I have a trip planned to go to Ukraine for 15 days in November 2012. This will be my first trip. I have 4 days booked in Odessa and I have left the rest of my itinerary open. I have been communicating with 5 women in their mid 20’s for a month or so on Anastasia Date. I am 44, in good shape and I make good money living in Southern California. I am not just looking to hook up I would like to find a great woman for marriage.
My dilemma is I have read so many bad blogs that I don’t know if it is worth going or should I head somewhere else. I usually travel to Asia but this trip I am really looking to settle down before my stock price drops.
Some of you on here have a lot of experience and the economy has changed a lot in the last few years so I am looking for recent good advice on what would you do if you were me. Thanks for the help and if you are ever in SoCal I will buy you a drink. Cheers!!
I have no simple answer -- if you read enough on this forum, you can find enough stories of how things have gone wrong.
My personal opinion (others will no doubt disagree) is that given the combination of Anastasia Date (a website of very bad repute) and the ages of your correspondents, it is practically certain that at least one of them is a bad apple -- and not unlikely that all 5 of them are. Some of them may not even exist (sorry, there is an industry that milks cash from foreign men).
It is very much in your interest to be as grounded and level-headed as you can, and not confuse what you are looking at with what you wish to see -- easier said, of course, than done.
If I were you (this is what you asked about), I would probably make at least a dozen mistakes -- but what I would HOPE to do, is look for women in the age range of about 30-34, and be open to meeting some who are even a little closer to your age than that, if only for the experience.
The "shiny" ones and the "good" ones tend to be distinct groups without much overlap, ESPECIALLY in Ukraine, and ESPECIALLY in Ukrainian towns like Odessa or Lugansk (and the capital of Kiev, for that matter).
There are diamonds, and pearls. Women of truly impressive intellect, education, integrity and sincerity -- who are also sufficiently beautiful they will make your heart race. And there are dozens of crooks and time-wasters for each gem. Are you willing to be the patient, disciplined prospector?
PS Visas to the much more populous country of RUSSIA are easier to get than ever for US citizens.
What durak wrote is spot on! I’ll just add,, that if you don’t go and see it for yourself,,, you will always wonder about it!!
Listen to your gut or the voice in your head,,, if things don’t seem or sound right,,, most likely it’s not!! You can’t trust what they wrote in a letter,, maybe the girls don’t even know you are writing to them?!
From my own experience,,, I trust my judgment in person,,, but not with the letters.
Odessa seems to have more than it’s share of gold diggers, while the cities of Nikolaev and Lugansk have the scammers, Kiev has the escorts, and Kharkov is known to be expensive.
Expect to spend half of your trip looking for something to do!! Lol Most of the time, the girls will disappoint you!
Socal....lots of luck, you are going to need it...
Just some questions......who decided on traveling to meet girls in November? You know, its going to be very cold. Did you or a girl make decision on your apt? Do girls speak good english?
I disagree with durak..I think girls will meet you but don't have high hopes. These girls will just spend some time with you and maybe a couple will try to have you buy them things... try to make meeting with girls for cup of coffee or snack......not for dinner.
Since you are using anastasia....you can give your ukrainian number in letters, it will go through. Hopefully you have made your own arrangements for lodging with a company through internet, I like ukrainfare, they would be able to get a local number for you (sim card), you just need a quadband unlocked phone( I have used my razr). If you need dates....and have some credits left...get online while in odessa with anastasia and make dates with girls, just tell them you are there and if they want to meet. Tell them you will meet in front of 'Steakhouse'( cow in front)and go from there.
You are not far from Nikoleav...maybe a trip there if you get adventurous. Good luck!!
Let me know if you need more help...I know a guy from socal that lives there now.
don't dealt your trip, you need to start somewhere, and Anastasia will give you a great incite to ukraine dating and its industry very quickly.
i never visited odessa.
after this trip you will have a better idea on your approach to this.
dont take anything personal with the girls you meet, it business,, just learn and enjoy.
take a little note of the interpreters, sometimes if you are lucky you can get some good honest answers from them of what they think about the girls, the business,,, job is a job in ukraine.
i did it very similar to you and i seriously wouldnt change a thing how i went about it with my first trip.
i went for a month, i included a tourist company to get myself around ukraine with everything booked to make it easy for me, traveled half of ukraine.
incidentally after my trip i changed my approach and after a couple more trips i ended my search on the shores of eastern russia.
what a adventure, we all have to start somewhere, so dont feel this isnt worth while, just go in with eyes open and learn.
food for thought, that age you are playing with is about money and are opportunist.
also try to stay away from none english speakers.
Thanks everyone for your advice. To answer some of your questions. I decided to go in November as I was just in Japan and there is only so much vacation I can take in one year. I booked a few nights in a hotel in Odessa and I will rent a car to avoid the taxi scam. I live in Socal so it can't be much worse :). Well Thailand and Taiwan were worse. I am ok with the cold and I might go skiing in the Carpathians. If I want girls in their mid 30's I can pull that action at home. Good advice on giving my number in letters Beemer. I will buy an international text plan and I know the phone rate is expensive but it is ok. You are right about if I don't go I will always wonder but there are times I am thinking of going to the Phillipines or Thailand and calling it a day. You would think, if they are all that educated they would think long term about a good life for themselves and not about a nice dinner or some letter writing scheme.
To follow up I have video chatted with a few of them and I can tell they are real I just do don't that very often as you know it is more than any sane person would want to pay even when you are buying a 1000 credits. :).
since you will probably have so much time on your hands during your trip, Sign up now to the dating websites and you can meet lots of girls while there and it wont cost you a fortune(only 30 bucks for a month)
If you want to see more of Ukraine, take advantage of the rental car and EXPLORE! Lots of things to see and do. GPS is a must for first timers and ex pats alike.
The phone rate on life:) is not expensive nor is their data plans and can be used country-wide. Its actually FAR FAR cheaper to call the USA using it than ANY US carrier at about 25 cents/min and calls to wireless phones(which EVERYONE has)are free. A mobile wireless modem for your computer is 38 bucks with free internet for a month. You will get throttled after 2Gb but its still a good deal. Take Magic Jack with you, its FREE to call USA from a US based account.
I have over a dozen in use among friends in Ukraine and Russia that I registered domestically and took with me to give those I want or need to talk to alot.
Socalmikel,,, If you want to stay at a really nice hotel, choose the London Hotel in Odessa.
http://www.london-hotel.com.ua/eng/
Can you read Cyrillic?? If not,, renting your own car may not help very much. The girls don’t seem to be much help with directions,,, it’s my guess, that they have relied on buses and taxies their whole life, that they don’t pay attention to directions.
Even the taxi drivers aren’t very good finding places. Going from Odessa to Nikolaev, the driver needed to call the hotel for directions, and it was located on the main drag! I had that happen several times,,, when drivers didn’t know hotels in the next city?!
I was in Kherson, chatting with a girl in Nikolaev,,, and I told her that I was staying at the Muscat hotel. She didn’t know of it, because she had never been to Kherson? That’s worse than living in Milwaukee and never being in Chicago!
I can drive from Wisconsin to Key West without a map,,,, with more ease than walking just blocks in Russia or Ukraine! I can’t read Cyrillic,,, so I can’t remember the street signs. Maybe it’s easier for others?
I make my trips in January when I can take more days off from work, and it has always been colder at home (Green Bay) than in Ukraine,,, with perhaps 1 to 2 days per year exception. I lucked out this year,,,,, leaving just days before the killer cold weather they had in Europe and Asia!
Phones are cheap in Ukraine,,, I paid 500Ukr for the 2nd cheapest they had (2009),,,, and pay only 1Ukr per minute with (Life;)! 8Ukr to 1USD!
With my Yahoo Voice, I can call home from the Ukraine for only 02.USD per minute and .17USD to call Ukraine from home.
Don't rent car is scam much worse then taxi scam is called traffic cops highest paid job in Ukraine bribe is 50 Ghrivna only about 6 7 dollars but once they find you are foriegner you will pay this many times a day. Oh yes do not forget more cops at stop higher the bribe
come on, stevc, rental car isnt bad deal if you obey traffic rules. I never got stopped ever when I rented a car. even in my own car now Ive never paid more than 200 UAH to get away from a police check even after doing 140kmph in a 90kmph zone. Only stupid foriegners pay every day.
Hi socalmikel
The place to ski is Bukovel, prices are not bad and the place is really big. If you know some one who speaks Russian you can book a place in Uremche for 25 a night includes 2 meals. you can visit easyukraine for pictures and more information. I am going in Feb with one of the sons who still lives in Sumy. If you have an unlocked quad band phone just buy a local sim card so you can call or SMS with no problems. Most Verizon phones will not work since most of Europe uses GSM technology. At&t phones work and they will unlock your phone for free provided you have had it for 3 months and pay on time, T-mobile is 6 months then the free unlock. You can find a lot of tips and useful information on my site.
If you have a quad band android you can root it and unlock it. Sprint always claimed my old blackberry was unlocked but it wasnt and i could only use voice and sms. I rooted my new motorola android and it works fine here now and i can use mobile web, gps and other mobile apps on life.
If you want web, make sure your phone does 2100 fequency
Rick first 4hrs from Kiev to Vinnitsa was stopped by police for disobeying a sign that was actualy laying in the ditch upside down to boot. bribe was only 50 Was warned by locals be careful toured hole country by auto is just a lot easier leting others take the risk
If you go first class, the train isnt a bad way to get around.
After you have driven a route a few times you learn where the cops are. Its very predictable except in cities where they tend to switch around a bit more often.
Kiev to Odessa they are in the same places 90% of the time.
So the title of this forum is Totally Confused and I get mixed answers on how much to pay off a cop. One person says to rent a car and the next says don't rent a car. Some of you say the girls will show up for the meeting and some of you say the girls won't show up at all. I've got it all starightened out now, not confused anymore ...:)
I did get some really good advice along the way... thank you and I will have to report back on how my trip went. I tried to cancel the airfare this morning as I have been to Asia enough times I know what to expect but I guess Aeroflot is non-refundable thru Expedia. So I will go to Odesssa and if it sucks I will bail to Thailand or the Phillipines. If any of you are in Odessa around 11-4-12. Let me know.. Ciao!
Rick how did car and you make out with potholes in the Ukraine roads. Some of their potholes can easaly swallow a tractor trailer. Once I seen condition of roads in Ukraine always wondered how undercarriage of a car would hold out. 140 kms a hour man that hurts my parts just thinking of the damage of hitting one of those potholes would do. So Rick tell me again about stupid foriegners driving habits
There are lots of places to go fast, in fact you may even find a whole km thats been paved recently, lol
I wouldnt trust a Lanos or any of the other cheap cars for very long outside of town.
I have an A6 with a full size spare but I have only busted a tire twice which also bent the wheel both times.
Seriously though, Kiev to Odessa, Kharkiv or Lviv have good roads. Odessa to Nikolaev and Kherson are improving.
BTW, 140 kph isnt that fast, its only 86 mph and its the speed limit on the Boryspil Highway to Kiev.
And Dunt, that plastic thing your mom gave you that goes "ring ring, hello wanker" doesnt count as a real phone
