Dog - they say is the best tasting meat. Eating this was prohibited at our house.
Cat - never. Although it is rumored that restaurants fill their "siopao" with it.
Bats - I have never seen bats until my later age. They say it is great for adobo.
Ants - The big red ones found in trees. I remember having it on the dinner table once. I didn't care for it.
Beetles - The black ones. I also remember this one time on the dinner table. I didn't care for that either.
Monkey - This is weird. I like fish heads, like many Filipinos. I think it is the most tasty part of the fish. But, I can't imagine a monkey head at the dinner table.
A British (asshole) guy north on this island took/takes pride in having questionable behaviour dogs, when one of his dogs attacked a child one day he (illegally) shot it dead ... The local villagers heard of this and they came and took his dead dog away for their dinner.
There is a rumour of cannibals on neighboring Bucas Grande island but I have no idea if it's true or not, somehow I doubt it as Bucas Grande thrives on tourism, it is one of only two places in the world where one can swim with stingless jellyfish.
I had kinilaw for dinner last evening, raw fish, cucumber, ginger, white vinegar, coconut milk, calamansi (lime) juice, chilli ... It was lovely
Bats??? One of the most diseased creatures around! I’ve heard of really remote people eating monkey brains,,,,,,, or everyone is remembering the same Indiana Jones movie?
Rb,,, are you talking about that little bit of meat on the fish’s cheek?? Or the whole head?
The whole head. If it is fried, the whole head becomes crunchy, and even the bone can be devoured. If it is not fried, the brains also taste good. Fried small fish are sometimes called, "Filipino French Fries." You eat the whole fish.
I have never had monkey or bats. I just heard it from people. I didn't even know Filipinos ate them until I was an adult. My cousin told me about the monkey and bats. One guy told me one of the bars near a military base tried to serve him monkey once. My brother said he was also there when another cousin bought bats from a street vendor for dinner. I confirmed it with my mother. Yes, some Filipinos eat bats and monkeys.
The Indiana Jones scene was nothing, compared to a video called, "Faces of Death" that my brother borrowed a long time ago, way before the Indiana Jones movie came out. In the Middle East somewhere, they have live monkeys on the table. There is a hole on the table, so only the monkey head is on top. They beat the monkey's head and open its skull and eat the brains while the monkey is still alive. That way, they also devour the monkey's soul, or something along that line. My guess is the Indiana Jones people got the monkey idea from the Faces of Death video.
Martin had raw fish? They serve raw fish here, in the states at Chinese and Japanese restaurants. Salmon is the best, but tuna is also good. What is interesting with Filipinos is the "jumping salad". It is raw shrimp. They are still alive, thus the name. I used to like raw shrimp. I even had jumping salad a couple of times. But, I developed an allergy. It blocked my sinuses. My mother said quit eating or it will block my breathing.
Except for the fish, I have not seen any of what I mentioned so far on the stores or restaurants. I doubt if it will ever come to that. What I have seen are the balut. That is a partially hatched duck egg, boiled. It is good, but it becomes gross when the duck is more than halfway hatched. The feathers then take form. Close your eyes when you eat this.
"kinilaw" Martin? That's Ilocano, not Tagalog. They speak Ilocano there?
Bats have been a regular part of the diet in west Africa for many years. Scientists have established that the liver in bats is the major cause of Ebola.
I have not heard of ebola in the Philippines. I did research it. Not conclusive. They took a sample of 169 bats from 13 species in West Africa and found nothing.
This is like a Global Warming article. The title includes the uncertainty, "may have been." http://goo.gl/FXJGrA
Agree with you there. I am afraid we are going to see a lot more of these types of violent incidents by muslims in europe. Airport waiting room areas and train station waiting areas are easy targets for these muslim monsters.
The Boeing 777 along with other Boeing models, can in fact be flown remotely through the use of independent embedded software and satellite communication. Once this advanced system is engaged, it can disallow any pilot or potential hijacker from controlling a plane, as the rooted setup uses digital signals that communicate with air traffic control, satellite links, as well as other government entities for the remainder of a flight’s journey.
This technology is known as the Boeing Honeywell ‘Uninterruptible’ Autopilot System.
