I am planning a trip to Tomsk Siberia on the 18th of this month to meet a special lady and am wondering if anyone on the forum has been there previous. I just talked to my friends in Tomsk about your questions. I do not think they have a car rental there .at least people in Tomsk never heard about it. Public transportation is great you will be able to get anywhere from anywhere on a bus or taxi without any delay. If you like to have a car, I would suggest you get a car with driver, as there is no good road signs, and traffic is not very friendly. But ask your lady to find this service the newspaper ads. as for the hotel, there is one in in the center of the city "SIBIR" it has very good LUX rooms. ask your lady to make reservation. Hotel "Tomsk" was renovated, but it is near the tarn station, not in the center. It will be still cold, dirty, muddy in Tomsk this month. It takes more 15 hours to get to Omsk from Moscow by train. And thankfully it only take about 5 hours by plane from Moscow !! Some friends of mine (they are Russians) told me once that when travelling by train they hide their bags under the pillow if the trip takes hours. They wear so called money belts-purses. So if you have to go somewher by train (in Russia I mean) my advice is to have someone beside you who has some experience of that kind. Have a good trip, Tim! It is known that they can and will drug people in order to rob them !!! All the Russians I know who use the trains take their own food and drink with them from home !! Rina Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 4/14/2004 5:04:06 AM   Tim , of course , we take food from home ;))) But not because we afraid , that conductor will have drugs, and he want to poison us ;))) All is simpler - at train all cost in 3-4 times dearer, then if you will buy it in a shop ;)) He rob you absolutely legal ;))))) and if bottle of water cost, for example , 6 rubles, that in hot summer day at train you will can buy it only at 50 rubles ;)) But - you mustn’t eat, if people , which go at one compartment with you, will give you food or something to drink. Of course, usually it is only because they are good people. But you don’t need at risk. TimH Member send PM   block PM add to buddies Send: 4/14/2004 12:07:45 PM   LOL I like your reference to "legal robbery" Rina, very funny :o)))) I was simply telling the other guys here what I had been told by Russian, Uzbek, and Ukraine friends of mine honey, they all told me the same stories of people being drugged and robbed by other people on trains, and even suspecting the train staff of this practice too !! Oddly enough, whenever I travel by train the the UK I will Not buy food or drink on a train out of principle !!
