As I mentioned earlier, I'm on business in Ukraine and met a girl in person, at a cafe. In the U.S., when we propose, we give the girl an engagement ring, usually with a diamond. I hear that's not the case around here, and they don't give rings when popping the question. Is that true? I hear the only ring they give is the wedding ring, at the actual wedding. For me to start this whole K-1 visa process, I'd like her to become my fiance (and I know she'd like that too) and wear some kind of token of our bond. In Russia/Ukraine there is also a tradition to give a girl an engagement ring, but it may be not necessarily with a diamond. However not all Russian/Ukrainian men follow this tradition and it is almost forgotten. Though every lady is waiting for this special token of attention and love…I assure you that if you give your lady a ring when proposing she will be the happiest woman in the world! She will really appreciate it. Its not unusual for a couple to decide one week and marry the next after maybe a year or two of going out and often much less. I know a few Russian couples who met and married within a month !! And one couple who have been married for 17 years who married one week after meeting !! (remember, this is ukraine) plus i'm not rich.... so it should be with a diamond? i want this to be done the american way, the western way. as an alternative to the ring, i know she always dreamed of a certain gold watch, i even know the one she wants. It would be nicer to take her and buy her a ring together, far more symbolic for you to choose it together !! If you take one with you she will Know its not Russian, and that will really get her thinking "Did he come just to find a bride ?" "If I had said no would he have used this ring for the next girl ?" Bring her a nice stuffed Bear as a gift and pop the question WITHOUT a ring...if she accepts you, she will treat the bear as a proxy version of you when you're apart.
