I met this girl online. She studies medicine in Ukraine. She is just about to graduate, and has to submit a project. We began talking through facebook and then yahoo for a couple of days. We saw each other on cam for a couple of days. She then told me that she was having a deficit in funding her project. I said that I could help her. I told her that I can send the money through bank transfer, but she insisted that I transfer through Western Union because her bank didn't have an IBAN and Western Union was more convenient . I ultimately gave in. She then told me that as she would be busy on that day, so one of her friends would pick up the money for her. The money that I sent wasn't that big (about €40) an amount - she got about €30. She then said after I transferred the money that she sold her webcam because it was anyway not functioning properly (which I did notice as her picture used to freeze frequently). She used to work at the supermarket whenever she got some work there, and said that she finally was able to make that money. We were also meanwhile talking about her coming over to my place once she completes her graduation. I told her that any date after 22nd would be fine, so she said that 23rd is great. The amount of costs that she said would be incurred in her coming over to my place would be $200 for visa which she quoted to me after she said that she made some inquiries, $70 for passport renewal, and the air costs I checked out for her €220. But when I checked I saw that schengen visa from Ukraine costs only €35, and another thing is that I saw that it takes quite a long time for passport renewal. Her reply is that she has a friend who knows someone there, so it is cheaper and faster. She also said to me that she would take care of visa herself, but has constantly been asking me how much I can help her with, even though I've said that I wouldn't have much money this month.
Is she young and pretty?? If so,,, the smart, young and pretty one got your interest,,, now without a webcam,, any old, ugly woman or man can keep chatting with you..
Once you start sending money,,, they keep needing more!
What country are you from? Can she travel from Ukraine to yours? (She's not necessarily Ukrainian just because she's studying there. She might violate her study visa by leaving)
It's always recomended to not send money to someone you've never met and only rarely to ones you have.
You may wind up waiting for her at the airport & she'll never show or you'll get some last minute emergency excuse why she can't travel.
Everything screams of classic scam.
The best advice you could probably get is you go there and visit her.
'Travel and Visa' has been the most common of scams and for more years back than I care to remember ... Just Google for 'Russia Blacklist' to read so many similar stories to yours.
Initially, the expenses were expected to be about $500. She said that she could raise $100, and ask her friend for $100-$150. She also said that she would take care about the visa and the processing fee for renewal of passport. However, I said that I cannot help with $250, so it would be best to drop the plan till January until we have some money, and the flights are cheaper. Initially it was hard for her to digest, then she came to terms with it the next day. I however noticed some lack of excited in her behavior, though she said that worked at the Supermarket and was tired - so I gave her a pass.
After a few days, I found a cheap flight from her place to mine (about €120), so I said that it is possible that she can come in end of December or early January. I said that since you could raise $100 by 23rd Dec, you should be able to make about $150-$200. She could borrow another $150 from her friend, putting the deficit to about $50-$100, which my friend has agreed to help with ($50 rest I'll find a way to get) She asked me initially whether that date was confirmed, so that it would give her friend time by which she could raise the money. She then said her friend would be able to raise that money by the end of month, so would it be possible for me to send $50 for starting the processing. I told her that ask your friend for maybe $50-$70 (maybe not $150) by Monday next week. If she can't help, maybe you can raise $50-$70 by next week because you are free now. I also told that anyway it's not possible for me to give $50 because my friend is away on a Christmas holiday, and he would be back by 27th or 28th, so I can't help her with the money.
Next, I pose her the question about me booking the flight for her because she should be done with the visa and passport renewal stuff by then to which she reacted that she wanted to book the flight herself, because when she would have to go home next time it would be easier. It made no sense to me I said that booking a ticket is no big deal; everything is online. I also said that it is not possible because my friend works in that airline, and he would help me by getting a discount of $50 on the ticket, so if she wants to book the ticket herself, I cannot help her with the money. She was in a way disappointed.
So what do you guys think? I think she would give a lame excuse that she was denied the visa, or maybe even if I book the flight, she'd miss it on purpose, and give excuse of something else.
thats the interesting thing about all this rish.
its a bit of a lottery, you dont actually know when you play it like this.
but yeah they seem to have a tendency of been good liars or triers of some bizarre nature.
then surprise surprise out of the blue ones actually for real.
toss a coin buddy.
i'm tossing a coin today,, going fishing to,, for that big one,, fish that is.
How many other men do you think she is also asking for a small amount of money?
Multiply your sendings by about 10 and she has a nice monthly income coming in.
You are being scammed and if you can not see it, since you have violated one of the cardinal rules, then you are made for her and you should keep sending money.
You see men like you need the scammers and they need you. It's Nature's Way.
Few days ago (exactly the day after my previous update), she told me in the morning that her internet was gonna be disconnected by the cable company. As I had an appointment to meet someone, I responded in an unconcerned sort of a way and told her that I'll catch her in the evening. I was late that night. Then an hour or so later, she came online and started chatting with me, and asked me whether I could help her $80 with for the internet connection. I told her that I cannot help you with it. I had my own expenses to meet, and I don't understand why you keep asking me for money when I've told you I have none. If you cannot afford the connection then let it go. This is what I do. Besides you can always use the internet at the university." As I was really tired that day, I told her that and said I needed to sleep.
Now the next day, she starts the chat once again. I asked her how she'd been doing. She said no so well. I asked her why what's the matter. She didn't want to discuss. Then she said that I was rude the previous day. I told her that I'm sorry for that, but she should have understood my situation too.
Now the weird situation is :
She knows that ain't gonna get any money out of me - after these two instances, but still she keeps talking with me. This is killing me now. A scammer should have already moved on by now. The other thing is that she comes online everyday, and talks. Is this girl for real now? Is she the sort of girl who just is overdependent on others?
But the following points keep me on my vigil:
1) She wrote defense as defence. People from States write defense and not defence. I can give it a pass given she moved here when she was 12.
2) She says that she knows very little Ukranian - even after 15 years. But the counterpoint is that I've seen many Turkish people in Germany who don't speak German even after living here for 20 years.
3)She asked me to transfer money to Azeez Tunde ( which is a Nigerian name) - I found all people with such names on facebook came from Nigera, and Nigeria to me always smells of scam.
4)She told me that visa processing fee was $200 - which she found out through that guy. But I found that it was 35 Euros.
5) She told me that she would take care of the visa and passport renewal stuff, when she wanted to come on 23rd and when she said that expenses were gonna be $270 ($200+$70), and now she is having a hard time to even get $70.
5) She keeps speaking of money in terms of dollars. Agreed she's American, but even I speak in terms of Euros, even after being in Germany for just 3 months.
@durak
She's not from any of the 'stans. She, that's what she told me, is from the States. She said that she moved to Ukraine when she was 12, because her parents were no more. She came to live with her aunt in Ukraine. She ethnically is from Netherlands - again that is what she told me.
What should I do?
I was convinced that she was a scammer when she asked me for ticket money, and even more when she asked me for internet money, but her persistence even after that is confusing me.
Should I throw into the picture my coming to Ukraine to pick her up/to meet her maybe sometime in January. The problem ofcourse is that I don't think I can because I'm not a German citizen, so I'm authorized to travel only in EU. Otherwise I need to go through the lengthy and expensive process of visa. However, if this girl is really not a scammer, she would be pissed off because I lied.
Any tiny "benefit of doubt" has been utterly extinguished.
Even before I got to the name 'Tunde', I was thinking, "this sounds African." On a website specifically for finding women in Ukraine, I was contacted numerous times by women from Ghana, who would put complete fabrications in their profile (for example, being in a small town in Illinois, though it was a Ukraine website!)
A ethnically 'Dutch' girl from the USA who was orphaned at age 12 and moved to Ukraine to live with her (presumably Dutch) aunt? Enough fertilizer there for a decent vegetable garden.
I'm still intrigued, does the face on the webcam look European?
As to her persistence, it is probably connected with your not saying "no" plainly enough... she can see that you're (at least partly) taken in. It may not cost her much to use the internet. If 0.1% of her solicitations lead to receiving money, that's probably a terrific profit margin.
I suggest that you develop a whole lot more skepticism.
Durak,,, they will also claim to be in the US. And will show Miami, Kansas,,,,, or Denver, Wyoming as their hometown!! I have had many too, who will claim to be an American citizen,,,, but now I am in Ghana,,,, and I want to meet you so much!!!! I only have half of the money needed for my return!!
