US citizen Edward Snowden reportedly left Sheremetyevo airport yesterday, having been temporary asylum in the form of a one-year visa.
Russian television news showed an image of his visa (affixed, one must presume, to his US passport), of which I found a still-frame online. They misspelled his name: "Edvard Snouden". Presumably this was done by someone in Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (we would want to abbreviate it MFA, but the Russian name of the ministry -- in latin letters -- abbreviates MID).
This is the transliteration in latin letters, of how they spelled his name in Cyrillic ... and surely does NOT match how his name is spelled in his passport.
Now, the serious message is, when you get a visa to Russia it is really important to carefully check the visa to confirm that your name and passport numbers are exact, the dates are correct, etc. -- otherwise, the visa is not valid.
In Snowden's case, his US passport has been cancelled by the US State Department, so the mistake in his visa is perhaps not so important!
Durak,, When the Cyrillic alphabet was first translated/converted into the Greek alphabet, they used the French language as their guide. My ex-wife’s last name starts with the letters “Chou” on her Russian passport,, but on the visa forms it is “Shou” . At some point during the Visa/greencard process, they ask if the woman has any aliases,, or if her name has been spelt different than what appears on her Visa application! I/we put the Russian/French spelling of “Chou” and listed it as a translation variant. We didn’t have any problems.
As for this Snowden guy,,,, they most likely made the mistake on purpose,,, to trip him up in the future?
A friend from Ukraine who became a US citizen had some extra difficulties because some officially translated documents she needed (to show the State Dept.) showed her name in Russian transliteration, others in Ukrainian transliteration.
If I recall correctly, sorting this out added a few steps, and a number of weeks, to her naturalization process.
Durak,, I don’t doubt that people can have serious problems with the different languages and translations.
My ex and I didn’t have any problems, because we either filled out the applications and blanks properly and they accepted our explanations,,,,,,, or, they never checked it?!
