Am researching visiting Cheboksary, i understand that there is an airport there but can find no connecting flights, kazan is the nearest i can get by air i think. what about rail? anyone have any links 4 rail travel or coach. Also am not one for hotels and perfer to rent an apartment or studio or similar but can find nothing. Even hotel`s i am finding difficulty in locating with search engine and translation software. maybe i should just take my tent and backpack lol...
yes there is an airport, and they have flights to Moscow. forget name, but it's #2.Some major carriers have recentley switched from #1 due to lousy service.Airport managed by idiot "we are planning to fix it up".
Beats paying $100 to have someone drive you between 1 and 2,though last time I checked, flights to 2 cost more.
Just fell out of lust with lady there.well edjucated, good job,but can't think for herself.
To be permitted to rent an apartment you will need a "Private Invitation" when obtaining your visa, otherwise you will need visa support from a legitimate hotel in your destination city. But once you follow the non private visa route, you will be breaking the law if when you arrive you stay in an apartment and not in the hotel you were supported by. So if you want to rent an apartment then get your girl to go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in her city, pay $50 get the correct invitation document (for which she will need either a scanned jpg that she can print off, of your passport photo page) and then "secure mail" it to you. With that invitation doc` and your fee + the filled in application form (available on-line from the Embassy website) + your passport and appropriate fee (depends on how fast you want it issued, same day for Russian Embassy is 120 pounds UK payable in No other form that Cash !!) you will be able to get your visa with no problem at all.

SG:
DON'T DON'T and Thrice DON'T !! even contemplate using Trains in Russia or any FSU country, unless you really are fed up with living !!!
Trains there are Very dangerous places to be, even for locals !! Foreigners even more so !!
Fly or take private cars, Do NOT use trains at all, and only use Buses unless you are accompanied by a trusted local.
Go to any country is afraid, of course. It is normal feeling.
Simply you must be care and attention. And will be very good, if you don’t talk Russian , that your girl will meet you at Moscow , at Airport. If possible , of course. And be care with taxi - it is dangers . even for Russian. Moscow is big city, with big money ,and bad people know about it ;)
And will be very great, if you will have any friend at Russia. Or simply human , which you know. That if something happened, you will can call.
I don’t sure , will I be here this time, when you will come at Russia, but if you want - write me, and at private letter I’ll give you my phone number. If not me , somebody will help you.
If you will stay without money and passport . To pity , it can be too .
I simply imagine , how it - be at foreign country at such situation… cool…
But , hope, that all will be good.
Wise words indeed, listen to this lady too SG, she knows of what she speaks !!
To the unwary Russia can be a very dangerous place, and the bigger the city the bigger the danger.
Never get into a cab alone, Never get on a bus alone either, and stay as far away from trains as you can.
Dont go out at night alone in big cities, and stay in well lit areas and places with which you are familiar and can find your way back to your hotel/flat from.
oh sh*t, i get the picture...lucky since posting i have found an agency that will arrange flight transfer from moscow to cheboksary and taxi to appartment at i think a reasonable rate, so all is good.. been hard job finding all the info though. many thanks for all the advice. I think it best to have all these things arranged by agency the first visit by sounds of it..
Certainly mate, so long as the agency is a legit one of course !!
If your lady is with a good agency they will help you and her arrange everything, invitation, flat, transfers from airport to flat and back again at the end of your stay etc.
My lady`s agency have been very very helpful and have saved me many hours of phone calls, emails and worry !!
Leaving me to concentrate on worrying about our meeting :o))
But Im not worried any more, just excited that it will hapen in just over 4 days, 97 hours to be precise, so long as the flight arrives on time that is :o)
But often they are a little late, this is Very usual in the FSU, so dont expect to get anywhere early :o))
I agree SG, having the agency arrange everything for a first timer is probably a good idea. Thats what I'm doing. Although I am making sure my girl is involved also. Any questions I have I am making sure to ask her and the agency. So far everything is good.
Rina, are you in Moscow? What about St. Petersburg, thats where I am going. Is it as unsafe as Moscow can be?
St P can be worse in places Crash, just take your lady and her agency`s advice and you should be fine mate :o)))
Dont do anything you wouldnt do in LA or NY for example :o))
Such as, walking down dark streets alone at night, getting into a strange car, or talking to strange men :o))
"I grew up to be the sort of man my mother warned me not to talk to !!!" :o))))
Not all is so afraid, as you write ;))
Bus isn’t dangers, and if you must go or at bus , or at Taxi , better bus. Nothing will happened with you. And big economy ;)) from airport - on taxi will cost 30$ ( for you - don’t sure.. it is for Russian ;) because if you don’t talk Russian , they will try to take too more ;))) .
On bus it will cost 30cents ;))
At metro nothing bad will be, if you will look on your pockets ;)))
Walking at night city, of course, not so calm.
Little advice - for any city ;))) if you go with your girl anywhere, like museum , let she will talk with cashier. And you don’t talk. ;))) because if you will talk at foreign language, tickets will cost too dearer ;)))
Rina,
Wise words indeed, I will say further, when out with your lady anywhere guys, keep your mouth shut at any time money is being spent !!
As soon as the locals hear your voice you are going to pay through the nose for whatever you want to buy !!!
When this has happened to me in the past, on bazzar, or in shops too, I will walk away rather than be ripped off, on bazzar word travels quickly that there is a foreigner on the patch, and many will try it on when you ask prices, but if you walk away the first few times this is tried on you, then soon the prices begin to get sensible again because the word travels just as quickly that this foreigner may have money but he is no fool !!!
Tom - have not decided as although i like this lady lots and have now spent a few hours on the phone with her, through translation she has a little problem understanding my wonderful sense of humour and i think i have just upset her again.. oopps
Still it isn`t the first time translation has been a problem with her and i have got over this in the past.
I will keep you posted - if your going that way too..
perhaps we can get the train together lol.
realisticly i am thinking jul-aug at earliest.
Are long distance trains also dangerous to travel in Russia?
If they are, there goes my childhood dream to ride the transiberian railroad......bummer!
Tim,
Your bazzar price gauging description sounds just like the ones in Peru and Bolivia....you must also watch out for pickpockets at all times in those places.
