just want to thank everyone here on the forum for inspiring me to meet a russian lady i've been friendly with for almost a year.i met this lady from siberia on a asian dating site,we became very good friends and decided to meet in person.we were together for two weeks and got along so well, must say she's most friendly, warm lady i've ever met, very good english, also and very smart and intelligent.she's invited me to visit her home city in siberia for xmas, russian xmas being around the 7th of january?my question is has anyone been into siberia in winter?i gather it can be as cold as -30c ? i'm well travelled around the world but have had no experience of visiting russia.any help would be gladly appreciated thank you.
SB,,,, it could get much colder than -30C!! Last year, during that killer cold spell , a place in the eastern third of Russia hit -56C!!
Back in the late 1990’s a city just over the eastern side of the Ural mountains, lost their electricity during some extreme weather,,,,, it didn’t get electricity back until spring!!
If you travel to Siberia,, you will most likely be taking a train? I’ve heard,,, that the deeper,,, or further away from Moscow you go,,,, the more rundown everything is. You need to prepare for a long cold trip.
I travel to the FSU’s during the winter too,, and I pack a pair of insulated jeans, (thinsulate) a warm sweatshirt to go under a lined leather jacket, a pair or two of thick socks and cap and gloves. These extra items use up about half of my luggage space!
Have you thought about how you will travel to Siberia,,, plane, train, or automobile? Do you have a solution for the language barrier?
Yes sibi get VERY cold and its unlike anything you can imagine. Im not sure even the north pole gets that cold, lol
I have a friend that lives there taking care of her father. there is always the chance you can get trapped for an extended period if really bad weather comes(weeks)before the tracks and airstrips can be cleared and roads possibly longer. remarkably, electricity is pretty reliable as it was meant
to be for the harsh conditions although as mentioned above, it is in general run down. the population has also thinned in some cities as people migrate towards moscow for work. there are a couple fascinating vacant cities up that way you can visit during the summer. the cities simply were vacated after 1991(Kadykchan)after a hellish winter and near Salekhard,(cant remember the name) when the electric and gas were turned off. You will also run into the occasional abandoned aircraft or tank in the woods.
for the cold, get underarmour baselayer or acyl-armor base 3.0 I swear by both. you can climb everest with these. they will set you back 1-150 for top and bottom but you will seem like you have super human immunity to the cold for your girl. I have 3 sets including my military issue set but Ive never felt unbearably cold during winter in FSU countries wearing them with sweats over top. My girl ask why I never wear a coat in winter but the simple fact is I dont have to very often wearing them.
Oymyakon, a Siberian village, has the coldest winter temperatures found outside of Antarctica. The record there is -71.2 C, recorded in the 1920s ... but the AVERAGE low in January is -50! But this place is famous because it is extreme even by Siberian standards. It proudly displays a sign proclaiming it to be the Pole of Cold (as in North or South Poles).
