However, when I looked at other shipping companies,
I see other restrictions. One says all types of
jewelry are forbidden, one says costume jewelry
is okay (is their definition based on price or
metal/mineral content?)
The info I've read states that a 30% tariff is
charged for items over $100. Obviously my gift
is, but how do they decide? A receipt from me?
Perhaps, but I don't want my lady to see how
much I paid.
In the past, I've managed to avoid the customs
crapola by having my items hand-carried by
people I know who are headed there, and mailed
from within the country.
Unfortunately, I don't have that option until
(maybe) September at the earliest.
Any info clearing this up would be appreciated,
and hopefully helpful to others here.
I have sent lots and lots of gifts to the FSU, and never ever had anything required to be paid at the other end, maybe Im lucky, and some of the things I have sent have been reasonably valuable, but as I have said also, only one package ever went missing and all that contained were some Cadbury`s Cream Eggs, a card and some photos, and this parcel wasnt sent to one of my ladies, it was to my adopted Ukraine Sister Olya :o))
I guess I will need to take her some cream eggs when I go to visit her before she flies east to the uSA later this year to join her US husband Steve :o))
It has nothing to do with being lucky. Not so sure about Russia, but here in Ukraine, you can send basically ANYTHING if you keep the value declared under $100.
If you send anything through FedEx, be ready that the lady will be requested to pay 70% of a customs fee, whether she wants it or not. She doesn't - it will "belong to the state", I guess there are plenty of people working of the customs, who will make sure that the thing gets into good hands.
yes, never put insurance, or value on declaration form more than 100$. but custom people are not stupid , they know value of things , and if they opened the package they may require you to pay custom fees.
Personally I have never had any gift I have sent had a customs charged levied upon it, but that doesnt mean it doesnt happen, or wont happen to my lady in the future.
If you are sending several items that total over $100 the send 2 parcels ! OK so its gonna cost you the extra postage, but you can afford it, your lady cannot afford to pay $70 to get a gift from you that is only worth $110 !!!
What a timely thread this is!..... I'm putting a little package together this very moment, to send off to some small town by Moscow. It is just a portable CD player and carry pouch, brand new in the box, and I've been debating with myself whether or not to take them out of their factory packaging............ The trouble is.. I cant seem to get this picture out of my head, of some goofy Russian postal worker delivering the rest of his days mail, wearing my CD player with the headphones on his head.
I sent a package 2 weeks ago by `royalmail international signed for'. It has not arrived as yet. but i dont think that is a suprise.
I had to put a label on it stateing the contents and value- which is a little doddgy i thought as everyone can read what is inside.
I shall post if and when it arrives..
I just hope there is not any cost to my lady when it arrives..
any advice on what not to send - as customs are a pain in the ar**
SG
14 to 20 days is normal to the FSU and Ukraine mate, dont panic just yet :o))
The last package I sent to Natash` took 3 weeks and a day !!!
Nothing of any great saleable value, things like teddy bears and little bits of cosmetics, books, photos and maybe a book about your city/town/state.
But whatever you do, DO NOT send anything Gold,it wont arrive unless its sent FedEx, and then its still iffy, and do not send anything that you cannot afford to get lost !!
A friend has been mailing packages to Moscow from Alaska regular US Post with no hitches so far, at least one had a contents label attatched stating contents and value.
I am trying to put together a package to send now to my girl in Kiev. From what she told me she recommended DHL as they can deliver to the Ukraine in around 3 days and don't have the issues of other delivery carriers. I am not sure what they do about customs and declarations though.
Today the package arrives :)
And my lady is happy.
Question 4 tim thou - when you have sent packages from UK have you declared the contents with a label for customs like i did? I wish to send another soon, nothing valuable but it limits the contents if i have to write everything down as the customs label is quite small.
