Pyotr Pavlensky, age 29 made a statement yesterday before his act of protest, that a naked artist who nails his testicles to the ground is a metaphor for apathy which rules in modern-day Russia. According to the BBC, the protest was to coincide with “Police Day.” The BBC quoted Pavlensky as saying: “When the authorities turn the country into one big prison, openly robbing the populace and channeling funds to increase and enrich the police and other security agencies, society accepts arbitrariness and, having forgotten its advantage in numbers, brings the triumph of the police state closer through its inaction.” Pavlensky has staged protests in the past, which included sewing his lips together, and wrapping his nude body with barbed wire, to protest the arrest of the band Pussy Riot. Police wrapped him in a blanket before taking him into custody. He faces 15 days for disorderly conduct. His graphic act was recorded and uploaded online until it was removed by the social media.
