I spent several trips and A ton of money on interpreters. Then my son asked me a question I could not answer. He said why don't those women know English? I began explaining about history and obstacles to migration and traditions and how languages are different all over, but then I realized something brilliant about his question (he's 12).
Why DONT they know English? I know a few who speak English level 4. This level is nearly useless. They weren't dating anyone, they just had a desire to marry a forigen man so they began learning. Wait, do I smell yet another test of sincerity here? So I thought if I wanted to move to Japan wouldn't I start learning Japaneese even if I did not know how or when I would be going? You could say maybe they will move to Europe and there are so many languages, but a good basic knowledge of English would serve you more in most of Europe than only knowing Russian. I have met some women who say they will begin lessons when they meet the right man. That sounds like years of waiting. With that in mind I began looking only for women with an English ability of 6 or more. I am visiting the first one I used this requirement on currently. She's turned out to be perfect to my mind after 3 days. A truely feminine and family woman. At this stage I could not be happier. Of course things may just appear perfect after 3 days but I have 2 more weeks here so we will see.
giss, I'm trying to put the puzzle pieces together -- is this "6 or more" lady the same young'un at the Sushi restaurant with "1st grade English"? Anyway, it seems as though you're having some fun. I hope you are getting closer to what you're searching for, but of course that takes some time to find out.
As to the wisdom of 12-year-olds, probably we should pay more attention to their questions.
Ralph (and some other men here, I think) have been successful with women who had almost none of the man's language at first. For me, this would be far out of my comfort zone (the "ton of money on interpreters" being only one of the reasons). As I've written before on this forum, a respectable percentage of the women I've met in the FSU had very good English, including a few who work as English teachers and/or interpreters.
Someone not already studying the language could indicate not being serious, or perhaps being very busy with life (and/or disorganized). On the other side, I met a woman whose English is bizarrely good (better than the English teachers, though she makes no professional use of it), but who doesn't take the idea of a future with a foreign man seriously in the least.
I'm confused by the "6 or more" ... the scales I am familiar with top out at 5 (native-speaker level). Although my pronunciation is very good (mountains of time with audio lessons), after 5 years of fairly regular (but not sufficiently intensive) Russian study, I don't think I've yet reached 2, though I'm better than 1 -- maybe 1.7, if the scale worked that way.
I suggest that anybody thinking about international marriage consider, that whether a person contemplating emigration knows the language or not, if they are not at minimum ready to work very hard for a long time (like Ralph's Mrs.) on gaining the language of their new country after they've relocated, their quality of life will suffer a lot.
YES there are different scales depending on which agency or website the lady's profile is only.
e.g. on Fiance.com the highest is 10- fluent.
8 is good
6 is about average and will need interpreter on fist date at least.
so 6 on that site would be 3 on Anastasia or other well know agencies.
Giss,,, it can work both ways! We want them, to want “us” first,,,, the U.S. second!! I had one girl tell me;,,, Well maybe I should learn German,,, or French too??? I told her,,,, you most likely will go to an English speaking country. Every girl I have written to, who has talked about learning English,,,,, wanted me to pay for it! I told them, if our dates go well,,, I’ll consider it!! Three of those women didn’t show up!!
I think it is also amusing how many women will advertise/boast their English abilities,,, but when it comes time to meet,,,,, suddenly they don’t know enough English and must have an interpreter. Nikolaev is the worst city for this. Years ago, they knew as much if not more English than the girls from other cities. Then,, after all of those English schools started sprouting up all over the place in Nikolaev,,,,,, suddenly the girls don’t speak any English??? Do a search for girls from Nikolaev,,, many will have a “0” for their English rating!!! Who here, doesn’t know a few words of Russian???? With all of the advertising they have in English, and all of the movies, and the BBC,,, who wouldn’t have a 1-3 rating without even attending any classes???
One girl I wrote to, had a “7” and I asked her how many words in English she knew?? Not many! I wrote to her;,,, maybe your E number should be a 2 or 3??? A week or two later, she changed it to a 9??? I hope she didn’t spend too much time wondering why I stopped writing?!!
I have had several interpreters who list a low rating for English in their dating profiles. It’s so their friends can earn a few bucks!!
I have heard from multiple sources, that all high school and college kids learn a foreign language!! Most learn English!! “If you ask for directions on the street,,, most people can help you“?? I wouldn’t want to test that!
Durak,,, my ex-girl in Kiev pretended not to speak any English,,, but she would laugh at my jokes before the interp did??? The next year when we met,,, her English was fine!! On Vk,, they have several English sites! Places where their people can go and learn English,,, and the local lingo or slang??!! My ex is English crazy! Because that’s where the money is!! Not only from a scammers view,,, but for her occupation as well!
The girl I went to see this year, was dragging her heels when it came to learning. I would ask her; how much English have you learned?? If she answered the question,,,, it would always be,,,, none! If they like you and want a future with you, they will be more than eager to learn! If not,,,, walk away!
Ralph had more going for him than he let on to the forum!! He had a sister who went to school in Russia!! So,, it’s not like he didn’t have any advantages.
A guy and a girl can get by for a few hours not understanding the other!!! Lol During one of the few days that I was feeling better during my trip this year,,,, I had the opportunity to play; What’s your’ anatomy??! It made the night kind of interesting!! I also learned, that my ex-wife may not have taught Russian to me very well,,,,,,, OR,,,, that the Ukrainian people aren’t really speaking true Russian??? They all say; they are speaking Russian,,,, but if they have never been to Russia,,,, how would they know??? It could be like Americans speaking English,,,, or worse yet,,, Aussies??
I won’t be testing my Russian again for a year or two! I left this site, and another one,,, and then turned off the last one. I am officially off of the market!! And I couldn’t be happier! It does seem strange not telling someone about every detail of my day,,,, but I’m sick of typing!!! Yeah,,, I’m sick of it now too!!
Goodnight Iren,,,,,, a!
good luck Giss, my wife took English lessons before I met her but she is no where near fluent. She is taking classes twice a week now and sad to say I have not kept up on my Russian. I do expect to start getting serious about my Russian soon since I plan to spend six months a year in Ukraine when I retire.
I met one woman in Kharkov who claimed an English level of 2 (1-10). She talked with the interpreter for about 5 minutes straight back and forth. When the interpreter left to the ladies room the 2 woman explained to me all about the technical aspects of the translators up coming operation they were discussing. That was after a bottle of wine though.
The woman I am with now is no where near fluent, but you could drop her off in any town USA and people would know what she was asking.
