Just spent a wonderful week together with my Russian lady in Montenegro.i stayed with her and her son, everything was great,I got along so well with her son,no problems,it was just perfect.she had only booked a one way ticket to Montenegro.so I could help her with the cost of her flight home.i booked her return flight to Siberia using s7 aircraft from an internet site called cheap flights.com.i travelled home to the uk a few days before her departure date.when she checked in for her flight home, they told her her flight had been cancelled.i paid for this flight with my card, the payment was taken and everything seemed fine.my question is why would they cancel her flight??? Was it because it was paid for in my name? I've contacted the relevant companies and none of them can explain why this happened.now she is in danger of losing her job because of this situation.the Russian company are no way as lenient and understanding as a uk company by all accounts.any help very much appreciated.
The airline probably has determined it would lose money if they went on with the flight.
This was the reason I thought of when my flight was delayed in Zaporozhye for six hours. There was probably nothing wrong with the plane. It was on the runway the whole time without anyone working on it. Many years ago, World Airways flights were delayed for at least this much. All they were doing was waiting for more passengers. In the US it is now illegal to do that. Montenegro, I am not sure.
Here in the U.S., credit or debit card purchases can only be refunded back to the card,,, is that the same all over?? Could she have cashed in the tickets??
Did S7 or (cheap flights) say anything about you getting your money back or a new ticket??
You could try; ( http://www.eufares.com/ )
They have very cheap fares,,,, but steep rescheduling fees!
This situation you describe seems quite unusual, but I don't clearly understand what happened.
Flights can be cancelled for a variety of reasons, including weather and mechanical problems. But the usual practice, is honor the ticket by booking the passenger onto the next available flight to the destination (at no extra cost).
Did she return home yet? If so, by what means?
Perhaps there was a miscommunication. Do you think the flight might have taken place as planned, but she wasn't allowed to board?
It doesn't matter at all, that the flight was paid for in your name. But you booked the ticket, you were asked to identify the traveler(s), with full name, probably passport number, and date of birth. If the information given at booking didn't match her documents, then she wouldn't be allowed to check in. In such a case, it might not be possible to get any refund or credit.
had a similar occurrence in Sevastopol at their main hotel up top end area of the main street.
had an apartment for the week not far from it ..
a girl who was visiting me stuffed up her train ride home, she basically missed it,, and i was leaving that day as well.
i tried to book her a room for a day or two at that hotel but they would not have it on.
they said if you do no stay in the room yourself we cannot except credit card payment.
i was leaving on a train in the hour and had to go find a working money machine "Ukrainian money machines".
got back to apartment for pick up just,,,, the owners were there and heard the story and were happy to let her stay for a day or so.
which was great for i'd rather they had the cash then the poxy hotel who i couldnt understand what they were getting at....
If the flight was cancelled, she should have been put up in a hotel and then rescheduled to another flight. If passage was cancelled , it could be because of visa issues. Transliteration of her passport and what you reported when buying the ticket could also be a problem. Check the conditions of passage with the airline.
Hi durak and guys.she informed me that when she checked in she was told her ticket was not valid, nothing booked for her.she tried talking to an s7 airline rep who didn't want to speak to her because her name was not used to pay for the flight,it was my name used for payment! A Good lesson for next time,go to the travel agent and pay in cash for a ticket! She had to stay a further three days in Montenegro with her son.i had to send her money to book a flight home last Friday with Turkish airlines.she couldn't have cash in the tickets because they refunded me the money to my card without any explanation why it was cancelled!very very strange outcome.today she arrived back to work, they are asking for a letter of proof why she was delayed and could not return to work last Wednesday.she is in danger of losing her position,or given a lower salary in the company.maybe she should not have travelled on a single ticket, expecting me to pay her return ticket, anything could have gone wrong! It's such a pity that this spoiled a fantastic week with a wonderful lady.like tom says there are some lovely, sweet and sincere ladies over in Russia,Ukraine....it's just getting lucky.all your help much appreciated.durak get over to Siberia on your next visit,it's very interesting the further east you go from Moscow.
I think there's a misunderstanding here -- the agent wouldn't talk to her because she didn't pay for the ticket, but that can't be why the booking failed.
I booked travel for a Russian woman, on S7, from the US in 2010. The flights went 100% smoothly.
Because YOU paid for the tickets, the agency and/or airline should be able to explain to you why the booking failed.
I did once have a situation that wasn't quite the same, but a similar outcome -- I bought tickets for a friend on the Aeroflot website (usually I buy through a US-based travel website). After I got the booking number from Aeroflot, I didn't do any further confirmation (big mistake) -- it had never been necessary before. On the morning of the flight, my friend called me from her airport, with the news that she wasn't on the roster for the flight. As it turned out, my credit card company had decided that my Aeroflot purchase was possibly fraudulent, and had declined the charge without either the card company OR Aeroflot notifying me :(
Fortunately, I was able to book a last-moment flight so she could come to join me later that day.

In any case, you should have received an itinerary (probably by email?) from the agency you used to book her flight, with her name listed as traveller, and likewise you can get an online statement from your bank or card company showing that the charge for the booking was made and later refunded. You can send those to her, so she can show them to her employer -- it might help.
This story goes to show it is important to have a booking number AND a confirmation number. I do know some booking sites do have a question asking if you are booking a flight for another person. Lots of fraudulent activity, so if booking for another person, more steps need to be taken.
Hindsight...yes, should have booked the return flight also.
