets. Gifts for the ladies? The tour agency always coached us to bring flowers. You can if you want to and I’m sure a girl will like it but as for me I prefer a smaller token for the first date. I usually bring chocolates. Most girls love sweets and she doesn’t have to carry around this big bunch of flowers all over the place. Flowers I usually keep for the second or third date. If your girl doesn’t speak English then expect your dating cost to double or triple. Your interpreter will get $5 to $8 per hour and will be eating and drinking along with you and your date. Most interpreters will not gouge you. They typically order salads only and drink tea but if it’s a long day then expect to feed them too. Take my advice and don’t be a cheap ass. I prefer friendly terms over strictly business with my interpreters. It will pay for itself trust me. You can decide to date only English speaking girls for many reason besides the added cost. Myself I don’t let it stop me because I like to keep my dating pool as large as possible. Be prepared to lie a little bit. The girls you date will want your time exclusively. The agency will tell you the ladies understand that you are here to meet as many women as possible to find that special one. Well, no they don’t understand. They Want to be the only one and they will question you what you did all day or the other night. Prepare the little lies ahead of time. A good interpreter will help you with this. Also, keep in mind all is fair in love and war. Many of these girls have local boyfriends and lovers so don’t be too hard on yourself. Agency girls or the girls on the street or café? I date both. With the street girl you get no surprises. What you see is what you get. But is she serious about dating and marriage to a foreign man? Many times you are the first foreigner she has met and never even thought about that. The agency girl usually has already given that some thought and maybe discussed this with her parents. But the agency girl sometimes will disappoint you in her appearance. The one picture you saw didn’t tell the whole tale. Girls clothing? They dress hot! They dress sexy! These are women who are not afraid to be women and that is why I love them so much! You don’t see unisex clothing on these girls! By the way these people can have anything we have. It’s there in their country for sale just like at home. Don’t try bringing a pair of Levi jeans for them thinking that it will impress them. These girls are ahead of us in fashion so, your better off just taking them shopping because they can get it but they can’t afford it. That being said, don’t be surprised to see your girl in expensive looking clothing and shoes and such. But you will find that you will see her entire wardrobe in less than a week. They dress very nice but don’t have a lot. Also, probably the most important thing I did when I was over there. I bought a mobile phone! If you already have a GSM type phone then all you have to do is buy a simm card and have it activated. I didn’t have a GSM phone so I bought one over there. Text messaging is the single most used means of communication in the Ukraine. It made life so much easier over there for me. I could reach my interpreter or girl anytime. The mobile phone will be worth its weight in Gold! Trust my on this one! Text messaging was nice because it’s also discreet. No more waiting on the street corner by the Lenin statue! So, the bottom line cost of my trip for 26 days was about $4,500. This included airfare, apartment rental, and everything else needed to live there and date girls. Well, that’s about all for now. I hope this thread builds with lots of useful information for all the guys who are about to go there for the first time. It is what makes this forum great! Good lord Deanis, next you're going to tell cars are bad for on'es health? ;-) So now you've been there for the second time. Good, and by the sounds of it you enjoyed it also. But what is more interesting is - now tell us about your results? Surely dating a few rolls over into a few only, or less maybe? Would not mind knowing, as a 'result' is the prime mover of this whole thing. TimH Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 2/25/2004 4:16:49 AM   Water: I wouldn't suggest brushing your teeth either, with water from cities outside Kiev, and bottled water is very cheap. Phone cards: If you have a GSM as Deanis says then you can buy (in most FSU destinations) a card which lasts for one month and all calls are included (all calls meaning in the city and surrounding area that you are in, but you wont need to call much further and for that its the trusty old land line). The last one I bought was $150 and as Deanis says, worth its weight in gold as the girls can contact you, which is a must as often things can go askew and a lady can easily be late for no fault of her own. Clothes: A Russian lady will save for months to buy maybe only 2 blouses, but by God when they buy them they are stunning items of clothing. Clothes there are not cheap by local standards (many coming from countries like Kazakhstan where the better quality items are made) But they are very beautiful and I agree Deanis, Russian ladies are way way ahead of even UK women when it comes to fashion and taking care of themselves, thats another one of the reasons I go there and seek a lady there, as I said in a previous post "I want a princess, not a pig" Haggling: Do love a deal mate :o) I have always used one golden rule when shopping for myself in the FSU. If the price goes up when they realise I'm a foreigner, I Walk away, and don't go back. In many Markets word gets round very fast that there is a non native on the plot, but it goes round equally fast, that if you try to fleece him he wont buy anything from you, so again be careful and be firm about what they want to charge and what you feel is a reasonable price. When shopping with ladies there always be attentive to what she tells you, she knows more than you ever can how it all works, she also knows whats a good price and whats a rip off !! Finally on this point, Markets provide the best choice and best prices for clothes, ask any girl you wish, they will all tell you they do not buy their clothes from shops or boutiques, they will tell you that those places are fro tourists !!! Gifts: As mentioned in other posts, any gift that you have given consideration and though to buying for a Russian lady will have more impact and make her happier than a truck load of stuff that you obviously haven't thought for one second about !! Perfume is a good one too, but only once you know her preferences. EVERYONE brings flowers !!! Try to be original !! Use your brain not your wallet guys. Sweets are usually well received if given occasionally, but be warned, Russian ladies are very aware that sweets could make them fat, and just as conscious of her figure as any woman I have ever known, but most will take it much more to heart than western women would, buy her too many and she will think you are trying to ruin her figure, therefore you don't like/love her the shape she is !! Russian ladies are not shallow and superficial like our scrubbers !! They look at everything very carefully and weigh up all the angles, its in their breeding to be this way, but it has many advantages for you too. Apartments: Good going on the apartment price mate :o)) I'm dead proud of ya !! It seems that some advice I give is paying off already :o) Haggle, Haggle Haggle :o)) Deanis !! My Man !! "Take my advice and don't be a cheap ass" Hit the nail square on the head. Yes I haggle, yes I do deals with hotels, taxi`s, market traders, but I NEVER cheap on a lady !!!! Dating: Don't think for one second that you are going to have serious relations easily with a girl you meet in a cafe, as Deanis says, you could be the first non FSU resident she has ever met, she will be curious, flattered and intrigued, but unless she has signed up with an agency, the last thing on her mind when you introduced yourself was marrying a man from the west !! I'm not saying don't do it, I'm saying, expect it to be a long hard slog if its going to bear any fruit at the end of the journey. If you want women who have already decided what they want, then stick to ones you have written to, or met through agencies. Interpretors: Ive only ever used one, on my first trip to the Ukraine (picked up lots of Russian since then) and she is still a dear friend with me now (it was along time ago too !!) she is now married to a US man, and soon I hope will join him. We are as close as brother and sister, and trust me, her advice and input has been invaluable to me on many occasions !! Dress: I am with you 100% on what you say about these ladies being real women, and yes they do dress very sexy. Be warned however !! They are not prostitutes, and Never were !! I know we are not used to seeing girls dress this way in the west (ours are far more boring !!) but in Russian its not the exception its the rule !! They all wear similar clothing and they will not appreciate being leared at !! So guys, best behaviour at all times, until you are invited to touch, Don't !! A nip of her ass will get you a righteous slap round the face !! Its amazing what you can learn just sitting in a cafe watching the FSU world go by !!! Levi`s: It certainly wont impress them !! Levi`s are not even made in the USA any more !! They come from the east now and are not the quality they used to be !! Badge engineering sucks !! And I'm not even going to begin talking about what Ford have done to Jaguar !!!! Hope these points and comments have helped some. Hey since this is my first trip to FSU I want to ask something. I'm going by myself with the help of the agency me and my girls are dealing with. Do you think it would be wise to go with a tour or would it be safe to wing it by myself? I don't speak Russian but my girls speak some English and they keep reassuring me I will be ok. Same with the agency although they charge a pretty good price for a translator. American girls are such a turnoff. I'm sure there are the exceptions just like everything else. Its when I dated a Korean girl then a Brazilian girl that changed everything for me. Now the thought of dating an American girl is like trying to drink sour milk. I will never touch my Russian girlfriend without being invited by her to do so. I'll be patiently waiting for that moment you can be sure, but I will not push it. Unlike UK women who will wear a shell suit, tie there hair back coz they cannot be bothered to wash it and genrally dont bother with looking good unless they are going out with their women friends to act like animals in some bar or club for the benfit of other men that are not their partners !!!! Bitter ? Me ? Nope, I am a realist and I have seen women here behave in ways men would Never dream of doing !!! Especially by our seasoned veteran TimH. Yeah Thunder my first GSM mobile phone. Sorry but in the USA we have our own little mobile phone world going on and GSM is now just becoming widely available. Well, Thunder as for my results I must sadly report after all that time I have not found the "One". I dated about 15 girls during my stay and all of them are great girls. I do have one girl named Natasha. We are keeping in touch by email and I will make it a point to see her again when I return. We met towards the end of my stay and need more time together. I have big plans for this summer. I will spending my entire summer in the Ukraine. If I don't get the job done after that then I'll become a monk! Now lets talk about the girls because this is what I like best. TimH is right that they do not dress sexy to drive you wild. It will! But its not the reason they do it. That being said I will also say dont be afraid to make the move when you feel the time is right. You wont get a face slap. A friend of mine got his girl back to his place and made the moves. She put a stop to it quickly and told him she was not ready for that. He immediately said he was sorry. Her response was.... "You don't have to apologize for being a man!". You have to love these FSU women!!! You see FSU men are very very aggressive. I have never seen such behaviour anywhere else in the world. Any chance these guys get they jump on it. I sat there near the dance floor of a club and just watched with amazement as the men would just molest the girls on the floor. Grabbing handfuls of ass and breast. I was amazed on how the girls handled it. They just politely grab the mans hands and pull it away from whatever body part he was working on and they would hold his hands so he couldn't continue. Sometimes they would break away from the bastard and leave the floor. Bottom line is they are used to aggressive behavior by their local men and you will be a pleasant surprise to them with your gentleman manners. I was complimented of this many times by the ladies and I was rewarded later. :) You can invite your girl to your place later in the evening and do not fear that you will offend her. You wont. She will say no politely as many of mine did and sometimes they will say yes and it is basically understood what will happen while there. The thing about these women is they do not play games with sex like our typical American swine do. If they want you then you will know it and again feel free to make that move when you feel the time is right. She expects it! After all you are a man......... I appreciate the finer points of Russian/Ukrainian ladies as you do my friend but I DO take exception to your views on British women all being "scrubbers",and for them all having such a terrible dress sense,and wanting to be groped etc on nights out............whilst I have no doubt that is the case with many it most CERTAINLY NOT ALL. I have my own lady here now (from Kharkov) and we are very happy indeed,but it is a very sweeping statement indeed to class every woman from these shores the way you do. For every slobbish,badly dressed,couldn't care less woman there is also the male equivalent don't forget.Jeez this post sounds like a rant from a womans rights group,and I apologise for that......but I hate to see everyone tarred with the same brush.
