Okay - I am not faultless in the soon-to-be described situation. I have planned this trip for a couple of months and should have secured a Moldovan Visa before this. But I didn't. Let me tell you about it.
A Moldovan Visa application asks for the name of the hotel you will be staying in. My girl wanted a nice hotel. My wallet wanted aa reasonably priced one (we will only stay for a few days anyway and then find an apartment) so the WHERE regarding our staying dragged on and on. I was also aware that as of December 13, 2003 - an American could get a visa at the airport in Kishinev so I wasn't worried.
As two weeks until my departure approached - I discovered that it is advised that Americans NOT depend on getting a visa at the airport - but that they should get one ahead of time (paerwork problems). Well I knew that I could stilldo a rush order and have my Moldovan Visa firmly in hand when I took off.
I found an agency in Washington DC which I had worked with before. I used an overnight delivery service to get my passport there, I paid their $40 fee, I gave them money to overnight it back to me and I paid 150% of the visa fee to the embasy (as they require) for 24 hour service.
Of the fourteen days I had available, in one day my passport arrived in Washington DC (I received an email) and I was notified that my passport would be rushed to the embasy.
It is now day 10 - I leave in just four days - and I am only finally assured today (despite continued attemps to email and finally call) that my Visa is ready and will be shipped today.
What should have been two overnights and a 24 hour period - has already stretched into 10 days and will be at least eleven byt the time its over. Not much of a margin of comfort.
Boy, I'd be punching holes through walls just to calm my nerves if I were you. Good luck with the visa Jet, I hope it works out with time to spare.
On a good note, Toronto has just scored and are now up 2 - 0 against those bastard Ottawa Senators. It's game 7, first period and the home team gets the lead for any of you how don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
I am planning to visit Moldova in July. My girl told me that it was accepted practice and very easy to obtain a visa at the airport in Chhisinau. She has friends that married U.S. men who did this. I checked the Moldovan U.S. Embassy web site and it to said that the visa could be obtained at the airport.
Who told you, and what why were you told about the ndependability of obtaining a visa at the airport?
Hey,Tony, I'm rooting for Toronto too, now that the Bruins have broken my heart again and have lost to those bastard Habs! nd by this posting it's Maole Leafs 3-0 and moving on.
Olegnay: The company is TDS (Travel Document Systems) and here is waht they claim caused the delay. Even though they emailed me that they had received the package from the overnight delivery service on Wednesday, April 14 - and I paid an additional 50% of the Visa charge for rush service, they decided to deliver it to the Moldovan Embassy on Thursday, April 15th. The Embassy is closed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday - so 24 hour processing should have had my Visa ready on Monday, but it wasn't. Instead TDS says the visa was finished on Tuesday. So on Tuedsay they sent it out via FEDEX for delivery to me by 10:30 (am) this morning. It is now 1:00 (pm) in the afternoon and I have waited since 8:30 am for the package (wasted a day - because if I miss the delivery I have to track the package down to get it) and there is no delivery yet. I am still hopeful.
Might sound silly of me - but personally I think that if someone goes through the expense of an overnight service and pays extra for "rush service" for the visa - the perhaps it could have been taken to the embasy THE DAY IT WAS DELIVERED by the overnight service. That would have been Wednesday April 14th - then perhaps the visa would have been ready by Thursday April 15th - it could have been shipped back to me via the overnight service again - and i would have recieved it on Friday April 16th. After all the basic visa costs $55 and I paid $157 altogether for the overnight service the document service and the rush fee. Instead here I sit on Wednesday April 21 ana I still don't have my visa.
Also had problems with getting visa, for Russia. The embassy in Stockholm (Sweden) don't process applications by mail so my only alternative was to either drive there, twice, a 450km round trip, or to find a travel agent to do it for me. I found one to help me, should take 7 working days according to the embassy but the russian embassy screwed up and I have not recieved it yet, good news is that both my passport and visa are waiting for me at the airport tomorrow morning (I've checked) so I'm off anyway, but not with a very big margin......so Russia here I come:-)
Nisse - best of luck and safe trip. You've got me beat by 3 days, which is when I take off.
Three from out group on out personal searches at the same time - (you, me and brother Tim). May we all find what we are looking for. (And may we all have a few stories to share in this forum on our safe return.)
Good news - while writing this my Visa came.
In three days - Moldova , here I come...
