Ok so a face massage... Sounds innocent enough. Look, my friend just brought me some new exotic oil (the sentence was completed only later... From Sir Lanka) it smells very good. So after about 20 minutes my eyes startburning. Look in the mirror, they are blood red. Some of the oil leaked between my eye lids into my eyes. Burn like crazy now. A quick call to her doctor and doc asks, "What kind of oil" Sandal. Ooh you mean sandalwood oil, straight, uncut, the stuff with thru the roof nitric acid content? THAT sandal wood oil? 45 minutes in the bath with water running into my open eyes I can begin to stand the pain. Lets see the oil. Aah a clear oil in a babyfood jar from Sir Lanka in my eyes. This rocks! Her doctor prescribes 2 eye drops. I call my travel insurance carrier. We will get back to you with names of English speaking clinics (that was 36 hours ago). She takes me to the emergency room, or actually her dad did with her. Its a locals hospital. I've heard horror stories about. A German looking blonde woman yells at me as she slams the opthomological exam room door.... Someones in front of me so i can wait. 5 minutes latter I'm in the exam room.. She has 1980's equipment but not old or broken. She asks my gf for my govt insurance number. I dont have one? More exam.. Water had removed all the acid. Drops have removed all the oil residue. 2 days later my vision will return to normal. 2 more prescriptions .... One for inflammation, one for eye pain. Looking around she whispers "50 ". I heard medical services were thru the roof here, I was expecting to hear $200. Then I realized. I got fast emergency room competent treatment for 50 hyvrina... $6?. Did I mention my gf is an angel? 100 more hyvrina for eye drops. No face massage until she tastes the oil first.
I had to make an emergency visit to a dental hospital in Odessa back in 2009. Their first American!
I was a day or two from dying after having a tooth crack and getting abscessed. My jaw swelled up and it looked like I had half of a hotdog bun under my jaw. That thing that hangs down in the back your mouth was pointed at 4:00 instead of straight down. I couldn’t eat with a spoon or fork, and had to push food in my mouth with my fingers. Room service 2 to 3 times a day! I had awaken several times during the night unable to breathe. I lost 8kg in 8 days!!!!
I could only open my mouth about a half an inch,,,,, and the dentist had to pull the back wisdom tooth by cutting it into several pieces. He spent at least 1.5 hours on it.
Several years before this,, I had an old root canal tooth break in half down the middle. I went to a local oral surgeon to have it pulled. I waited 30 minutes,,, then they put some Benzocaine on it,,, I waited 20 more minutes, then they gave me the Novocain shot,,,,, waited another 20 minutes,,, the dentist came with what looked like a plug wire pliers,,, grabbed one side,,,, pulled it, grabbed the other half,,, pulled it,,,,, 90USD!! I was embarrassed about going to the dentist for something so easy!!
The dentist in Odessa didn’t know what to charge me,,,, as their local citizens had free medical care,,, but I did pay a little for meds. Even though health care is free in Ukraine,,,,,,,, people sometimes give the doctors a tip??? I asked them how much??? Oh,,,, 700Uka?? I took a second to convert,,,, less than 90USD and I smiled,,,,, as best I could! He worked 100 times harder than his American counterpart,,, and most likely only asked for 700UKA because I was an American.
The next time a Ukrainian girl asks for help with medical expenses,,,,,,,,,, THINK TWICE!!!
I actually get all my dental work done in a practice owned by an American on the far west side of Kiev called "american beauty"
Ive saved thousands. I get my teeth cleanings and whitenings as well as 2 crowns done there twice a year.
I will say there are 3 levels of medical service. first is basic care in which a tip is expected. second level is where you pay all involved for the best "Free care" which is still cheaper than america and finally there is private practice with state of the art facilities and western trained doctors that will
give you western level care....for a price. Ironically its similar to the discount prices found in american facilities.
the equipment in state owned facilities is often old but clean place. the equipment is usually 20-30 years old and 2 or 3 generations behind american although
a project i did at childrens hospital #2 in kiev with university of philly childrens hospital gave them all of their old equipment when they redid their own hospital in 2009. it is now the most modern children's hospital in ukraine and we finished it just in time for swine flu outbreak months later.
In Nikolaev a good dentist will charge in average $50 for a tooth filling and from $100 for a crown. A lot of foreighners come here to treat the teeth. My dentist makes a living of patients from Israel and Switserland.
I was told that there are two kinds of facilities in the FSU: private and public. The public is all free and the private will cost money. The public facilities have a long waiting list. Many go to vk.com for help as many cannot afford the care, especially the ones with serious ailments.
One does not have to go all the way to Ukraine. Mexico has good affordable dental care. A friend told me about it. I was concerned with safety, but she assured me it was safe. The place is just off near Yuma, Arizona in Algodones, Mexico, a two hour drive from here. You do not have to drive in. You can park on the US side and walk in. It has much lower population and looks isolated. They have over 600 dentists.
I brought my mother there. What could have cost her nearly $900 with her dentist, cost her only $300. That was about a year ago and she has not complained about the quality of the work. While on line to go back to the US, I met people from Montana. They go there twice a year. Medication that normally cost them an excess of $2,000 cost only $200.
