I've been visiting Odessa a few weeks ago, and I quickly realized I was spending much more money than I should on almost everything you can think of: taxis, restaurants, clubs, translators, girls, etc... I seems like everyone in the city looks at foreigners as if they were stupid guys with their pockets filled with $$$. Language barrier makes it even more difficult to avoid too. The online-dating business is so huge in Ukraine that has invaded all aspects of tourism there. It's amazing to what extent scamming has proliferated there. Taxi drivers often charge 5 times more to foreigners than locals. There are restaurants with menus in English at a much higher price than menus in Russian, others don't even have menus in English. A foreigner will pay $100 to get into a club like Ibiza or Itaka, while a local could pay just $20. Many people would say, ok, that's quite normal in many countries, but I'll tell you, in Ukraine you can easily spend thousands more than you should in just a week, especially if you go there to date a girl.
Anyway, I don't think I said anything you didn't know already, but there is something else that could be helpful for you, as it was for me. The concierge of the hotel I've been gave me a quite interesting business card. There is a young woman in Odessa called Nura who offers a full personal guidance service for foreign visitors. I called her and tried for just one day, and I was so impressed that I kept her with me until I left Odessa. No misunderstand me, there is NO escort or sexual service involved at all, she is just a personal assistant who knows everything about the city and speaks English, Russian, and Arabic perfectly. She saved me thousands of dollars, but the most important thing is that she made my visit a very special one. I moved around like a local and felt safe. I would recommend her services to anyone who plans to visit Odessa. This is her website www.odessa-help.com
i came across a guy in Sevastopol like Nura,, it was his summer job.
well spent money i thought compared to the racket that goes on in Ukraine,, access to good food very knowledgeable of the places history.
his card i do have somewhere,,, name was Eugene..
he wouldnt be hard to find it hes still doing it,,, he picked me up from Simferopol train station and had me sold from that day on.
he was pre-organised by a girl here in NZ organizing Ukrainian Tours, theres only one in nz doing such on google.
had many a good laugh with him.
it was hard not to use him most days he was that good, specially on the Crimean to ww11 stuff for me.
my favorite moment was when he sprinted back to move his car from next to a ww11 bunker system where these guys were digging for war junk beside it,, after he said people go boom here almost once a month at that time.
the guy lived just down the hill and new the sound well.
he could laugh at things quite well himself.
i remember now i had Americans that wanted his services after noticing us.
he used to smile at the dating racket in Ukraine and had digs at me for using it,,, his main point of it was you wouldnt believe how many of these girls actually had husbands or boyfriends.
his services was around 400-450$ a full day including what ever car mileage.
are yes the question when is moneys spent to much..... cost against good services and something one remembers for the rest of their life in retrospect of what it is or was.
some will always rub sticks together instead of buying matches or even the thought of going full out to a butane lighter:)
we charge a close average of $700-1000us for any fishing, hunting, photo, site seeing day here period, that's semi professional for guys like you Rick and sometimes me who want some particular resource, so 400-450 odd which i am only guessing, for i just cannot remember(better saying higher then lower) is not to bad in relative to good professional tours around the world.
actually i wish i could chopper myself into the mountains for that,, and thats not even 20 minutes.
i would have felt shit and a absolute user if i gave him only 65$ a day:) really:)
i got or learnt more about my interest in two days for around 400 then the whole month i was in Ukraine at a then total cost of over 10,000$ just for myself.
is it the attitude if ones a Ukrainian they are expected to give super cheap services? i mean stupidly cheap because you are Ukrainian :))
anyhow this guy who sold himself to us on a pick up of getting us to Sevastopol from Simferopol, i think a basic 40-50 minute trip or something for just a few silly dollars.
he was very good in what he delivered and gave us a 3-4 hour detour (basically he was marketing himself, but why not and he did it well) and re-organized a late arrival with apartment owner.
he was never expected from a country that delivers far less for its buck normally, example its dating industry, taxi's, some hotels on a world stage of things.
between myself and a friend who was traveling with me it was a unanimous decision over a bottle of Jameson's (and Czech beers) that night that we would use his services.
my friend is a very well traveled person who just may have more miles on passports compared to anyone i know, and is very money careful.
we traveled and visited most areas around the black sea (that early morning start should only be for fishing or hunting but ok)
to far as Malta visiting ethnic groups, areas with a Czech coolly in hand, having great food in many places (some weird) with also a very lovely Ukrainian lady in hand.
if that aren't worth 400$ odd wow:) what tight pricks some of us are:))
65$ would hardly cover my petrol bill here or maybe half there, yes tight:)
with my buzz of the Crimean war, ww2 battle sites, cold war Government bunkers to sub crap (that my friend and the Ukrainian had to put up with also) it was seriously worth it.
Ukraine isn't just about city's, girls, walking streets, taxis, buses, night clubs or their crap wine,,, theres a hell of a lot going on there which most of us will never get a grasp of because of been overly tight or just not wanting to know,,, but what ever.
he was one of the very few i thought deserved my money in Ukraine and yes it was on the high end for Ukraine as we thought, but he was very good and a great finish to the months trip which i will never forget.
i even offered my home to him and his family if they ever traveled to NZ free of charge of cause:)
some of the girls i fed with dismal dollars there should have amused me with added food poisoning for my benefit of a added laugh, for they were not worth it.
he was.,
it you have good knowledge Rick of the place you should take it up, yeah it is good money, but on a world stage its still cheap.
question is do you really want to deal with constant foreign tossers? its why i dont do it here in the hunting seen,, to me the money is not worth it, it takes a special person.
i think Odessa wouldnt be worth spending ever over $100 a day for any private tours in my opinion, car or not.
but this thread is about Odessa so i apologize for partly hijacking it:)
A tour of the countryside along with an expert tour guide, to give the significance of each site and it’s role in history, is worth a lot more than a tour of a few museums in some city! Sometimes you do get what you pay for.
I’ve thought about a “road trip” of Ukraine a few times, but I wouldn’t be able to navigate the busy city streets safe enough because of the language barrier. Out in the country it wouldn’t be much of a problem.
The person who should be giving each of us (men) a full tour, is the girl we are meeting! We pay for the communications, ppl/membership,, airfare, taxi, motels,,, maybe even interpreters and restaurants,,, it’s the least the girl can do is to show you around!
Can you imagine if she came to your country,,,,,,,, would she pay for someone to drive you around and give a tour???? We,,,, the men, would automatically take care of it!!
Moya,
I never worried or became upset about the prices on the menu. They were always reasonable,,,, and never cost more than where I live. I was taken to a few places that I thought might be expensive,,,, and after doing the math,,,(dividing by 8) became relieved. I’m happy to experience new dishes.
“You have a girl in Odessa, that does that for free :)))”
