My question is about this city. I have asked about Moldova before but it looks like my attention has turned to a loverly in Gorlovka. Has anyone been and if so, do you have any advive on anything about it. I believe I have to go by train from Kiev but am just starting. I have emailed a few places and looked it up on the internet but infor is not flowing so fast. I am sue I will sort it eventually but any compasses would be appreciated.
I have said this many times before, and Im sure many will have read the posts, but have you understood ?
Trains in the FSU are VERY dangerous places for most people who use them, even the locals !!
DONT DO IT !!
Get a taxi, or get a local flight to the nearest city to hers if they dont have an airport in Gorlovka, then a cab from there, or better still have her meet you at the airport in a cab and take you back to her city.
I really do not want to hear that anyone from here has been hurt or killed on a train in the FSU , certainly not after I have put so much effort into talking people out of this very stupid idea !!!
The ability to say "I told you so" is not an opportunity which apeals to me !!
We intend to use a train. ;)
I'm a very alert person and able to 'take care' of difficult situations should they arise other than perhaps a gun. Is it really THAT different from using public transport in any country? London underground seems dodgy to me, but you just get on with it.
"Is it really THAT different from using public transport in any country?"
YES !!!
Oleg is absolutely right, unless you have a Very savvy local with you, DONT USE THE TRAINS !!
Im not asying this for my own good health, Im saying it for yours !!!
Nisse, I agree mate, the LU is 100% safer than the FSU above ground rail system !!
And in the FSU its not just the muggers, rapists, and killers you have to fear, its the condition and safety of the trains and the track they run on too !!!
idiotdetector Gorlovka is not very far from Donetsk. And I'm sure you can take a flight to Donetsk or Lugansk, and then take a bus there. To take a taxi is a good idea, if you're not afraid of extra expenses:))) Actually Gorlovka is closer to Donetsk. Gorlovka is a small city, which is famous for it's Institute of Foreign Languages.
ID:
I can only endorse whats been said, although I have used trains throughout Ukraine with no bother at all,but as has been mentioned I have had my lady to point out the do's and don'ts!!
From experience I've found that reserving a compartment is perhaps the safest way......and usually very comfy too.
If as Ptichka says it is close to Donetsk, then there is definately a flight from Kiev to Donetsk, because I have used it myself, and then I had a taxi the 2 hours to Lugansk from there, this would be your By far best option ID, certainly far safer and more sensible than trains !!
The reason i didnt take a flight from Kiev to Lugansk is that at the times the UK flights land in Kiev it is not possible to get connecting flights to Lugansk until the following evening, as the Lugansk flights leave just before the UK flight arrives, therefore I had to take the next flight to Donetsk instead and then taxi to Lugansk. When I flew to Kiev from lugansk for a few days there was no problem as there was no need to tie things up with Uk flight arrivals, so we flew Lugansk to Kiev and back with a stop over on the way at another city.
Always thought that the UK flight arrivals at Borispol were arranged by the Ukranian authorities to prise a little more cash from the unsuspecting tourists into spending more time at the airport, with it remarkable value for money............OOPS got my tongue firmly stuck in my cheek now!!!
If you want to go to Lugansk from the UK without going via Donetsk you have a 24 hour wait in Kiev for the next direct flight. Which when you are in a rush to meet your lady, is not very wonderful !!!
strange that everyone says the train is bad. I have spoken to 2 gir;s and they us the train to go to st petes and said it was very good as I did question them about it. Aso, I have a friend who has been to russia and ukraine possible more than and he said do not be scared of the train system use it.
Tim.
have you had personal bad experiences or something you read or heard.
My girl has offered to meet me in Kiev and travel by train together. Now she is a tinny woman and seemed to have no fear of train travel. But thankyou for you geographical advice as to closere I can land to this city the better, although 24 hours in Kiev waitinf for a flightis not a nice thought
I haven't set foot on any train in the FSU for several reasons ID.
I have seen the state and condition of the trains and the tracks !!
I have seen many Russian news paper reports of people being, mugged, beaten or killed on trains, and Every friend of mine in the FSU has advised me to avoid trains completely.
Last but not least, one of my customers does "International security" for businessmen, and he goes to the FSU a lot, he actually told me not to use Any internal aircraft either, as they are not safety regulated as ours are, but he was absolutely adamant about the Trains, "Stay the f*ck away from even walking on the stations !!" he said !! "As a foreigner you will be lucky to even get on the train in one piece let alone be safe on the actual train !!"
These trains are Not a good place to be if you are not an FSU citizen, and even then they can be dodgy !!
If she meets you at Kiev then travelling with her on a train would be 100% safer than travelling on your own, get a private compartment which is only accessable from the outside of the train and you should have a better chance of safety, but do not get one that can be accessed from the train while it is moving. Accept no food or drink from Anyone on the train, thats a very regular trick, they drug the food/drink, wait until you pass out, empty your pockets and are gone before you wake up again hours later in a strange place not speaking the language !!
One friend in the FSU was even terrified about his sister using Moscow airport, as he said "It is a very dangerous place" !!! And they are FSU locals !!
Guess it says a lot about me Tim...having finally found a woman who is as crazy as I am!!
and who was very surprised to read a post addressed to her.......but I did tell her you were a gentleman and would respond in due course.....:))
