I listened and heard two times on USA national news coverage last night that Obama has placed definite sanctions on the Ukraine and one of them is preventing Ukraines from entering United States of America. Can anyone second what i heard ? Would this mean K-1 Visas would stop ? LR? Durak ?
Important distinction: the visa restrictions are not against the state (Ukraine), or all Ukrainian citizens -- but rather 20 government officials identified by the US as being in the chain of command for the order to use violence on the side of the Ukrainian government.
This should have no effect whatever on the US visa status of ordinary Ukrainian citizens.
The US Dept of State certainly doesn't want to punish the country, but rather to sanction those in the Ukrainian government who bear some responsibility for bringing about the bloody developments of the past few days. I'm sure they hope this will deter further moves in this direction.
Durak Canada embassy is closed. Is US embassy still open. Was watching a video on riots today seen dead bodys by a restaurant I took my wife to when we met in Kiev. Scenery much different now, very sad. I don't understand your K-1 visa, But I would imagine one would have to be very careful, about motives. One would take to secure one right now.
I heard,,, and just reheard, as I have been taping the national news for weeks now,,,, that the U.S. has imposed sanctions,,, but Europe has froze assets and banned travel visas,,, and it didn’t give any distinctions between politicians or citizens. It was on NBC national news tonight.
They also said that while our government has been calling for peace, Moscow has been ordering more drastic efforts. I think that is really bold,,, Russia is ordering another country to kill it’s own people, while hosting the worlds largest international event. What can the US or any other country do while thousands of westerners are in Sochi?
According to NY Times, the European travel bans are also limited to responsible officials. I think the same logic applies: sanction the government villains, not the country as a whole.
Yes, it is bold. I have been fearing what Putin would do when the Olympic Games end on Sunday, but he didn't even wait that long.
I agree on the travel bans,,,, they should be expediting travel visas instead of banning them for Ukrainian citizens.
I too worry about how things will be after the Olympics, because conditions are terrible now. Over 70 killed today alone, when police fired into the crowd,,,, and my ex was in that crowd! She sent me an email that the truce had been broken and people were being shot and beaten,,,, and 20 minutes later the news appeared online. I posted that on the forum just minutes after I received her email,,,, 3:00 or 4:00am here. I didn’t think the truce would last very long,,,,, but Jessss.
I’ve heard un-official reports that Lviv has been taken over by the people,, and protest are breaking out in Odessa.
Not a good time to be in Ukraine. Has anyone seen anything from the dating websites warning them about traveling to Ukraine?? Stupid question huh?!
Lonely, I am going there in 2 weeks unless a civil war breaks out. It will be great, less foreigners, less Turkish specifically, and cheaper accommodation.
I Believe Putin was very angry two days ago when Russia was eliminated in men's hockey fron any medal by Finland in the quarter final's. He had stated that he would consider the Olypics a success if Russia won the gold medal in hockey. I have read some of the official pronouncements and they only mentioned only officials directly involved not private persons.
I also have a lot of history with a woman who is passionate about the independence of Ukraine, and who has been several times to the Maidan since this started. I've been quite worried about her, and hope that her natural diffidence will balance out her ardor for political reform.
She was one of those who stayed on the Maidan in the Orange revolution -- hard to comprehend that that was almost ten years ago.
W-F,,, Russia is controlling much of what is happening in Ukraine,,, and not just the government, but by sending police into Kiev and I saw one report of hooligans or thugs being sent in among the protesters to stir things up. In a way, Russia wants this violence to continue, They also want to find a way,, anyway, to blame it on the west. East good,,, West bad!
I would worry about the mood of the people too,,, many are fighting for their lives, or way of life, it might be upsetting to them if westerners are seen as taking advantage of that?
Durak,, I know how you feel, to sit and worry and not be able to anything about it. I waited for as long as I could take before contacting her again. She accepted both of my invites (fb and Vk) in just seconds.
I had hoped that with her being Russian it might keep her away from the protests. One time I had showed her a photo of a girl that I went over to meet,, she looked at her and said: ahh,,, she is Ukrainian?! She said it in a insulting way.
She loves her work and the people she works with. She loves the city,, and now I know how much she loves her country. If she ever had thoughts of leaving Ukraine,,,, she doesn’t anymore.
